Why Children’s Dental Health Needs a Youth Movement #MySmileMatters Youth Movement, an Initiative of America’s ToothFairy, was created in 2013 and remains the nation’s only youth engagement effort geared toward children’s dental health and wellness. Despite tooth decay being the #1 chronic childhood disease in the US, the issue remains under the radar and overlooked in many circles. America’s ToothFairy believes young people need to be engaged in addressing the issues they face. Today, the “noise” in the world related to health concerns can be overwhelming, and it is no wonder issues like childhood obesity, asthma, and cancer get so much attention as they are all life-threatening and can be dangerous…but so is tooth decay, if left untreated. It is the intent of America’s ToothFairy to engage youth in becoming advocates, not only for their own dental health and wellness, but that of peers and friends through the #MySmileMatters Youth Movement. Using this year’s theme, Cavities are NOT Supposed to Happen, America’s ToothFairy invites all young people to help us change the conversation and raise the optics on children’s dental health and wellness…and have fun doing it! The #MySmileMatters National Youth Engagement Plan is full of ways to help adult allies and youth facilitate projects to change beliefs, behaviors, and the environment related to dental health and wellness. While we offer a ton of great projects, we invite the creativity of young people into the process. Cavities are NOT Supposed to Happen: Addressing Social Norms Related to Dental HealthA “social norm” is a commonly held belief, ranging from expectations to unwritten rules. Theyoften exist within nations, regions, social groups, ethnicities, and other societal delineations.Social norms can shape our choices, thus impacting our lives significantly in some cases. Ourperceptions of what others think or do may influence our own personal choices and behaviors. It is customary in many households to brush your teeth twice a day. We see national campaignsupholding this belief and, it is, in fact, healthy to brush your teeth twice a day. To many, it isalso a commonly held belief that “everybody gets cavities.” Additionally, the consequences oftooth decay are not considered detrimental as long as appropriate treatment is applied (i.e., thedentist fills the cavity). The truth is Cavities are NOT Supposed to Happen and not everybodygets them. The social norm, or belief, that cavities are “a part ofgrowing up” or “everyone gets them” is simply not true.Although cavities are largely preventable, they remain themost common chronic disease for children (ages 6-11) andadolescents (ages 12-19)1 in the US. Because of this, it is essentialfor youth to learn more about the issues related to dental health andbecome advocates for change in their school, community, and possiblyeven their own state.2 www.MySmileMatters.org www.AmericasToothFairy.org

How to Use the#MySmileMatters National Youth Engagement PlanThis plan is intended to provide a ready-to-use model for helping youth and their adult alliesintegrate dental health advocacy, learning, and teaching opportunities into their school andcommunity without having to think about it too much. By giving youth-led groups and initiativesa place to start, we invite you to take on the issue of children’s dental health and wellness fromthree perspectives: 1. Activities to increase dental health literacy by changing beliefs Example: Dental health education in schools or uncovering community data related to dental health access 2. Activities to change dental health habits by changing behavior: Example: Establishing brushing programs in elementary schools or holding a water demonstration in a school cafeteria 3. A ctivities effecting whole populations by changing the environment: Example: Removing sugar-sweetened beverages from school grounds or ensuring all students have a water bottleTo design an effective dental health initiative, it is recommended that you choose activitieswithin each of the three areas. Activities changing beliefs are often about building awareness orproviding basic education. While important, they may not create long-lasting change. Activitiesseeking to change behavior may be a bit more complex, but often include programming makingit simpler for certain behaviors to occur…or not occur (depends on the desired outcome).Activities seeking to change the environment are typically the most complex, but they may alsocreate lifelong change effecting many people. Choose a mix of activities from the lists or makeup your own in order to make dental health and wellness interesting and FUN!!!Steps for Becoming a #MySmileMatters Youth Group/Member1. Changing Beliefs: Start a New ConversationYouth advocates must start by learning what their school/community knows or perceives whenit comes to dental health issues, practices, and problem-solving. If you want to create change, you first have to understand the problem at hand. Start with a simple survey or focus group. Askpeople you know about their knowledge and practices when it comes to their own dental health.Review the data collected and begin to tell the true story of what people know and what actionsthey take to address their own dental health and wellness. If we want to change beliefs, wemust educate first. Below are examples of commonly held beliefs (social norms) youth can useto start a new conversation related to dental health and wellness. You can also come up withyour own!Social Norm TruthEverybody gets cavities Cavities are NOT supposed to happenFlossing is not important if you brushtwice a day Floss once a day to clean where yourBaby teeth do not matter and fall out anyway toothbrush cannot reach2 Baby teeth hold the right space forEverybody goes to the dentist permanent teeth3Everybody has equal access to Some people do not have a dentist nearfluoridated water their home and live in “dental deserts”4Water is boring About 25% of the US does not have fluoridated community water5 Water is vital for optimal health Activities to Change Beliefs• A pply for a ToothFairy 101 Community Education Kit & teach younger children healthy dental habits• C reate a social media campaign using the theme Cavities are NOT Supposed to Happen• C reate posters, flyers, & fact sheets on children’s dental health• Conduct a policy study in your school/community related to a dental health issue• Investigate school nutrition options for students• D etermine if there are food deserts in your community• R esearch to see if water sources in your community contain fluoride• Study availability of sugar-sweetened beverages in your school/community• C onduct or participate in a health fair in your school/community & showcase dental health awareness efforts• C elebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month (February) & National Dental Hygiene Month (October) with social media & other events• C reate opportunities to connect dental health to overall health4 www.MySmileMatters.org www.AmericasToothFairy.org

Changing Behavior: Know Better-Do Better!Taking dental health literacy a step further, youth advocates can help peers, families membersand the community at-large begin to change their behavior related to dental health and wellness.Youth advocates are perfectly positioned to come up with a great idea, pitch it to an adult allyor leader, and make it happen. We also know when people know better they can do better. When we take the time to changebeliefs, we can actually influence behavior and the choices people make. Solidifying positivebehavior can take time. If we can start by making choices easier by addressing access andavailability to learning opportunities and care, we can begin to help those who know betterdo better. An example of changing behavior is making a more desirable choice easier for elementaryschool children by creating a toothbrushing program in the classroom. Establishing soliddental health habits at an early age sets the stage for good oral health later in life. High schoolstudents could help establish a program where elementary school children have a process forobtaining a toothbrush (Host a Smile Drive!), toothpaste, learn proper brushing techniques(Use the ToothFairy 101 Community Education Kit!), establish a daily classroom routine andhelp children become lifelong lunchtime toothbrushers! Changing the Environment: Making Positive Choices EasierChange is never easy, but the long-term impact of environmental change can be lasting.“Environmental change” is defined as changing systems, structures, regulations and ruleseffecting whole populations or segments of a community. When we can create change withinthe environment where someone lives, works and plays, we can essentially change his/herability to make choices. When we make positive choices easier, or simply “the norm,” bychanging the environment in which choices are made, we can impact many more people atone time and over time.Changing the environment is not simple, nor quickly done. America’s ToothFairy believes youthcan begin to uncover local conditions to change beliefs (awareness and understanding), startto move the needle on behavioral change, and eventually have significant impact by changingthe environment in which people live, learn and play (e.g., schools, community, home, etc.).There are many ways to change the environment, but it all starts with understanding currentconditions. Conditions are shaped by beliefs and policies. Sometimes just a simple “rule”can have a large impact. Once uncovered, conditions can be changed, thus creating moreopportunities for better decisions to be made and made more easily. Hosting an Awesome Smile DriveAmerica’s ToothFairy is home to the annual Smile Drive effort designed to raise awareness ofthe importance of dental health and to collect much needed dental care products for children inneed. If you have ever conducted a food or blood drive, then you already understand the basicsof a Smile Drive: collect stuff and give it to other people. While America’s ToothFairy focuses on Smile Drive in February during National Children’s DentalHealth Month, your group can host one anytime for any length of time. Some of our best “SmileDrivers” are youth groups who collect dental care products starting at the beginning of theschool year until the end of February. Others collect for just a short period of time and stillmanage to collect THOUSANDS of products. Not hundreds—THOUSANDS! Smile Drive Tips 1. Prepare early. Map out: a. Who: Who will lead the effort and who will you target for donations? Who will receive your product once it is collected? (You choose a local youth-serving organization in your community to receive your donations.) b. W here: Where will you place your Smile Drive boxes? The more boxes the better! Host a box making party! c. W hen: When will you start and how long will your collection last? d. How Much: Set your goal HIGH! Aim for the thousands! 2. R egister your Smile Drive with America’s ToothFairy: http://bit.ly/ATSD2016 3. P romote! Promote! Promote! Download the Smile Drive Toolkit (sent to you when you register) or make your own signs using the America’s ToothFairy logo. Use social media, the local TV and radio station and newspaper to tell everyone you are doing a Smile Drive. 4. Design a contest between student groups and teachers, coaches and players, dental practices and local businesses to invite them to collect with you. 5. Allow for monetary donations. Set up donation containers to collect extra change or a whole check and your group can purchase product in bulk. 6. Partner with a local retailer that sells dental care products to see if you can host a collection day in their location. 7. Ask your dentist to help. Dentists may have toothbrushes to donate or can request donations from a local dental representative to see if he/she can help increase your collection. 8. Get your local place(s) of worship involved. Faith-based entities are great places for a Smile Drive and many have programs supporting children and youth in need who would love to receive your collected products. 9. Report your results! Your on-time report makes you eligible for great prizes! 10. Have fun and feel great about giving back to your community.8 www.MySmileMatters.org www.AmericasToothFairy.org
