MEDICAL SOCIAL SERVICE

St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation, Inc.Medical Social Service provides assistance to those who need it the most, ensuringnot only the recovery of indigent patients, but also providing aid by helping alleviatethem from their burdens of poverty. The absence of a reliable social welfare system in the country has made theFoundation’s work in supporting the St. Luke’s Social Service arm even moreimportant, by augmenting and complimenting their programs to reach more people. In 2016, the number of Social Service beneficiaries that the Foundation hadsubsidized more than doubled, and a good portion of these patients are thepoorest of the poor. In addition, the Foundation, in partnership with the NursingCare Group of St. Luke’s–Global City and the DSWD, also launched the CommunityAdoption Program with a village in Taguig City, targeting long-term lifestlylechanges for their residents.9 3 Number of patients 9% served in 2016. 4% 9%2 4 Number of patients 10% 54% served in 2015. 14%Medication Assistance Medical Supplies OthersDiagnostic Procedure Cost of ChemodrugsOperating Room Charges4,766,600P Total amount alloted to social service funding. MEDICAL OUTREACH PROGRAMS

St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation, Inc.Medical and surgical outreach programs allow our practitioners to interact withurban and rural villages who have no access to basic medical services. This lackof medical access is a common problem for many small communities. As there is agreat number of physicians in urban areas, outreach programs are crucial in that itallows competent practitioners to venture out to places with little to no doctors, inorder to provide for the Filipinos in underserved areas. Although disbursement for outreach programs dived by almost 50%, the numberof projects has in fact doubled, thanks to our partnership with Sagip Bayan, whichhas allowed us to venture out to more communities. In these activities, St. Luke’sdoctors, nurses, and volunteers served constituents as far as Romblon, Bataan, andAurora, and included numerous procedures including major surgeries.1 , 0 2 8 , 8 8 8 Totalamount disbursed into outreachP programs in 2016.14,027 8,000 Number of patients served 7,500 Total number of patients served OpthalSmurolgiocgaly 7,000 Dental 6,500 Major Surgery [40] Others 6,000 Minor Surgery [633] 5,500 Circumcision [876] ProcedMureediscal 5,000 Eye Check-up/Consultation [850] 4,500 Eye Surgery [43] 4,000 Dental [2,450] 3,500 ECG [415] 3,000 OB-GYNE Check-up [110] 2,500 Sugar Test [432] 2,000 Medical Procedures [8,178] 1,500 1,000 500 0ANNUAL REPORT 2016

MEDICAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation, Inc.For the underprivileged with dreams of pursuing medicine, entering medical schoolis seen as a burden to their families. These bright young minds oftentimes findthe dream to be selfish—as they are expected by their parents to work instead inorder to help sustain their families. However, we at the Foundation believe that theaspiration to become a doctor should be available to all. The Foundation provides full scholarships to promising students especially fromlower income brackets—which includes payment for their tuition fees, laboratory, clinical and miscellaneous fees, as well as book allowance. For a medical educationof four years, tuition fee costs alone can go up to P1.3 million. In 2016, two bright scholars were included into the Foundation’s roster.11 Medical students who are Foundation- funded.3,628,351P Total amount granted to Medical Scholarships. ANNUAL REPORT 2016

MEDICAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation, Inc.One of the pillars of medicine is continuous research and development. This allowsskilled doctors and scientists to discover new cures, or provide new ways to manageprotocols for illnesses. In specific cases like the Philippines, research allows us toseek pro-poor strategies, or to create vaccines from natural resources abundant inour country. For example, we have disbursed more than one million pesos for research anddevelopment, as a study on anti-inflammatory properties of an herbal plant is underwraps at the St. Luke’s College of Medicine’s Research Management Office. As theresearch becomes more intensive, we hope that this local medicine will soon beavailable to all.1 , 2 8 1 , 2 5 0P Total amount granted to research & development2 x More than the amount granted in the previous year ANNUAL REPORT 2016
