It was the discovery of a German army “hundpauker” (dog drummer) in 1930s Hausser-Elastolin catalogs which set me off in conducting research from a variety of sources for this latest project. DOG DRUMMER Inspiration for my band comes from the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. Its crescent was carved from wood. The big bell was made from wood turned on a lathe. Cotton was used to replicate a pair of horsetail plumes. • Glockenspiel: The glockenspiel, or lyre, and its small keys were made from wood. Hanging plumes made from cotton completed the percussion instrument. • Serpent: I wanted to include an eye- catching serpent in the band. I bent the main backbone from thin welding rod, then put it in resin to mold the shape just before it set firmly. As with all these figures, the serpent player’s arms were positioned by altering their angles at the shoulders and cutting into the elbows where necessary. • Cymbals: Circles of tin were beaten into dishes to create cymbals, then they were attached to a Prussian’s hands. • Bassoons: Two types of bassoons were made from wood in accordance with drawings I have. One was normal and the other was a much older design. I find old instruments to be fascinating. • Bombardon: The bombardon, a tuba- like brass instrument, was probably the least successful of the models. I rolled some resin into a taper, then curved it around the figure. A piece of wire was used to represent the mouthpiece. • Clarinet: The clarinet was carved from wood. A punch was used to cut out small plastic disks. Thin wire was used for the rods.28 TOY SOLDIER & MODEL FIGURE

Centenary Dinner hosted by Britains at The Guards Museum, Birdcage Walk, near Buckingham Palace in London. The 100 guests were asked to refrain from taking photos. However, the U.S. collector was so excited to meet Dennis Britain, the retired head of Britains Ltd., that Bill took a photo of him holding a figure created by his father, William Britain Jr. The physician became “pen pals” with Dennis, who was in his 90s at the time. Eventually the photo Bill snapped became the basis of a special W. Britain Collectors Club figure of Dennis issued in 1996, the same year he died. A number of Britains experts have realized that Dennis didn’t bring the earliest Life Guard mold and an example dating to 1893 as he believed and shared with the dinner audience, according to author James Opie. A figure from the first version of set No. 1, which became known as the “Germanic Life Guard,” would have been a 52-mm horseman with a fixed arm. In the 1894 second version of the set, Britains painted crossbelts on the figures and added an officer on a rearing horse. To replace the Germanic Life Guard, William Britain Jr. designed an improved version with molded aiguillettes introduced in 1897 for the Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee souvenir set No. 72. Essentially, it became the blueprint for Britains 54-mm Life Guards until the end of hollow-cast production in 1966. Opie has observed that it was an example of the 1897 figure that Dennis was so fondly holding in the photo, and thus with the commemorative figure of himself. --Stuart A.
