The school opened in 2010 and there has been a problem with the flues in the biomass boilers ever since. The chimneys are three metres below the building’s highest point so the smoke enters via the ventilation system and is afecting the wellbeing of students and staf at Bexhill High. Reports of illness vary from people feeling dizzy to staf being found to have high levels of carbon monoxide in their blood. One had pulmonary scarring on her lungs and a GMB member has been diagnosed with occupational asthma. The school was taken over by the Prospects Academies Trust in 2012. The group was made aware of this severe health and safety issue and they have taken several measures to resolve it. However, GMB believes it is not providing any long-term solutions to the problem. With an annual turnover of £76m, Prospects Group could bear the financial brunt of resolving the issue once and for all.
