06 www.writeawaymag.co.ukI want to write a love song, most songs are about love, aren’t they? I need to be writing love songs because that’s what everyone writes about. That’s what everyone wants to hear. If I’m going to write decent lyrics, I better do what everyone else does… right? But I’m not in love, not falling head over heels, butterflies in my belly, can’t sleep at night in love. Those are some really bad, overused metaphors aren’t they? So, how am I supposed to write a decent love song if I’m not even in love right now?I’m Glad You AskedThis challenge is a balance between the classic “write what you know” advice (usually attributed to the 19th century American author Mark Twain) and “write from the heart,” that is letting your songwriting flow from your emotions.“Write what you know” guides you to write songs about your own experiences, your areas of strength, so your lyrics are more convincing and authentic. Your audience will get it because you get it.“Writing from the heart” is allowing your ideas to flow, carefree writing using your musical intuition. Use your imagination to balance these two sometimes opposing songwriting approaches. Remember emotions and write about them in your song. If you were in love in the past, remember what it felt like and describe those experiences in your song. If you’ve never been in love then your best option is to rely on sec-ond hand accounts that describe love in a way you understand it enough to express it for others. What Emotions are You Writing Into Your Song? The Pathetic Fallacy is granting human emotions to inanimate objects, like “angry skies,” “raging seas” or “lazy clouds.” John Ruskin, a nineteenth century British writer and philosopher coined the term Pathetic Fallacy (pathetic from pathos = emo-tions / feelings, and fallacy = false) meaning “false emotions.” He was reacting to excessive sentimentality in poetry, but we can also examine songs through this lens.A song triggers emotions in the listener, it doesn’t inherently have any emotions of its own. As a songwriter you don’t create an emotional song, you write a song that inspires an emotional reaction in others. To take this a step further, as a songwriter you don’t have to feel the emotional state you’re going to inspire with a song. You don’t have to be happy to write a happy song. You don’t need to feel love or be in love to write a love song. It can feel confusing because if you’ve been in love it’s easier to write a song about being in love… but you don’t have to be feeling it while you’re writing because you can use your memory and imagination! But I’m Still Not Feeling the Love…That’s what your imagination is for! Let’s start with my favourite songwriting solution… find the answers in the songs you love!Types of Love Song: ExerciseBrainstorm titles of love songs, then go through your favourite music playlists and add more titles. Choose ten songs, listen to them and decide what type of love song they are, for example: good love, bad love, love gone wrong, first love, beginning love, still in love after all these years, the love is over, etc.Choose “love theme” that interests you and write a song. You don’t have to be in love to write a song about bad love.Love Metaphors: ExerciseStart a list of metaphors, similes and allusions about or describ-ing love.Begin with the songs from the previous exercise and find the figurative language about love.Play with them, writing your own versions or change and twist them to fit your writing style.Add your own ideas to the list.Use the most interesting ones in your own songs.Write Through a Character: ExerciseChoosing to write a song from the perspective of a character (instead of your own) is a great way to explore ideas. Write a love song (or any song) from someone else’s point of view. Make it convincing by keeping consistent with the perspective and voice of your character. You can still write from the first person, How Do I Write a Love Song Whe

Imagine Emotions: ExerciseRemember an emotional moment or situation. Start with a safe or happy moment before exploring dark or painful situations. How did it make you feel? What physical sensations do you remember? What was it like for you? Once you’ve imagined and remembered, write about it in point form. With a little practice you can imagine yourself in fictional situations and access emotions you remember from other experiences.SummaryWrite a song, finish the draft and improve it. Don’t get stuck trying to write the best song in the world. An okay song that’s finished is better than half a brilliant song. Finish the song!Write and stop worrying about how good your song is or isn’t. You’ll write songs that won’t be strong enough to release but will still be a learning expe-rience that helps you grow as a songwriter. Not every song you write needs to be great. As a songwriter, your lyrics need to tell an interesting story and evoke an emotional response in your audience… that’s what makes a song great!Further ReadingNot Another Love Song. Lyric Evaluation Series 17 - 50By Dar n righty W08 www.writeawaymag.co.ukHello readers. We are in a series of questions that help us to evaluate our lyric creations. After you complete a set of lyrics, you should go through a check list, and determine the overall score for your lyrics. There are fifty questions you should be asking yourself during this evaluation stage, and scoring each answer from zero to two. A perfect score is 100. A desired score is 80 and above. A score less than 80 means you need to score better on other areas of your song to compensate for the lack of good lyrics, or refine and rewrite the lyrics you have. The first set of five questions involved the THEME, and the second set of seven questions involved the lyric FORM. The set of questions we are discussing is the LYRICS themselves. Keep in mind music does not need to follow any set pattern or rules, however, if it fits in a genre or sub-genre, that genre or sub-genre will dictate what rules the songs will need to follow to be considered a part of that group.Last question we asked if the lyrics are unnecessarily wordy. This month, we are asking if the title or the hook is memorable.Have you ever tried to remember a song but you could not remember the title?Failing to have a memorable title, or hook, can cause great difficulty to its overall success. How hard will it be for someone to call a radio station to request a song if they cannot remember the title or the hook, or worse yet, both.Suppose you completed your song, and you submitted it to a famous artist to consider for recording. How likely would it be they will take a song if they cannot remember the title?Having a song title people can remember is important, but it goes deeper than that. Is it worth remembering? Does it make you want to know what the song is about? Will the title stick in your head after the song? If someone cannot remember the title, can they remember the hook?If the title or hook is unusual, or special, it can be memorable. Some of the more memorable titles involve events, names, numbers, colors, and physical items. A few examples are The Rose, Bat Out Of Hell, Sweet Home Alabama, The Yellow Rose Of Texas, and Tequila. It is time to evaluate your lyrics against this question. Being honest with yourself will help improve your writing skills. For this, you should ask a stranger to listen to the song. After the song can they remember the title, and can they remember the hook.If both the title and hook of your song is hard to remembered, score a 0. If the title or the hook is memorable, but not both, score a 1.If the song and the hook are both memorable, score a 2.A score of less than two should indicate the lyrics contain some unnecessary wording, which may require a rewrite to fix that.Whatever your evaluation, keep track of the scores and continue evaluating with all 50 questions before rewriting your lyric. This is a great way to see your strong points and your weak points, allowing you to focus on what you need to improve on in the future, whether it is in rewriting lyrics or writing new ones.Use your own good judgement, and be honest with yourself when scoring. You have 33 more questions to go. I will see you next month for question 18Happy evaluating.Written by Daryn Wrightwww.darynwright.comwww.reverbnation.com/darynwrighthttps://www.facebook.com/Daryn.Wright.Fan.Pagehttps://www.facebook.com/daryn.wright.7/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdZ_16oxmTvF_d7UT6C9kKQ

10 www.writeawaymag.co.ukIf you’re a singer—whether in a choir or in a rock band, onstage or in the shower. you should know how to keep your singing voice healthy. After all, the state of your vocal health can either make or break your performance. Thankfully, vocal health for singers isn’t too complicated. Some common sense and a little insider knowledge on vocal-health tips will do the trick, so you can sing your heart out.WHY HEALTHY VOCAL CORDS ARE IMPORTANT FOR YOUR SINGINGAs a singer, your vocal cords are your instrument. You’d never paddle a canoe with a cello or use a flute to hit a golf ball. Likewise, you should never abuse your voice. Healthy vocal cords will allow you Don’t be afraid to make some noise as your warm to exercise your full range and produce a full, pure, tuneful sound. IF YOU WANT A DAREER AS A SINGER, YOUR VOCAL HEALTH SHOULD BE YOUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY.WHAT ARE VOCAL CORDS?Vocal cords, also called vocal folds, are two triangular bands of tissue that sit at the top of your windpipe. They’re open while you’re breathing, and when you speak or sing, they close, pulling tighter for higher notes, remaining loose for lower notes. You want your vocal cords soft, smooth, flexible and your voice to settle back into its normal speaking free of inflammation. CAN YOU DAMAGE YOUR VOCAL CORDS?Allergies, smoke (first- and secondhand), tension, overuse, abuse (like screaming) are all potentially damaging to your voice. Irritated or inflamed vocal cords won’t close efficiently, preventing you from hitting the higher notes in your range and producing a rougher, more breathy sound no matter during lessons and rehearsals. And don’t think that what note you’re singing. You might like a breathy sound, and that’s great, but well lubricated, and that means keeping your entire that should be your choice. Keep your voice flexible and healthy, and you’ll be able to sing in whatever style you choose. Here are seven suggestions for ways to maintain vocal health for singers.WARM UP—AND COOL DOWN.It is vital that you warm up your voice before singing, and there are a variety of exercises to suit all ages, vocal ranges and levels of experience. Always ease into your exercises by first warming up your facial muscles—loosen your lips and jaw muscles by blowing through your lips, sticking out your tongue as far as it will go, massaging your face and sighing musically.up. Let your voice wander up and down its range. Then move onto humming, or perhaps do some gentle lip rolls or tongue trills. Only once you feel like your face, mouth and voice are loosening should you start singing actual notes. The whole process should take between 10 and 20 minutes (and don’t skimp.).After your lesson, audition or performance is over, take time to cool down. While cooling down is often omitted from lists of vocal-health tips, it’s a really simple way to support vocal health for singers. Sigh on a descending note. Yawn, raising your soft palate and releasing any built-up tension. Do some gentle lip rolls, again allowing your voice to gently descend. Take 5 or 10 minutes to allow range.HYDRATE YOUR VOICE.If you’re wondering what to drink to sing better, the answer is simple: water. Water is one of the best drinks for your singing voice, with herbal teas (but not too hot) in second place. Drink water throughout the day, and keep a water bottle nearby a swig or two of water while you’re warming up is enough. Your vocal folds work best when they’re body hydrated.V O C A L T I P SV O C A L T I P S
www.writeawaymag.co.uk 11There’s no way to directly moisten dry vocal cords. Nothing you drink or spray or dissolve in your mouth passes directly over your vocal folds. Your larynx is separate from your esophagus (and it’s a good thing too, or we’d always be choking). But dry vocal cords quickly become irritated vocal cords, and that’s how you harm your voice. The more water you drink, the better your voice will be.HUMIDIFY YOUR HOME.A better question than what to drink to sing better is what to breathe to sing better. Although nothing you drink can directly moisturize your vocal cords, you can give your voice a boost by breathing properly humidified air. Overly dry air is very taxing on your breathing and your voice.Consider humidifying your home, especially when you’re working on a particular production or if you’re doing a series of concerts. Using a humidifier Don’t worry if this doesn’t immediately make sense can support your respiratory health while also preventing dry vocal cords.TAKE VOCAL NAPS.If you work out, you know how important rest days are. A tired voice, just like a tired body, is more prone to injury. If you’re sick, if your allergies are flaring up or even if you’ve just been working your voice a lot (like in rehearsal or when you’re preparing for an audition), take time to rest your voice. That means no talking, no singing and definitely no whispering, which is terrible for your vocal cords. A tired voice needs time to regenerate, so the longer hurting.you rest it, the better. Vocal rest gives your delicate vocal folds time to recuperate and heal.AVOID HARMFUL SUBSTANCES.Smoking (or vaping) anything is absolutely the best and quickest way to permanently ruin your voice. Don’t do it. When you inhale smoke, you’re essentially bathing your vocal cords in toxins. Everything you breathe in—every pollutant, every speck of pollen, every particle of dust—passes right over your vocal cords, drying them out and irritating them.Alcohol might not have such an immediately damaging effect, but it is dehydrating and inflammatory. And the high sugar content of most mixers is also bad for your voice. If your vocal health is important to you , revisit tip #2 for suggestions on what to drink to sing better.DON’T SING FROM YOUR THROAT.Despite all this talk about healthy vocal cords, your vocal folds are only one part of a complex system that produces your singing voice. To sing well and to maintain your vocal health, you need to understand your body and know where your voice is coming from. You should never sing from your throat—the power behind your voice is your breath, and your breath should be supported by your diaphragm. Sing from your core, allow your vocal cords to relax, and let your voice resonate in your chest, pharynx and face.to you. It takes time to train your body to support your voice, though you can speed up the process by working with a vocal coach.DON’T SING IF IT HURTS.We feel pain for one simple reason—it’s our body’s way of telling us to STOP. If your throat hurts, if you have an infection of any kind or if you’ve strained your voice through overuse, don’t sing. Put yourself on vocal rest. Drink a lot of water. Get some extra sleep. Take care of yourself and your tired voice. But most importantly, do not push through the pain. You can seriously damage your voice by singing when your voice is strained or your throat is TAKE CARE OF YOUR TIRED VOICE. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY - DO NOT PUSH THROUGH THE PAIN.Vocal Vocal Vocal ChordChordChordPartiallyOpenClosedOpen
12 www.writeawaymag.co.ukDo Lyrics Need To Make Perfect Sense?Rock legend Meat Loaf sadly passed away recently, and I found myself revisiting some of his fabulous songs. I also watched a very interesting interview that he did with the veteran journalist Dan Rather back in 2016. The interview covered a wide range of topics, including his childhood, his rise to fame, and how acting informed his character-led approach to song performance. All of that was very interesting but, from a songwriting perspective, one thing that stood out to me was a discussion around the creation of his huge hit single ‘I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)’. In this article I’ll talk about that song (and a couple of others) and discuss whether lyrics need to make perfect sense.I’d do anything for love (But I won’t do that)Meat Loaf mentioned in the Dan Rather interview that he didn’t like performing his gargantuan 1993 global hit, because he felt under pressure to provide a flawless performance. But he also mentioned that he had probably been asked what ‘that’ was over a million times! The song was written by Meat Loaf’s regular songwriting partner Jim Steinman. Apparently, after the song had been recorded, Steinman turned to Meat Loaf and said ‘People aren’t going to know what that is’. Meat Loaf said his response was ‘What! Jimmy, are you crazy? People are not stupid, they’re gonna know’. He offered Steinman a hundred dollar bet and, of course, quickly had to pay out on that bet!The answer to the mystery is interesting to those of us who are into songwriting. There is a line just before the chorus that tells us what the ‘that’ is. For example, ‘ I’ll never forget the way you feel right now’. The reason why listeners rarely made the connection is because the chorus doesn’t just follow on with ‘I would do anything for love / But I won’t do that’. Instead, Steinman had Meat Loaf sing the ‘I would do anything for love’ line three times. The consequence of this is that by the time Meat Loaf utters the words ‘But I won’t do that’ we have forgotten the line that tells us exactly what it is that he won’t do.Some might regard the listeners’ confusion as a failure in the songwriting, but it certainly didn’t hinder the appeal of the song. For anyone who’s maybe too young to remember, this is a single that was Number 1 in 28 countries, and that sold over 1.4 million copies in the US alone. Indeed, maybe wondering and speculating about what ‘that’ might be actually added to its appeal?American PieI remember reading years ago that Don McLean has never explained the full meaning of the lyrics to American Pie, the song that catapulted him to stardom. More recently, I read an article where he explained that he had just sat down with a tape recorder and started singing. What came out in that first take was the whole of the first verse which is:‘A long, long time ago I can still remember how that music used to make me smile. And I knew if I had my chance that I could make those people dance And maybe they’d be happy for a while’Having recorded those lines, McLean apparently said to himself “What the heck was that?”Presumably, as he worked through the rest of the song, he had an idea of what it meant to him, but by leaving it unexplained it’s opened up the ability for each fan to think about it and interpret it in their own way. So much so that 7 prominent music writers were asked to give their opinions on what it means, and came up with different interpretations. Again then, like the Meat Loaf example, the lack of clarity (rather than there being perfect clarity) seems to have benefitted this song and helped elevate it to the revered status that it now enjoys. Presentation BoarderThe last of the three songs that I’ve picked out is by far the least famous. Presentation Boarder is a rowdy fun song by Irish group, The Saw Doctors. I’ve picked it, however, because The Saw Doctors are interesting from a songwriting perspective as their songs were so grounded in the locality of where they lived. I’m not talking about the songs just having an Irish flavour but rather than the songwriting tells stories about the lives of people living in the west of Ireland, and often employs the dialect and phrases common to that locality. Here’s a sample of the lyrics from Presentation BoarderShe was at the match on SundayWhen we bet the lads from SligoWe could’ve won by more I know

I had to look it up and saw that it means ‘a great looking girl’. ‘Peno’ would be understood, I expect, by most people in the UK (it means penalty) but that football-related slang probably doesn’t translate so well further afield. But I’d argue that you really don’t need to know the meaning of all the words to enjoy the sheer vibrancy and humour that shines through in this song, and in many of their others. The band’s principal songwriter, Leo Moran, has commented that there has never been a problem with fans not understanding or connecting with their songs. The band enjoyed a good level of commercial success in the 80s and 90s, and one of their biggest hits is ‘N17’ a song about a road in the west of Ireland. Moran explained that when they penned that track, people did say that English people wouldn’t have a clue what or where the N17 is. But he also commented that ‘there are equivalents of the N17 everywhere in the world, and there are equivalents of all the local things that we put in the songs’. On a similar vein, Bruce Springsteen hasn’t done too badlywriting songs that are undeniably grounded in his New Jersey roots. Don’t obsess with making perfect sense It grinds my gears a bit when I see discussions on songwriting feedback forums where people score a lyric down because they don’t get every cultural reference, or where the exact meaning of the song has not been made crystal clear. I think it shows a lack of understanding of how people listen to and appreciate songs. Hopefully the examples quoted in this article may encourage you to not be shackled by the need for every word and line of your song to be perfectly understandable. Indeed, if your lyricsreally are that easy to understand then it may be that they will lack a little interest for listeners.About Simon WrightSimon is an Irish lyric writer who lives in Scotland. This is where the use of metaphor really comes in handy. The descriptions you pick up on can be transformed into a highly engaging topic about an old conversation. For example, you might notice the way a bird’s feathers flutter in the wind. You can then use this detail as a metaphor for the way your life is going, i.e. up and down. Rather than just explicitly saying “up and down” you use a metaphor that explains your thinking.Paint a picture with these metaphors. Do not string a whole bunch of them together randomly. For instance, if you are using the bird metaphor, stick with the bird. Talk about the way it dives, eats, sleeps, breathes, etc. That vivid imagery will capture the imaginations of your song listeners.Q: What elements makes a melody memorable?A: The thing that makes a melody memorable is the repetition of the motif or musical phase. The motif is a small musical phase that is used throughout a melody. By repeating the main motif it “embeds” the melody into the listeners ear. Think of it this way. If you want to learn how to do something real well. You will practice what ever moves or actions required to master that skill. In effect its the repetition that build a strong memory on how to perform it. The same is with a melody. By repeating a motif of phase several times will help the listener better remember the melody.Q. How do you avoid using the same words/themes/rhymes/patterns when you write?A. For me, part of it is I keep a lot of different books of ideas and tapes of melodies and stuff like that,

You’re working with only so many notes and so many chords. The other thing I do is buy instruments I can’t play, and start playing them to see if I hit on something different than what I would do on the guitar. Sometimes that will motivate me to write something I never would have written before, because the instrument itself is giving me different tonalities than what I’m used to. Anything that breaks me out of the norm of what I’m doing assists me in coming up with something different.Q: I’ve written a pop song and I want to try and end the song in an interesting way. What can you suggest?A: A common way to end a pop song is to simply repeat the chorus line over and over again as the song fades away. Many Aerosmith songs such as “Love in an Elevator” use this fading action a lot. It is best used for loud, rhythmic, hard edged chorus lines. Other, more sad songs might end better coming back to your original starting point. If you started off slow and soft, bring it back there, to effectively “close” your story. You can also end your song on an instrumental, however, this is usually an artistic license allotted to bands which already have names for themselves. For example, the ending to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Freebird” is over five minutes worth of instrumentals. Derek and The Dominos “Layla” also has a long instrumental that varies in almost every way from the main song. However, you can play your basic riff a couple of times at the end of your song, just begging your audience to repeat and play again.-- Multi-award-winning musicianWinner of Album Of The Year 2020www.rachelwalkermason.comwww.lyricallight.co.ukwww.listenincolourartistmanagement.co.uk
16 www.writeawaymag.co.ukGod’s Eternal LoveGod’s Eternal LoveClare Steffen, Founding and Executive Director of Round The Globe came across the music of Francis Mikel Eloho on Facebook, and immediately reached out to him and suggested they co-write. Within a short time of reaching the lyrics constructed by Clare, Francis Mikel returned with a beautiful piano melody and vocal. There were obstacles to overcome because Francis Mikel, who lives in Nigeria, didn’t have the ability to go to a recording studio and he could only record through his phone. The melody he composed was very moving, and so together they worked to find a way to bring this song to production through the assistance of Raul Barba in Argentina. Raul, played the melody composed by Francis Mikel, and arranged it around the vocals that Francis recorded on his phone. Raul added backup vocals, and other instrumentation to enhance the recording, and in the end through a team effort, a beautiful, and uplifting song was composed.Clare Steffen is a Psychologist, University Professor, Published Author, Vocalist and Musician. She spent ten years early on in her career working as a music therapist offering music as a means to healing for the elderly, disabled, and veterans. After thirty years of working as a psychologist, in 2019, Clare returned to writing music. She started the Round The Globe Project that has allowed her to write songs with individuals in over 24 countries from around the world. To date, she has co-written 25 albums through this project. These songs are Indie, Jazz, Folk, Folk Rock, Christmas, and World songs and each one invites the listener to hear the message in the music.Always interested in culture, her songs will bring a fusion of sound that represents the richness of countries from around the world. Clare also has a close partnership with an individual in Nashville, TN and they have co-written six albums, and are currently working on a seventh album, that offer Country, Americana, Bluegrass, Celtic, Christmas, and Christian music.Clare Steffen writes songs that offer encouragement and healing. Clare has blended her musical and lyrical writing skills to focus on creating songs that address issues of social justice, relationship concerns, and the human experience.Dr. Steffen is a published author and enjoys bringing a multi-media approach to healing through print, sound, and visual effort.Francis Mikel Elobo is a Gospel and Jazz Singer-Songwriter and Choir Director from Nigeria. He is also a producer. He believes he is the reason God made grace. His piano styling is improvisational, and fluid. He presents his vocals in an authentic manner that warms the heart. He faith permeates through everything he composes. There is a gentleness in his voice that brings comfort to the listener. He recently joined in co-writing music with Clare Steffen in the Round The Globe project, and shares the vision of bringing hope and global healing through music. Francis Mikel possesses a rare gift in which music flows through him, as a way of communicating universal love. As gifted as Francis is, he remains humble and generatesgratitude to be included in the efforts of Round The Globe. He has a vision for music that allowshim to connect the lyrics to the song he composes,Raul Barba is a professional pianist and musical arranger from Argentina. He has over twenty years of composition and songwriting experience. Raul has the gift of composing melodies, and musical and vocal arrangements in multiple genres, including Pop, Gospel, Rock, Opera, Jazz, R & B, Soul, and Blues. He is a man of strong faith and beliefs, and shares the value of humility, and gratitude for the gifts God has bestowed upon him. He has the unique ability to read a lyricand communicate with it on a deep emotional level so that he is able to create a melody that frames the song in a perfect manner. Francis Mikel composed a beautiful melody and Raul wasable to take this song to another level through his arrangements and inclusion of backup vocals. The marriage of composition between Francis Mikel and Raul resulted in the inspiration melody, God’s Eternal Love Round The Globe (RTG), is a specialty music project started by Dr. Clare E Steffen, Ed.D, ND, CADCII, ICADC, CNP, CMH, BCC, NCC, BCHC. Mainly the piano. & more! A prodigy for sure. Today, she is an intrepid teacher, composer, singer & that-more, with a touching singing voice, a fine lyricist’s-word-skill, & she is a producer to be noted. Vivian is classically trained. My hero with her skill. As you will hear. But she can leap to and have fun-&-frolic with pop or contemporary pieces. 20 www.writeawaymag.co.ukThis month we will discuss how you can sucessfully improve your lyric writing skills by knowing how to use nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs within your lyric for maximum impact, thus using fewer words in your line of lyrics. Once you know what each is it allows you to write more powerful lyrics. I’ve included a few exercises that you might like to try to help improve your lyric writing skills.Noun: - a word that is the name of something (such as a person, animal, place, thing, quality, idea, or action) and is typically used in a sentence as subject or object of a verb or as object of a prepositionVerb:- a word (such as jump, think, happen, or exist) that is usually one of the main parts of a sentence and that expresses an plans.action, an occurrence, or a state of beingAdjective:- a word that describes a noun or a pronoun The words blue in “the blue car,” deep in “the water is deep,” and tired in “I’m very tired” are adjectives.Adverb:- a word that describes a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or a sentence and that is often used to show time, manner, place, or degree “arrived early,” “runs slowly,” “stayed home,” “works hard” The words “early,” “slowly,” “home,” and “hard” are adverbs. How To Know Which Verbs Need ReplacingYour first hint is your own discomfort with a sentence. Odds are it features a snooze-inducing verb. As you hone your self editing skills train yourself to exploit opportunities to replace a weak verb for a strong one. What constitutes a tired verb? Here’s what to look for:Three Types of Verbs to Beware of 1. State-of-being verbsThese are weak or passive as opposed to powerful:IsAmAreWasWereBeBeingBeenHaveHasHadDoDoesDidShall Will Should Would May Might Must CanCouldI’m not saying these should never appear in your lyric. But when a line lies limp, you can bet it contains at least one of these words. Determining when a state-of-being verb is the culprit creates a problem—and finding a better, more powerful verb to replace it—is what makes us better writers.Resist the urge to consult a thesaurus for the most exotic verb you can find. I consult such references only for the normal word that carries power but refuses to come to mind.Lame: The man was walking on the platform.Powerful: The man strode along the platform.Lame: Jim is a lover of country living.Powerful: Jim treasures country living.Lame: There are three things that make me feel the way I doPowerful: Three things convince me…2. Verbs that rely on adverbsPowerful verbs are strong enough to stand alone.ExamplesThe fox (ran quickly) dashed through the forest. She (menacingly looked) glared at her rival. He (secretly listened) eavesdropped while they discussed their 3. Verbs with ‘-ing’ suffixesExamplesBefore: He was walking…After: He walked…Before:: She was loving the idea of…After: She loved the idea of…Before: The family was starting to gather…After: The family started to gather…The Strong Verbs ListAbsorb Advance Advise Alter Amend Amplify Attack Balloon Bash Batter Beam Beef Blab Blast BoltBoostBriefBroadcastBroodBurst Bus Bust Capture Catch Charge Chap Chip Clasp Climb Clutch Collide Command Commune Cower Crackle Crash Crave Crush Dangle Dash Demolish Depart Deposit Detect Deviate Devour Direct Discern Discover Dismantle Download Drag Drain Drip Drop Eavesdrop Engage Engulf Enlarge Ensnare Envelop Erase Escort Expand Explode Explore Expose Extend Extract Eyeball Fight Fish Fling Fly Frown Fuse Garble Gaze Glare Gleam Glisten Glitter Gobble Govern Grasp Gravitate Grip Groan Grope Growl Guide Gush Hack Hail Heighten Hobble Hover Hurry Ignite Illuminate Inspect Instruct Intensify Intertwine Impart Jostle Journey Lash Launch Lead Leap Locate Lurch Lurk Magnify Mimic Mint Moan Modify Multiply Muse Mushroom Mystify Notice Notify Obtain Oppress Order Paint Park Peck Peek Peer Perceive Picture Pilot Pinpoint Place Plant Plop Pluck Plunge Poison Pop Position Power Prickle Probe Prune Realize Recite Recoil Refashion Refine Remove Report Retreat Reveal ReverberateRevitalizeRevolutionizeRevolveRip Rise Ruin Rush Rust Saunter Scamper Scan Scorch Scrape Scratch Scrawl Seize Serve Shatter Shepherd Shimmer Shine Shock Shrivel Sizzle Skip Skulk Slash Slide Slink Using nOUns, VERBs, ADJECTiVEs AnD ADVERBs TO EnH

Should you greet them? What do you say to someone whose heart you broke five years ago?• YOU’RE A CHILD WHO’S BEEN TOLD SANTA ISN’T REAL. Write about your feelings and how you might interact with younger kids who still believe.• YOU FIND A PECULIAR DEVICE IN YOUR POCKET AND HAVE NO IDEA HOW IT GOT THERE. You feel someone’s watching you. What do you do? Quite a challenging one, but have a go at writing as a lyric.• IN FEWER THAN 250 WORDS, DESCRIBE A DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE, then turn this into a song lyric.• WRITE ABOUT HOW YOUR CHARACTER’S BEST FRIEND’S BODY SHOWS UP IN FRONT OF THEIR HOUSE. What will they do to find out who’s responsible? 22 www.writeawaymag.co.ukI always wanted to write a song about my feelings for life. I went back to my earlier days and looked at the people that I met and those around us. I cannot avoid but noticed the imbalance of life itself. Why would there be people on one side where all the pleasures and bright things in life fly around. And of course, why do people on the other side continue to look for just even the basic things in life. Uncontrolled difference, can sighs and laughter create a harmony? Thus came ‘Enough Is Good’This is Rollie Navarro, an independent songwriter and writes for any music genre. Started as a lyricist in the ‘80s and started doing my own songs starting 2010. My passion in writing started when I was still in my grade school when I was trying to write stories which I thought can be for movies. Stories about sorcery, vampires and the likes. Kids’ stuff at that time. Pursued love for the arts and joined theater groups. Community theater and university theater in my college days. Joined PETA in early ‘80s. This is where I was introduced to music in the movies. Worked with Gardy Labad as lyricist for movies like Lola Basyang, Kumander Dante, Nude City and the latest being Magnifico theme song “Aking Munting Bituin” which got nominated in Awit Awards the same year. Also wrote the libretto for a musical dance adaptation of Filipino epic “Labaw Donggon” which was sponsored by a Filipino-Chinese community for their annual celebration.ROLLIE NAVARROIn 2019, I wrote the song for an Anti-Cybersex campaign for children’s protection “Pag-asa Ng Bayan” which was sung by various artist and cyber guardians. In 2020, my song was used in a video to promote Nissan Phils’ support to the frontliners. “Hibla Ng Alaala” which shares someone’s memories of a lost loved one. Nowadays, he would write pop, ambient, dance, R&B, commentary songs. Still, writing a contemporary musical would be in his wishlist.JM DE RAMOSI am glad that I got to produce this song. It’s an eye opener for the world, especially now days that weird things are becoming what they called “NORMAL” And it’s daunting to know that it is really happening from around the world. 22 www.writeawaymag.co.24k22 ww w .wr i t e awaym a g.co.uLove Will Save The WorldLove Will Save The World© M. Turner & T. Sappe 2020Mike Turner“Love Will Save the World” was one of the first songs we started work on after Taylor and I founded the label. Taylor had com-posed the musical portion, the flow of which almost immediately suggested the ‘love, love, love’ lyric to me, and we built out the lyric from there. To me, the central theme of the song is the reason behind why we had formed the label: the idea that ‘we the people’ have the power to end war if we come together with determination to do so. The spoken bridge, which to me is a callback to the classic “talking blues” style of folk song, drives this message home. I laid down a demo vocal track with the ‘high, low’ vocal arrangement, with the idea of the song being a male/female duet. Taylor shopped the song around to various artists signed to the label for quite a while, but we didn’t seem to hit on the right ‘voice’ until TaNayha recorded it, and she sounded terrific. The more we then listened to it, the more we began to think that my vocal demo could work as the ‘low’ track, and with Taylor’s work in the mixing room, voila, we had the finished track. Taylor SappeThis was one of those songs where the music was created first and the lyrics were added afterwards. Getting the initial music composed was the easy part, but as we got deeper into the production some complexities arose. At one point we decided to get a rapper to do the spoken word part, so I changed that part to sound like modern trap. Although I was in contact with several rappers it seemed that none of them wanted to record something that was written by anyone other than themselves.I changed the spoken word section back to match the style of the song and after we had recorded TaNayah’s vocal I suggested to Mike that we use his baritone voice to do something on the order of “Big Bad John” from the 60s for the spoken word section. It worked.TaNayhaI was inspired to record this song because it sends a powerful but simple message that if we will choose love instead of hate, peace instead of war we can save the world just by coming together and loving each other!! A truly amazing message and I also really loved it for the bluesy style , as it was a great fit for my voice and I was really excited to help with this project to get it out there and finally recorded for Mike and Taylor. 26 www.writeawaymag.co.ukk22 ww w .wr i t e awaym a g.co.uNakedNaked© David IrelandDavid Philip Ireland - The Naked Truth! I’ll begin with that old chestnut! I’m so often asked - How do you write? Music first or lyrics first?’ Well, of course, it varies from piece to piece. In the case of ‘Naked’, it was most definitely lyrics first. I write a great deal of poetry, sometimes free verse, but being a lyricist, I often write in a very structured verse/chorus/middle form too. That was the case with Naked. And Naked was there at the back of my mind for the longest time, battling to be born. I wanted to write a song that addressed the right to freedom of speech, transparency, the political climate we find ourselves in, the issue of fake news, a bit of social comment and so much more. I’m of an age where I really have heard a lot of it all before - but I find that the generations following on, are less inclined to speak out against injustices or almost anything controversial that might bring the ‘wrong’ kind of attention upon them. The day of the ‘protest’ song seems to be far behind us. Current artists are often too worried about conflict and image and repercussions. Being a relative unknown in the global music scene, I guess I still have the luxury of speaking my mind about certain issues without fear of losing sponsorship, or that lucrative multi-album deal hovering on the horizon. Having said that there are still some outspoken songs I have written recently that I have been advised to leave alone for the time being - well, we’ll see how that develops… So Naked grew out of the desire to at least say something that would allow me to speak my mind without having doors closed. The opening lines of the song set the tone for the whole peace. ‘Don’t tell me things you think I should hear. I’ve heard them all before…’ The outrageous political rhetoric we are bludgeoned with from everywhere in the world is nothing new, but these days we are force fed a continuous stream of propaganda, so confidently laid out that it becomes hard to distinguish the fake from the real. This is what drove me to write the song. All we want is truth. The pure honest naked truth. And that is the heart of my lyric. Whatever posturing any of us might be guilty of - underneath it all we’re naked… Initially I did not envisage recording and performing Naked myself. The descending chords drew out my Beatles influences from years back and my music seems to live in a different place these days. On playing the song at a number of Zoom sessions, Naked was a powerful song to sing with just my acoustic guitar and vocal and it began to grow on me. I think it was then that Taylor Sappe of Music For World Peace Records heard the track and expressed an interest in releasing my song. And so we worked out a way to put the track together. There we were, in different countries, in the middle of a pandemic and living in weird time zones with work patterns and schedules that took some clever co-ordinating. But gradually the track grew and we found ourselves with much more than a demo. Truly an international collaboration - I’m UK based, Taylor is in the US and Sullie (John O’Sullivan) is in Australia. Our recording methods have given the resultant release an ethereal quality, an other-worldliness, and most certainly a life of its own. Taylor’s sensitive production and Sullie’s fabulous guitar work have added a layer of power to the track that gives us a whole that is far more than the sum of its parts. I have included the lyrics here. Naked is a song I am immensely proud of. 32 www.writeawaymag.co.ukThe L&M Project Band Releases New AlbumThe L&M Project Bands New Album ( The adventures profound respect for screen writters and the people of Badass Jane) . It’s not just a music album, it is a full short story musical if you will. This album features 7 Scenes that take you through an amazing story of growin up. Marriage, love dedication, troublesRegret and even death in about 28 minutes with very strong vocals set to a Bluesy Rocken fun vibe. E.M.M by Inigo Mortell ar Banana Rising Studios Ph.The band, which hails from the Philippines has garnered international success in less than a year of being together. Founders Larry Gabbert and Mark Ervie de Jesus has led a group of amazing singers and artist from the Philippines to multi international awards for song of the year and earned them a covented nomination in the 6th annual Josie Music Awards. This new album project is by far their best work to date and they have high expectations on this one.Badass Jane was kind of a fluke we had just released our hit single Dont Judge Me and the follow up Single start.Tell the World and had no future songs in the works. But, it was a comment on FB just after our release on Bongoboy Records Concecration Revival II by various blues singers in the Philippines and has great respect artist that sparked what would become a 5 month long from all his peers with over 20 years of performing true adventure. “ The comment ( this album is fit for a Rock Opra) well it just hit me . I thought how cool it would be to write a rock play. Unknown to me the amount of work it that laid ahead. So I spent about a month seeking advise from peers in around brings his Harmonic playing talent to this the music industry and searchin for a possible screen play to use as a foundation to the project with no luck. rookie when it comes to music and is an amazing I have to admit I was alittle discouraged and thought “ singer songwriter in her own right. Mark Ervie de What the heck am I trying to do”. I have never written a screen play or even attempted to do such a project musically. After a couple more weeks, I was watchin Netflix and one of the Marvel Movies when, it hit me clear as day. So I spent a few days writting a story about a girl named Jane and her life growing up . But I wanted to create an ultra ego that actually did more harm than good. So after writting and re-writing and re-writing I had about 14 pages and a workable foundatiin for the story. Then I had to tackle the issue of putting the story to music and writting the songs. I will tell you I have a who write musicals and plays. Its hard enough even if you know what your doing and I certainly did not haha. The songs came to me relatively quick but I always had to keep aware of the story and what I was trying to convey to the audience. Each scene had to be a part of the previous scene and lead into the next part of the story.I wanted the story to be based on real places that people could relate to and it took me another couple weeks doing reseach on States, Cities Local businesses that people could actually visit and feel like they are part of the story.. I finally reached the point to share the ideas and scenes with Mark and it went from there. We started recording first week of october and was able to complete the album end of November. Overall we are very pleased with the end result even when we had no idea about what we were doing in the The album features Ado Bantula one of the best rock and vocal experience. Darlene Ordanza a multi award winning vocalist in the Philippines, brings a wealth of experience from several years as a performing artist and wedding singer. Michael Odoño with several years experience as one of the best Blues vocalist album. Grace Collamat on Keyboards, Grace is no Jesus founding member brings to the table 25 plus years as a guitarist/ bassist for several pinoy bands throught the years. His playing and ability to adapt to any style of music makes him the perfect fit for the band and co-founder, Drummer Larry GabbertThe album is scheduled for release on January 15th 2022. 36 www.writeawaymag.co.ukAnd for valentine’s day we have a song about love. No less! Go figure! Whaddya know! ‘N all that romantic stuff. Of dreams. Realities. Functions-of-Cupid. And all That-More-Stuff-Too! THE BACKGROUND I wrote this song, well thunk-it-up one time, thinking, which I try to do once a year at least. Think the lovers can reunite. Unite, even for the first time. that is! Anyway, I was thinking-reminiscing-doing-that-thinkin’-thing about loves & lovers, and how it must be difficult when they are apart at special occasions like Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Days-or-Daze, or just becuzzes & more. Red hearts bleeding Into-&-For each other, at those times for sure. Even now, the way the world has been the last few, couple-not-as-in-coupling, years. Lovers far apart. Unable to access each other Live. Like across a sea. Away from each other. Metaphorically or in reality. Something separating them from their time together. In the moment. Of. HEARTFELT. SOMETHINGS. So the song LOVE-LOVE-LOVE emerged then, once. Thinking this-&-that, from my fingertips way-back-then-&-when-then-too & in me-one-cell-brain-wee-mind, as you HEAR it HERE. In the lyrics. In the tune. ON You Tube. The doing. Of-Of-Of the song. Dear Lovers being far away from each other, in that metaphor-like-moment, or in the reality-reel-of-their-lives. You know how I love metaphors. Mixed or not! IN life. Symbols. And cymbals. Real. Clanged. Mixed. Clunky. Not connecting (as the lovers want to). Or a combination of. The clunky cymbals. That is! THE SEA, THE ‘SEE’ or ‘SEEING’ in the song, to blend sounds to mean more… in the song of course & life too, can represent THAT ABYSS, ANY ABYSS, between lovers. Be it magical. Real. A moment-of- thought separating them. The magic in hearts-n-words gone awry. Sometimes. Or finding a way back to each other. Somehow. Across that abyss of time-&-space. The lovers that is. Making sense. Finally. Their own sense. The way they want to be. Sing-a-long ooops ‘SING ALONG!’ if YOU LIKE! ! In the Music of Now! Coming together across that sea, moving my way. Her way. To each other. Here are the lyrics in all their simplicity, from, yes, my one-cell-brain, celebrating the loneliness-of-heart & soon-to-be happiness of the joining-kind. When Their Love-Hearts-Of-The-Joining-Kind. ABOUT ME… FRANK! aka GRAMPA FRANK! Writing professionally since 1975. Sing, play… instruments. Write songs. Love my grandkids. Love nature. Hike. Think. Enjoy… this life thing we are on! Do yoga. Write. Sometimes do karate… but my way now. Read. Perform. Smile. Visit: www.FrankWestcottPoet.com OH! And my latest live interview. 42 www.writeawaymag.co.ukDon’t Fade Don’t Fade © Richie MarekI am 52 years old. My childhood was a nightmare, from a father who beat me constantly, a mother who left me when I was six. I was repeatedly raped by the things that hurt me. I desperately want to share a pedophile for three years, eight till eleven years old. my music but also my story to help others know they At age eighteen, I became homeless and lived on the streets till I was forty years old. During those years I was in and out of hospitals from being attacked on the streets, beat within an inch of my life too many times to count. In my twenties and thirties I had attempted suicide a number of time. I was in such emotional distress and could live. Well, we both made it and it was then that was just done living in pain. In my forties, I started getting help for my mental disabilities. I finally had a home and a little bit of security, and found I had a passion for music. As I started teaching myself how to play piano and guitar, I found I had a knack for writing my own music. It became my voice, a way of getting out all the hurt I carried. I know that many musicians/ artists have gone through similar things in their lives and thanks to the I have an audition on the 22cd of this month with internet, we have more help than ever to overcome the things that hurt us the most. Music is not only something I’m passionate about, it is also kind of a lifeline. It helps bring out something beautiful from are not alone, and it’s okay to reach for our dreams. In my forties I also became a dad. Her name is Autumn and is everything to me. She is autistic, she was born three months premie and wasn’t expected to make it. I had trouble with faith, because of all i went through, but I asked God to take me, so that she I made peace with Him.My life is good today, but at times I feel a bit down that I lost so much time, and now I’m an old guy trying to make my dreams come true. It’s challenging because it’s a younger generation making things happen. Still, I believe in my music, I’m just not sure how to get it out there.America’s got Talent, and I’m hoping it helps. There’s always a chance as long as I keep trying!

44 www.writeawaymag.co.ukJOANIELEEDSUp To Life’s EdgeSteve BoltonI always compose my tunes with my acoustic guitar, but first I always create a poem which I usually tweak into song lyrics. Before I create my tune I always consider which signature key, I should write the track in and use the necessary chords that correspond the chosen key. I always like to create both intro and outro solo’s for the track, which I mainly create through using pentatonic scales that correspond to the relevant signature key.Regarding the subject of my self created material it’s often taken from something, which makes a major impact on me either from current affairs or certain films. This enables me to put feeling into the song. For instance on social media I have a track titled, For Eternity it Rages!, the idea came to me when I was watching a TV documentary about the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster. Another track of mine titled, Up to Life’s Edge! materialised in my mind, after I’d watched the feature film Everest. Also I’d done some internet research on the subject and furthered my knowlege regarding The Goddess, which of course the major peak is nick named. Another of my tracks I titled Faded God and I thought that one out, when I’d reached the end of my 50’s and when my oldest friend tragically passed away very suddenly. I immediately began to feel rather middle The Goddess, which is of course what aged and the first time I went out on the town without my oldest friend, I thought do people, mainly younger ones now view me as a former icon who’s now faded? hence the title Faded God. Also I found a line that I could dedicate to my oldest friend, describing him as passed on to a much better place. The end product that goes onto social media is always created by a very talented music producer, named Neil Rigg. He always advises me regarding if a solo should be either omitted ,or included and has great ideas regarding which backing instruments should be included. Neil has even managed to get professional musicians involved in the mix too, also professional backing singers. its a wonderful feeling that the end product, which goes out onto social media is a combination of both our ideas. I feel my material’s getting known and quite well listened to too, for instance I now have 15,546 streams been achieved via Spotify. My inspiration actually came from watching the movie Everest and after seeing the film I was inspired enough to undertake further information research on the subject. This gave me the recurrent line don’t go to war with the worlds highest peak is nick named. The ideas materialised from various harrowing scenes I saw during the film. For instance many mountaineers were scaling vertical walls of ice with crampons, pitons and ice axes, this lead to a line which goes fate’s decided by good or evil, whilst scaling these walls of ice! Before climbing the main peak, which is named the Death Zone all mountaineers must strictly achieve successfully conquering all four base camp levels. On the morning of the Death Zone ascent the climbers have to set off at 4am, before the sun rises. Hence the opening line, dark gloom leaving Base Camp total mystery what’s in store? This of course was a main scene from the film and also another scene that inspired me was a mountaineer lying on a camp bed at Base Camp Level 4. He had his eyes covered by a dark mask and he said to well wishers that he was snow blind! Of course I realised that this would be a major hazard whilst making either the ascent or descent and a victim would certainly meet their doom!A harrowing scene in the film which I couldn’t find a place for was the main featured team falling victim to a severe snow thunder storm, which threatened to incinerate them, sadly I couldn’t include lightning incineration. Of course every mountaineer will have the dire knowlege that there’ll be many preserved bodies under the hard packed and sculptured snow and ice. This lead to me finding the line, going up to life’s edge forget those bodies under sculptured snow. I think every mountaineer scaling the Death Zone would have to push this frightning thought to the back of their minds and remain 100% positive.Regarding reaching the Death Zone’s crest a mountaineer is regarded to be standing on top of the world and this achievement gave me the line, wanna revel in standing on top of the world, this is what you’d be literally doing as it is the highest point on Planet Earth. Also I strongly imagine that mountaineers would wonder if the mysterious Goddess was on their side, or not. Hence once again the recurrent line in the song, don’t go to war with the Goddess. Generally all these thoughts contributed to me creating the lyrics for this track and then of course followed the tune.
www.writeawaymag.co.uk 45UP TO LIFE’S EDGEC Steve Bolton Dark gloom leaving base camp, total mystery what’s in store? Climbing the Death Zone, is this a one man war? Going up to life’s Edge, gotta feel that crazy rush. Fate’s demons await, don’t go to war with the Goddess she won’t beat about the bush! Fate’s decided by good or evil, whilst scaling these walls of ice. Climbing the Death Zone, well I never thought twice! Going up to life’s edge,Forget those bodies under sculptured snow. Fate’s demons await, don’t go to war with the Goddessshe sure won’t wanna know! Wanna revel in standing on top of the world, conquer Hillary’s Step alas Death Zone’s a sub zero treck. 46 www.writeawaymag.co.ukMorning Light© Heerraa/Autumn HeleneAcross two continents, singer-songwriters Autumn Helene and Heerraa came together to co-created a heartwarming original song, Morning Light, which shares how there is always light at the end of the tunnel and with each new day, things will get better. Despite having never met each other physically and the 15-hour time difference between, Heerraa and Autumn Helene worked together virtually over the span of weeks to put the song together. The two songstresses wrote the lyrics together over one songwriting session, as they poured their hearts into the music, opening up to each other about the things they were undergoing and putting words to their feelings and experiences. The song’s theme, Heerraa explained, “is about growth and embracing who you are. The central message of the song is about how life is a blessing, despite the challenges you might experience.” Helene added,“and the song reminds you how every day is a new opportunity for you to live your best life.” Thus, Morning Light was born. Together, Autumn Helene and Heerraa premiered the official music video for their song at the Morning Light Virtual Launch party, even ending the launch with a special live performance of Morning Light. Morning Light recently won “Best Pop Song” and “Best Collaboration” at The Indie Songwriting Awards - Fall 2021 (USA). Heerraa is an international singer-songwriter and performer who is changing the world with music, featured on Hitz fm Malaysia, Ahenfo Radio Denmark, Mark Skin Radio USA, Indie Rampage Radio USA, RTM TV 2 Malaysia, Super Sound Scotland, The Casey Beat Australia, Utusan Malaysia and more. She’s received the Audience Choice Award 2017 & Festival Director’s Award 2019 (Short+Sweet Song Malaysia), is a semifinalist of Anugerah Lagu Indie 2021, nominated for Malaysian Digital Film Awards (Best Digital Music Video 2019), more.Featured on Simulacra 2’s Original Game Soundtrack with her song “The Girl Who Loved”, Heerraa has received worldwide recognition in Germany, UK, Polland & US. 50 50 www.writeawaymag.co.uk ww w .wr i t e awaym a g.co.ukForever© James ThompsonI wrote the song about a college love affair , I had met this girl the first week of college and we dated throughout the four years. Sadly we parted ways at the end. Some 40 years later and were friends on Facebook! I started writing songs after retirement at age 64! I’ve written 20 songs far.I got into songwriting a couple years ago when I retired and had more time. I had picked up a better guitar and was playing from songbooks of my favorites like Jimmy Buffett, Jim Croce , Neil Young, Jackson Browne, Bob Marley, eagles and CSN. One day I decided to write some songs. I heard that country songs were just three chords and the truth, so I began to write from my experiences….I have written 20 songs during the last two years… country, pop, rock, Christian and even a reggae style song. I believe my best songs are yet to come !!
