Opening Prayer ARCHBISHOP JOSÉ GOMEZ Legatus Ecclesiastical Advisor & President of the USCCB THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8 LIVE 12PM EDT Angelus The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary... Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to thy word. Hail Mary... And the Word was made flesh. And dwelt among us. Hail Mary... Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ, thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection. DR. ANDREW ABELA Virtuous Administration: A Practice Guide to Building Habits of Excellence in Business A virtue is a good habit — a habit of excellence — and a vice is a bad habit. Most faithful Catholics know that. But do you also know that St. Thomas Aquinas, in his Summa Theologica, identified more than 50 specific virtues and organized them into every aspect of our lives? These include orderliness, diligence, truthfulness, magnanimity, and many others. In this talk, Dr. Abela will explain how all the virtues fit together, will share several of these examples, and will show you how you can participate in this project. Dr. Andrew Abela is the founding dean of the Busch School of Business at The Catholic University of America, where he has been instrumental in raising over $75 million for the school and university. He served as the Provost and the senior vice president of Catholic University (2015-19), where he was responsible for all the University’s academic operations. Dr. Abela’s research in the area of marketing and communications effectiveness has been published in several academic and professional journals. His work on Catholic Social Doctrine applied to business resulted in the prize-winning book A Catechism for Business, co-edited with Dr. Joe Capizzi and currently in its second edition. He was the 2009 winner of the Novak Award, a $10,000 prize given by the Acton Institute for “significant contributions to the study of the relationship between religion and economic liberty.” He provides consulting on effective communication of complex or controversial information, and on measuring ROI of philanthropic gifts. Prior to his academic career, he was brand manager at Procter & Gamble, management consultant with McKinsey & Company, and Managing Director of the Marketing Leadership Council of the Corporate Executive Board, and was a charter member of the Arlington, VA chapter of Legatus. He holds a B.Sc. from the University of Toronto, an MBA from the Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland, and a Ph.D. in Marketing and Ethics from the Darden Business School at the University of Virginia. He and his wife Kathleen have six children and live in Great Falls, Virginia. He is a native of the island of Malta. AARON BEAM Winning Ethically in Business Moral reminders are imperative and setting a high ethical bar requires hard work, sharp senses and more than a little courage. While a single decision can alter the path, thinking about ethical dilemmas and creating a course of action can improve the odds that one makes the right choice. Faith should be a filter that life can run through and that could have been the missing piece when the decisions that altered Aaron’s career and life were faced. Mr. Beam was a co-founder of Healthsouth and the company’s first CFO. From 1984 to 1996 he helped grow Healthsouth into a Fortune 500 company. However, in 1996 he took part in an accounting fraud at the company that resulted in one of the largest corporate frauds in U.S. history. In 2003 he pled guilty to the crime and was sent to federal prison. He began his public speaking career in 2008 and as of 2020 has spoken to over 1000 different groups. These include universities, associations, companies, churches and civic groups. His primary message is about corporate fraud, who is actually responsible, how they take place, and what can be done to prevent frauds such as Enron and Healthsouth. While Mr. Beam does not consider himself a motivational speaker, he does hope his speeches will motivate people to live a more ethical life. The latest venture is his podcast Aaron Beam Speaks where ethical issues are examined and guests share their stories. It can be found on all popular platforms or launched from the website. Mr. Beam is also an author. His books include, Healthsouth: The Wagon to Disaster and Ethics Playbook: Winning Ethically in Business. He graduated from Bossier High School and LSU in 1967. Today he lives in Loxley, Alabama with his wife, Phyllis. Click here to visit Aaron Beam’s website 9

HUGH BLANE A Leader’s Journey From Living In Fear To Living In Holy Boldness Embedded in the Catholic faith is the promise of an extravagant love, unconditional mercy, and an intimacy with Jesus that creates a new heaven on earth. Most Catholics know of these promises, but all too often live their lives based on fear. Not because the promises are untrue, but because the audacity of the promises leave them feeling unworthy of a love of such magnitude. Hugh Blane knows all to well the fear of not being worthy of God’s extravagant love. Hugh left the church at age 23 and replaced his Catholic faith with a devotion to eastern mysticism and business success. Eastern mysticism was his key to enlightenment and wisdom, and business success was his promise of a flourishing life. Through Ignatian Spirituality, Hugh found his way back, not only to the church, but also to the reality that his greatest fears were the jumping off point for God’s promises and that fear had reduced his business success by millions of dollars. In this highly personal and practical presentation you will learn how to: 1. Identify the one fear that prevents you from living in Holy Boldness. 2. Learn a fifteen minute process that transforms fear into flourishing. 3. Adopt the Human Flourishing Model at work for accelerated business success. Hugh Blane is the President of Claris Consulting and is the go-to expert for converting human potential into accelerated business results. His work centers on helping executives and entrepreneurs challenge assumptions, jettison complacency and catapult growth. He is the author of 7 Principles of Transformational Leadership: Create A Mindset of Passion Innovation and Growth and his clients include Sony Pictures, Starbucks, Nordstrom, Microsoft, Pepperdine University, KPMG and Costco. He facilitates Ignatian Spirituality programs for his parish in Normandy Park, Washington, and is the host of the Catholic podcast, The Holy Boldness Project. Sheen. Louis Brown, J.D., is the executive director of the Christ Medicus Foundation, a Catholic health care nonprofit. A graduate of Michigan State University and Howard University School of Law, Mr. Brown, more than anything, is a Catholic man who seeks to totally depend on the Holy Spirit. His experiences includes serving as staffer for a state Catholic conference, as a Congressional staffer and legislative counsel responsible for health care policy for a pro-life Catholic Congressman on Capitol Hill, and as a political appointee at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Fr. CARTER GRIFFIN Forming Priests Today In this talk Fr. Griffin discusses some of the opportunities and the challenges posed in seminary formation today. The young men stepping forward to discern a priestly vocation are generous, faithful to the Church, and fired with enthusiasm. They are also emerging from a wider culture that is more distant from God and often hampers growth in human maturity, masculinity, and healthy sexuality. Fr. Griffin identifies some of the ways that seminaries today are striving to meet those challenges. Father Carter Griffin is a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington, DC. Raised Presbyterian, he converted to Catholicism while attending Princeton University. After graduating in 1994, he served for four years as a line officer in the United States Navy prior to entering the seminary. He attended Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland for two years of philosophy followed by the North American College in Rome for five years of theology. Father Griffin was ordained to the priesthood in 2004 and served as priest-secretary for three years before beginning doctoral studies in Rome in 2008. After completing his doctorate and serving as the parochial vicar of St. Peter’s parish on Capitol Hill, in 2011 he was appointed Director of Priest Vocations for the Archdiocese of Washington and Vice-Rector of St. John Paul II Seminary, where he now serves as Rector. He is the author of Why Celibacy: Reclaiming the Fatherhood of the Priest, published in 2019 by Emmaus Road. Dcn. OMAR GUTIERREZ The Vocation of Business Some of us are tempted to think that I must pursue sanctity outside of or despite my work, my profession. Gutiérrez is the President and Co-founder of the Evangelium Institute and the Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the Archdiocese of Omaha. RANDY HAMMOND Position Yourself to Serve in the Second Half Many of us want to apply our professional experience towards strengthening the Church and serving others. I struggled with this for years and found it difficult to balance work responsibilities with my service efforts. Following a series of family tragedies, I left the business world and entered a small door into a large room—the large room of the Catholic Church. Where I found unexpected fulfillment. Eventually, I determined business ownership was the route toward my goal. I acquired a business partner, a fellow Legate, and together we oversee the business. Without having to manage the day-to-day operations, I can focus full-time on serving the Church. Business ownership may seem daunting, but with the right plan, it can provide an income stream and create flexibility to pursue service. Randy Hammond is the Managing Principal of Advent Capital. He previously served as Executive Director of The Amazing Parish, a national Catholic apostolate. Randy was a Managing Director with J.P. Morgan; with Merrill Lynch, he held management roles across the U.S. In 2009, he was named among the ‘Top 100’ financial services leaders by On Wall Street magazine. In the Marine Corps, Randy served as a combat flight leader in Desert Storm. He was decorated three times for heroism, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, and retired from the Marine Corps Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel. Randy grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and graduated from Millsaps College where he was a member of the football team. He has four children and four grandchildren and lives with his wife and daughter in Littleton, Colorado. Click here to visit the Advent Capital Management website 31

JOHN JAMES Doing Good While Doing Well A discussion on how a commitment to community and ethics has led the growth of James Group International From the battlefield to the shop floor, John James has placed service before self. A husband, father, combat veteran, and businessman, John James believes Michigan deserves a U.S. Senator that can achieve tangible results. At 17, John decided to serve his country. A 2004 West Point graduate, he became a Ranger- qualified aviation officer. John served with distinction in Operation Iraqi Freedom where he earned a Combat Action Badge (CAB) and two Air Medals while logging 753+ flight hours in theater leading two Apache platoons. While James was serving in Iraq, the recession was hitting Michigan hard and Detroit harder. In his hometown area, some of Michigan looked worse than war-torn Baghdad. So, James came home to serve in a different way, as a job provider. After eight years of service to the nation, John James was honorably discharged and returned to Michigan to work in the family business: James Group International. As President, John James grew the company into a major trading partner with Michigan’s auto industry. He also served on Governor Rick Snyder’s mobility council and Veterans Trust Committee, and Detroit Mayor Duggan’s Workforce Development Council. John James found ways to serve his community as he continued his education, raised a family, and created jobs in the city where he was born. In addition to his Bachelor of Science from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, John earned a Master of Supply Chain Management and Information Systems from Penn State University and an MBA from the University of Michigan. John is also a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. John, his wife, Liz, and his 3 sons reside in Farmington Hills, Michigan. JOHN JAMES Click here to visit John James’ website

JOE JORDAN Don’t Waste This Crisis! My presentation is called “Don’t Waste this Crisis!” I talk about how the Covid-19 pandemic has presented a combination of financial and health challenges that cannot be overcome through “business as usual.” These are extraordinary challenges that also create immense opportunities if we build trust and relationships and bring back Christian values to our business rather than focus just on the numbers. My name is Joe Jordan and I am an inspirational speaker, behavioral finance expert, and author of the award-winning book, Living a Life of Significance, now available in five languages. I have 46 years of experience in the financial services industry and have spoken to over 450,000 advisors in 30 countries. It is my privilege to be a member of Legatus of New York City. My goal is to move the industry from the head to the heart and bring Christian values to business. Too often we focus on short term goals and lose sight of our true passion and purpose. While my message is primarily for financial advisors, the principles are applicable to any field since the ultimate purpose is to live a significant life. Formerly, I ran insurance sales at Paine Webber and more recently was a senior vice president at MetLife. I was responsible for retail product development and started their fee-based financial planning program and behavioral finance department. For three consecutive years, I have been honored by Irish America magazine as one of the “Top 50 Irish Americans on Wall Street.” Click here to visit Joe Jordan’s website 43

Dcn. MARK KELLEY The Myth of Living a Compartmentalized Life We are called to live authentic lives in all we do. We do not need to sort ourselves into multiple personalities; to be a different person at work, with family, or in community. The most fruitful life is when we engage our whole and true self in all we do. The foundation is our Catholic Christian Faith and it flows and grows into our Family, Community, and Work by way of our authenticity. It is a myth that we will be more accomplished / successful by compartmentalizing our life. Mark Kelley has over 35 years of experience within the construction industry. It is his broad experience that has given Mark a deep-rooted understanding and insight to company operations that provides him with an intrinsic ability to oversee at an executive level. Kelley Construction is named a Top 400 Contractor in the United States by Engineering News Record (ENR). Kelley Construction’s peerless market diversity includes: Commercial, Food Service, Healthcare, and Industrial throughout the United States. Mark and his brother, equal owners in the company, succeed their father who started Kelley Construction in 1978 and today, the third generation are well involved to be the future of Kelley Construction. Mark was ordained Deacon in 2016 in Louisville, Kentucky and is currently in St. Michael’s parish. He is currently President of Legatus Louisville Chapter. Mark is affiliated with the American Petroleum Institute (API) as a member of SCAST, past Chairman of University of Louisville’s Family Business Center (FBC). Dr. PAUL KENGOR Today’s Socialist Threat: The Church’s Response and Your Response as Businesspeople There has been a shocking surge in support for socialism in America in recent years. A majority of young people in particular say they support socialism over capitalism. A striking number of Americans of all ages say they would vote for a socialist for president. Many even praise communism. But how do these Americans define socialism, or communism? Do they correctly understand these ideologies? What do these words actually mean? And what do these ideologies in practice actually do? How do the practitioners of these ideologies feel about faith? Alas, how has the Catholic Church responded to these ideologies? The answer is that the Church has been responding as far back as 1846, and profoundly so. The Church has also told us how Catholics should respond. Catholic laypeople must do their part to resist these destructive ideologies, and Catholic businesspeople in particular can play a special and important role. Paul Kengor, PhD, is the New York Times bestselling author of God and Ronald Reagan, The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism, 11 Principles of a Reagan Conservative, Dupes, The Communist, and his latest book, The Devil and Karl Marx. A professor of political science and the executive director of the Center for Vision and Values at Grove City College, he has written for a range of popular and scholarly publications, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, National Review, Political Science Quarterly, Christianity Today, the National Catholic Register, and the National Catholic Reporter. Fr. SEAN KILCAWLEY Light in the Darkness: Leading by example in the culture of death Our country, our Church, and even our parishes seem more divided than at any time in our own memory, and at the same time Our Lord Jesus Christ is relentless in his mercy and the fulfillment of his own prayer “that we may be one”. In this talk Fr Sean Kilcawley will particularly focus on the relationship between the hyper-sexualized culture and the culture of death, and provide a vision for practical ways Catholic business leaders may lead by example in building a civilization of love within our communities. Fr. Sean Kilcawley is a 1996 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 1999 he left active military service to enter the seminary for the Diocese of Lincoln and was ordained a priest in 2005. In 2013, Fr. AL KRESTA Fireside Chat | Faith, Business, & Stakeholders Friday, October 9, 12:00pm EDT Panelists: Tom Monaghan and Peter Coors Moderator: Al Kresta Al Kresta is a broadcaster, writer and author. He is President and CEO of Ave Maria Radio and host of “Kresta in the Afternoon.” He draws upon his unique faith background to create what is, arguably, the most fascinating — and most spiritually constructive — talk radio program on the radio today. A graduate of Michigan State University, Al became known in Detroit for his program, Talk from the Heart. A Protestant at the time, Al was led to return to the Catholic Church. His conversion is told in the anthology Surprised By Truth. In 1997, Legatus founder Tom Monaghan recruited Al to launch Ave Maria Communications. Heard on more than 350 stations and Sirius Satellite, Kresta in the Afternoon looks at all areas of life through the lens of Scripture and the teaching of the Catholic Church. Over the years, Al has engaged in vigorous discussions with nationally known figures from politics, the arts, the Church, academia and business. Kresta’s life and spiritual journey took on a new dimension in February 2003, when he lost his left leg to necrotizing fasciitis, a virulent infection often referred to as the “flesh-eating bacteria.” His experience has given him new insights into the realities of suffering and hope. He is the author of several books including Dangers to the Faith: Recognizing Catholicism’s 21st Century Opponents, Moments of Grace: Inspiring Stories From Well-Known Catholics, and Why Are Catholics So Concerned about Sin?: More Answers to Puzzling Questions about the Catholic Church.
