First on February 20, Dr. John Kantner of the University of North Florida, will give us an update on his work in Chaco Canyon. The stunning monu- mental buildings in Chaco Canyon have yielded some of the most amazing artifacts ever found in the ancient American Southwest. Next on February 23rd we have our second In-Depth Series Seminar: “Archaeology for Beginners”. This is a three day class on the fundamentals including: classroom, digging, analyzing finds and cataloging. It will be taught by Dr. Steven Derfler. It will be held at the Curry Houses Historic District in Bradenton. A flyer, on page three of this newsletter describes the whole seminar. There is limited space so register today. Applications are on the website and included with this email. If you have any topics or subjects you would like to hear about, please let us know because we are starting to put together ideas for next season’s lectures. Thousands of turquoise ornaments, copper bells and chocolate from Mesoamerica, and shell trum- pets from the Pacific Ocean are just some of the rare and beautiful objects found by archaeologists in the 1,000- year-old edifices of this re- mote canyon. But while to- day we marvel at these treas- ures, what did they mean to the ancient Puebloan people who lived in the Chaco World?
