I have designed,sculpted, and costumed figures for nearly thirtyyears. Costuming has to reflect the period, theunderpinning restrictions, and the stance of thefigure. The choice of color, texture and movement was very important to express the romance and drama of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy. “I’ve been designing 1:12-scale dolls for about 37 years. For starters, historical photographs, fashion plates, Medieval and European folk costumes, and children’s illustrated books provide inspiration. I spend hours paging through books and costume patterns and occasionally just sitting, thinking, and sleeping on ideas. Sometimes historical accuracy is all- important and other times color and mood take precedence. Most of my costumes are combinations of various styles and time periods. Whatever gets me closest to the vision I have for the doll is what matters.” American Miniaturist 57
