www.countrymusicexpress.co.uk| 04It’s no doubt that we have a very special edition of Country Music Express this month. The main reason being our cover story, the celebration of Loretta Lynn’s 90th birthday. Yes, the Country Legend is 90 years young and still looking amazing. All of us here wish Loretta the very best wishes and may there be many more to come. Also on the cover this month is songwriter, entrepreneur and inventor, Jim Thompson. Jane also has a great tribute on the legendary Bill Munroe and also the Bakersville sound.I have had a good month with ‘Stars and their Guitars’ featuring one of my influences and favourite guitarists, the very excellent Ry Cooder. Ok, I hear you all saying “He’s not strictly Country”, well, he’s not strictly blues either. I kind of see him as someone who sits in the middle playing blues slide in a country, or even a western style. But it’s his wacky guitars that really interest me, the machine that give that distinctive tremelo infused relaxed sound. Believe it or not, it’s only when I wrote this piece that I learnt that his stratocaster had a bigsby tremelo system. That probably doesn’t mean too much to non playing folk but to us string-heads, we gasp in disbelief. Anyway enough about that. Also in this months issue, Jane continues her ‘Tools of the Trade’ with a great feature on the Dobro guitar. There is a ‘Spotlight on Casey Donahue and features on Bob Stetson, Mark Taylor, Cosmic American, Andrea Vasquez and plenty more including all of our regular features. So let’s celebrate with this issue but we also ask you to give a moments thought for those suffering in Ukraine and those forced to become refugees by this terrible war currently being raged. Take care all and keep safe until next month. www.countrymusicexpress.co.uk| 10William Smith Monroe; September 13 1911, – September 9, 1996) was an American mandolinist, singer, and songwriter, who created the bluegrass music genre. Because of this, he is often called the “Father of Bluegrass”.The genre takes its name from his band, the Blue Grass Boys, who named their group for the bluegrass of Monroe’s home state of Kentucky. Monroe’s performing career spanned 69 years as a singer, instrumentalist, composer and bandleader.Monroe was born on his family’s farm near Rosine, Kentucky, United States, the youngest of eight children of James Buchanan “Buck” and Malissa (Vandiver) Monroe. His mother and her brother, Pendleton “Pen” Vandiver, were both musically talented, and Monroe and his family grew up playing and singing at home. Bill was of Scottish and English heritage. Because his older brothers Birch and Charlie already played the fiddle and guitar, Bill was resigned to playing the less desirable mandolin. He recalled that his brothers insisted that he remove four of the mandolin’s eight strings so he would not play too loudly.Monroe’s mother died when he was ten, and his father died six years later. By and by his brothers and sisters moved away, leaving Monroe to bounce between uncles and aunts until finally settling in with his disabled uncle Pendleton Vandiver, whom he often accompanied when Vandiver played the fiddle at dances. This experience inspired one of Monroe’s most famous compositions, “Uncle Pen”, recorded in 1950, and the 1972 album Bill Monroe’s Uncle Pen. On that album, Monroe recorded a number of traditional fiddle tunes he had often heard performed by Vandiver. Vandiver has been credited with giving Monroe “a repertoire of tunes that sank into Bill’s aurally trained memory and a sense of rhythm that seeped into his bones.” Also significant in Monroe’s musical life was Arnold Shultz, an influential fiddler and guitarist who introduced Monroe to the blues. In 1929, Monroe moved to Indiana to work at an oil refinery with his brothers Birch and Charlie, and childhood friend and guitarist William “Old Hickory” Hardin. Together with a friend Larry Moore, they formed the “Monroe Brothers”, to play at local dances and house parties.Birch and Moore soon left the group, and Bill and Charlie carried on as a duo, eventually winning spots performing live on radio stations, first in Indiana and then, sponsored by Texas Crystals, on several radio broadcasts in Shenandoah, Iowa, Nebraska, South Carolina and North Carolina from 1934 to 1936. RCA Victor signed the Monroe Brothers to a recording contract in 1936. They scored an immediate hit single with the gospel song “What Would You Give in Exchange For Your Soul?” and ultimately recorded 60 tracks for Victor’s Bluebird label between 1936 and 1938.After the Monroe Brothers disbanded in 1938, Bill Monroe formed The Kentuckians in Little Rock, Arkansas, but the group only lasted for three months. Monroe then left Little Rock for Atlanta, Georgia, to form the first edition of the Blue Grass Boys, with singer/guitarist Cleo Davis, fiddler Art Wooten, and bassist Amos Garren. Bill had wanted William Hardin to become one of the original members of his Blue Grass Boys, however he had to decline. In October 1939, Monroe successfully auditioned for a regular spot on the Grand Ole Opry, impressing Opry founder George D. Hay with his energetic performance of Jimmie Rodgers’s “Mule Skinner Blues”. Monroe recorded that song, along with seven others, at his first solo recording session for RCA Victor in 1940; by this time, the Blue Grass Boys consisted of singer/guitarist Clyde Moody, fiddler Tommy Magness, and bassist Bill Wesbrooks. While the fast tempos and instrumental virtuosity characteristic of bluegrass music are apparent even on these early tracks, Monroe was still experimenting with the sound of his group. He seldom sang lead vocals on his Victor recordings, often preferring to contribute high tenor harmonies as he had in the Monroe Brothers. A 1945 session for Columbia Records featured an accordion, soon dropped from the band. Most importantly, Monroe added banjo player David “Stringbean” Akeman to the Blue Grass Boys in 1942. Akeman played the instrument in a relatively primitive style and was rarely featured in instrumental solos. Monroe’s pre-1946 recordings represent a transitional style between the string-band tradition from which he came and the musical innovation to follow.Key developments occurred in Monroe’s music with the addition of Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs to the Blue Grass Boys in December 1945. Flatt played a solid rhythm guitar style that would help to set the course for bluegrass timing. Scruggs played the banjo with a distinctive three-finger picking style that immediately caused a sensation among Opry audiences. Flatt and Scruggs joined a highly accomplished group that included fiddler Howdy Forrester and bassist Joe Forrester and would soon include fiddler Chubby Wise and bassist Howard Watts, who often performed under the name “Cedric Rainwater”. In retrospect, this line-up of the Blue Grass Boys has been dubbed the “Original Bluegrass Band”, as the music finally included all the elements that characterize bluegrass music, including breakneck tempos, sophisticated vocal harmony Country Music LegendCountry Music LegendBill MonroeBill Monroe

By this time, Monroe had acquired the 1923 Gibson F5 model “Lloyd Loar” mandolin, which became his Hide”. Carter Stanley joined the Blue Grass Boys as guitarist trademark instrument for the remainder of his career. The 28 songs recorded by this version of the Blue Grass Boys for Columbia Records in 1946 and 1947 soon became classics of the genre, including “Toy Heart”, “Blue Grass Breakdown Molly and Tenbrooks”, “”, “Wicked Path of Sin My Rose of Old Kentucky”, “”, “Little Cabin Home on the Hill”, and Monroe’s most famous song “Blue Moon of Kentucky”. The last-named was recorded by Elvis Presley in 1954, appearing as the B-side of his first single for Sun Records. Monroe gave his blessing to Presley’s rock and roll cover of the song, originally a slow ballad in waltz time, and re-recorded it himself with a faster arrangement after Presley’s version became a hit.Several gospel-themed numbers are credited to the “Blue Grass Quartet”, which featured four-part vocal arrangements accompanied solely by mandolin and guitar – Monroe’s usual practice when performing “sacred” songs. Both Flatt and Scruggs left Monroe’s band in early 1948, soon forming their own group, the Foggy Mountain Boys. In 1949, after signing with Decca Records, Monroe entered what has been called the “golden age” of his career with what many consider the classic “high lonesome” version of the Blue Grass Boys, featuring the lead vocals and rhythm guitar of Jimmy Martin, the banjo of Rudy Lyle (replacing Don Reno), and fiddlers such as Merle “Red” Taylor, Charlie Cline, Bobby Hicks, William Hicks and Vassar Clements. This band recorded a number of bluegrass classics, including “My Little Georgia Rose”, “On and On”, “Memories of Mother and Dad”, and “Uncle Pen”, as well as instrumentals such as “Roanoke”, “Big Mon”, “Stoney Lonesome”, “Get Up John”, and the mandolin feature “Raw for a short time in 1951 during a period when The Stanley Brothers had temporarily disbanded. On January 16, 1953, Monroe was critically injured in a two-car wreck. He and “Bluegrass Boys” bass player, Bessie Lee Mauldin, were returning home from a fox hunt north of Nashville. On highway 31-W, near White House, their car was struck by a drunken driver. Monroe, who had suffered injuries to his back, left arm and nose, was rushed to General Hospital in Nashville. It took him almost four months to recover and resume touring. In the meantime Charlie Cline and Jimmy Martin kept the band together.By the late 1950s, however, Monroe’s commercial fortunes had begun to slip. The rise of rock-and-roll and the development of the “Nashville sound” in mainstream country music both represented threats to the viability of bluegrass. While still a mainstay on the Grand Ole Opry, Monroe found diminishing success on the singles charts, and struggled to keep his band together in the face of declining demand for live performances.Monroe’s fortunes began to improve during the American folk music revival of the early 1960s. Many college students and other young people were beginning to discover Monroe, associating his style more with traditional folk music than with the country-and-western genre with which it had previously been identified. The word “bluegrass” first appeared around this time to describe the sound of Monroe and similar artists such as Flatt and Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers, Reno and Smiley, Jim and Jesse, and the Osborne Brothers. While Flatt and Scruggs immediately recognized the potential for a lucrative new audience in cities and on college campuses in the North, Monroe was slower to respond. Under the influence of Ralph Rinzler, a young musician and folklorist from New Jersey who briefly became Monroe’s manager in 1963, Monroe gradually expanded his geographic reach beyond the traditional southern country music circuit. Rinzler was also responsible for a lengthy profile and interview in the influential folk music magazine Sing Out! that first publicly referred to Monroe as the “father” of bluegrass. Accordingly, at the first bluegrass festival organized by Carlton Haney at Roanoke, Virginia in 1965, Bill Monroe was the central figure. In 1964, before the Grateful Dead got together, Jerry Garcia caravanned across the country from California to tag along with Monroe. The growing national popularity of Monroe’s music during the 1960s was also apparent in the increasingly diverse background of musicians recruited into his band. Non-southerners who served as Blue Grass Boys during this

Bluegrass festivals became common, with fans often traveling long distances to see a number of different acts over several days of performances. In 1967, Monroe himself founded an annual bluegrass festival at Bean Blossom in southern Indiana, a park he had purchased in 1951, which routinely attracted a crowd of thousands; a double LP from the festival featuring Monroe, Jimmy Martin, Lester Flatt, and Jim and Jesse was released in 1973. The annual Bill Monroe Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival is now the world’s oldest continuously running annual bluegrass festival.Monroe’s compositions during his later period were largely instrumentals, including “Jerusalem Ridge”, “Old Dangerfield” (originally spelled Daingerfield after the town in East Texas), and “My Last Days on Earth”; he settled into a new role as a musical patriarch who continued to influence younger generations of musicians. Monroe recorded two albums of duets in the 1980s; the first featured collaborations with country stars such as Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, and The Oak Ridge Boys, while the second paired him with other prominent bluegrass musicians. A 1989 live album celebrated his 50th year on the Grand Ole Opry. Monroe also kept a hectic touring schedule. On April 7, 1990, Monroe performed for Farm Aid IV in Indianapolis, Indiana along with Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and with many other artists.Monroe’s last performance occurred on March 15, 1996. He ended his touring and playing career in April, following a stroke. Monroe died on September 9, 1996, in Springfield, Tennessee, four days before his 85th birthday.Bill Monroe was made an honorary Kentucky Colonel in 1966. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as an “early influence”) in 1997. Jimmie Rodgers, Bob Wills, Hank Williams Sr., and Johnny Cash are the only other performers honored in all three. As the “father of bluegrass”, he was also an inaugural inductee into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor in 1991. Monroe was a recipient of a 1982 National Heritage Fellowship awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts, which is the United States government’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts. That year’s fellowships were the first bestowed by the NEA. In 1993, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and he was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1995. His well-known song “Blue Moon of Kentucky” has been covered not only by bluegrass but also rock and country artists, most notably Elvis Presley, Paul McCartney, and Patsy Cline. In 2003, CMT had Bill Monroe ranked No. 16 on CMT 40 Greatest Men of Country Music.Artists that claimed to be influenced by or to be playing the bluegrass genre were often bullied by Bill Monroe. He always considered himself the father and caretaker of bluegrass. He would often say of new bands that did not perform to his standards, “That ain’t no part of nothin’.” Even those who question the scope of bluegrass refer to Monroe as a “musical giant” and recognize that “there would be no bluegrass without Bill Monroe.”More than 150 musicians played in the Blue Grass Boys over the nearly 60 years of Monroe’s performing career. Monroe tended to recruit promising young musicians who served an apprenticeship with him before becoming accomplished artists in their own right. Some of Monroe’s band members who went on to greater prominence include singer/guitarists Clyde Moody, Lester Flatt, Jack Cook, Mac Wiseman, Jimmy Martin, Carter Stanley, Del McCoury, Peter Rowan, Roland White, Roland Dunn and Doug Green; banjo players Earl Scruggs, Buck Trent, Don Reno, Stringbean, Sonny Osborne, and Bill Keith; and fiddlers Tommy Magness, Chubby Wise, Vassar Clements, Byron Berline, Kenny Baker, Bobby Hicks, Gordon Terry, Randall Franks and Glen Duncan. Monroe also regularly performed with flat-picking guitar virtuoso Doc Watson.Modern bluegrass singer and mandolin player Ricky Skaggs was influenced by Monroe. Skaggs was only six years old, in 1960, when he first got to perform on stage with Monroe and his band at the high school in Martha, Kentucky. He stated, “I think Bill Monroe’s importance to American music is as important as someone like Robert Johnson was to blues, or Louis Armstrong. He was so influential: I think he’s probably the only musician that had a whole style of music named after his band.”In 1999, the portion of Indiana State Road 135 running from Morgantown through to Nashville, Indiana was dedicated to Bill Monroe and is known as the Bill Monroe Memorial Highway.Country Music LegendCountry Music LegendBill MonroeBill Monroe

Bakersfield was the first subgenre of country music significantly influenced by rock and roll, relying heavily on electric instrumentation and a strongly defined backbeat It was also a reaction against the slickly produced, orchestra-laden Nashville sound, which was becoming popular in the late 1950s. The Bakersfield sound became one of the most popular and influential country genres of the 1960s, initiating a revival of honky-tonk music and influencing later country rock and outlaw country musicians.Wynn Stewart pioneered the Bakersfield sound, while performing artists Buck Owens and Merle Haggard became two of the most successful artists of the original Bakersfield era while performing with The Buckaroos and The Strangers respectively. Other major Bakersfield country artists include Jean Shepard and Susan Raye. The Bakersfield sound was developed at honky-tonk bars such as The Blackboard, and on local television stations in Bakersfield and throughout California in the 1950s and 1960s. The town, known mainly for agriculture and oil production, was the destination for many Dust Bowl migrants and others from Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and parts of the Midwest. The mass migration of “Okies” to California also meant their music would follow and thrive, finding an audience in California’s Central Valley.Bakersfield country was a reaction to the slickly produced, string orchestra-laden Nashville sound, which was becoming popular in the late 1950s. One of the first groups to make it big on the West Coast was the Maddox Brothers and Rose, who were the first to wear outlandish costumes and make a “show” out of their performances. Artists such as Wynn Stewart used electric instruments and added a backbeat, as well as other stylistic elements borrowed from rock and roll. Important influences were Depression-era country music superstar Jimmie Rodgers, early 1950s honky tonk singer Lefty Frizzell, and 1940s Western swing musician Bob Wills. In 1954, MGM recording artist Bud Hobbs recorded “Louisiana Swing” with Buck Owens on lead guitar, Bill Woods on piano, and the dual fiddles of Oscar Whittington and Jelly Sanders. “Louisiana Swing” was the first song recorded in the style known today as the “Bakersfield sound”. In the early 1960s, Merle Haggard and Buck Owens and the Buckaroos, among others, brought the Bakersfield sound to

Jean Shepard, one of country music’s first significant female artists, began her recording career on the West Coast in the 1950s. its history. In 1996, Owens opened Buck Owens Through Capitol Records, Shepard’s “A Dear John Letter”, was the first major country hit single to use entirely Bakersfield musicians. Many of her early recording sessions featured prominent members of the Bakersfield movement, including Lewis Talley and Speedy West. Susan Raye was also a major figure 2006.in the Bakersfield sound, particularly in the 1970s, with hits such as “L.A. International Airport”. She was also a member of Buck Owens’ road show and recorded several hit duets with him. Other women to emerge from the West Coast country movement include Bonnie Owens, Kay Adams, and Rosie Flores. Two important British Invasion-era rock bands displayed some Bakersfield influences. The Beatles recorded a popular version of Owens’ “Act Naturally”. Years later, the Rolling Stones made their connection explicit in the lyrics of the very Bakersfield-sounding “Far Away Eyes”, which begins: “I was driving home early Sunday morning, through Bakersfield”.The Bakersfield sound has such a large influence on the West Coast music scene that many small guitar companies set up shop in Bakersfield in the 1960s. The most significant[citation needed was the Mosrite guitar company that still influences rock, country, and jazz music to this day. The famed Mosrite company was located in Bakersfield until the death of the company’s founder, Oildale resident Semie Moseley, in 1992.Buck Owens and the Buckaroos developed it further, incorporating different styles of music to fit Owens’ musical tastes. The music style features a raw set of twin Fender Telecasters with a picking style (as opposed to strumming), a big drum beat, and fiddle, with an occasional “in your face” pedal steel guitar. The Fender Telecaster was originally developed for country musicians to fit in with the Texas/Western swing style of music that was popular in the Western US following World War II. The music, like Owens, was rebellious for its time and is dependent on a musician’s individual talents, as opposed to the elaborate orchestral production common with Nashville-style country music.Buck Owens not only aided in the development of the Bakersfield sound, he also helped preserve Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, which served as both a nightclub for country music performers and as a museum of the history and sound of country music, including the Bakersfield sound. Owens regularly performed at the Crystal Palace until his death in In an interview, Dwight Yoakam defined the term “Bakersfield sound”:

I’ve got a poster of Buck Owens performing at the Fillmore West in 1968 in Haight-Ashbury! What went on there led to there being a musical incarnation called country rock. I don’t know if there would have been a John Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival had there not been the California country music that’s come to be known as the ‘Bakersfield sound’.The magazines No Depression and Blue Suede News regularly feature Bakersfield sound enthusiasts, while Corp. www.countrymusicexpress.co.uk| 20jim thompsonSongwriter, Entrepreneur, InventorI was born in a steel mill town (Coatesville) in South East Pennsylvania. Four generations of my family held employment at the Mill going back to the early 1800’s. I spent one summer grinding steel plates during college. Recently we located family historical information from the 1800’s that recorded large family gatherings where individuals would share personal poems and writings, which may explain my desire to write songs. Through a DNA site I have located a first cousin and found that she is a great writer of poetry and art creator. Growing up outside of Philadelphia I was exposed to a variety of music on the radio - from Philly soul to rock and roll. Summers were spent along the coast of the Chesapeake Bay in a working - class hamlet of cottages. I loved the doo wop songs of this era and wrote a doo wop song last year- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoSAHJa2-EwAt night I would sneak out to hear acoustic guitars and banjos playing on the neighbor’s front porch. My first introduction to live folk and country music. In the 1960’s the Vietnam war devastated the country - my sister’s fiancé was killed at 21 in 1969 and I. wrote the song Vietnam to honor him and our veterans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9REmJwSnL08I attended Bloomsburg University in the North East mountains of Pennsylvania. I lived at a fraternity house that resembled the one in the movie - Animal House! Many of the members were gifted with musical talent, I enjoyed walking the halls to hear live music from various rooms. We had a drummer, guitar pickers, bass players and at least six who played regularly in local bands. At the time I did not play or sing. Country rock was a local favorite genre with groups Poco and Eagles most prominent. I was drawn towards more obscure singer songwriters played on Philly rock station WMMR. In December of 1972 I returned home forChristmas, a friend called to invite me to a Christmas party at a farmhouse whe re she was babysitting. She said this guy called Jim can really play guitar and sing ... I declined - the man was Jim Croce! I wrote this song as a tribute.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QkUics2FdcAfter college I spent 20 years in hospital management directing support departments including a total of 7 years in Saudi Arabia. My first tour was in 1983 at a military facility - I was astonished to find there was no TV or radio! Fortunately, there were bootleg cassette stores selling home made music from around the world. I took up reading a book a week and continued that habit to present day. I believe reading has helped my songwriting. I returned at the start of the first Gulf war and aside from the falling scud missiles, we did have armed forces radio that played current songs. In the 1990’s I began to listen to New Age and Modern Jazz music - I wrote a jazz style song called ”In a while” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCxbUeE0KdoI wrote a song called ”Maybe” as a salute to rock songs from that era - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYtXzra_AH8In 2000 I left healthcare to open a franchise restaurant called Tropical Smoothie Café - the first one in South Florida! I went on to become an area developer and open 25 stores. I created over a dozen national menu items and the slogan - ‘Eat Better - Feel Better’! I received awards as the top franchisee and developer in the company. My recipes brought hundreds of millions of dollars to the company. In late 2014 I was pushed/bought out and began flipping houses! After a few years and 20 houses later, the market dried up. I had free time and purchased a good Taylor guitar.I was fortunate to find a great recording studio near me called Raincat Recording Studio owned by two young musicians - Bryon Lamar and Jeff Coulter https://www.raincatrecordings.com They helped complete my songs by adding percussion, bass and electric guitars-They have been touring musicians with record deals. They have great contacts to add fiddle, sax and vocals!I have 20 songs with videos now on YouTube! My newest song is called “I don’t know - America!” It’s a commentary on how the USA has fallen during the last two years... a Nashville recording artist called it a mix of Johnny Cash meets Tom Petty! In addition to songwriting, I am awaiting patent approval for a safety device to assist people during tornadoes! ‘Forever’ Postcard’ I was callin’ Bless our way’ Don’t be , ‘, ‘, ‘ ‘unkind - All are songs worthy of a listenhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qo6GeLbAJAQ&feature=youtu.behttps://www.youtube.com/channelUCxQ8kZrBE0cBgyLZCywJ5vwhttps://www.facebook.com/jim.thompson.14418

www.countrymusicexpress.co.uk| 24Tools Of The Trade...Country MusicDobro GuitarDobro is an American brand of resonator guitars, currently owned by Gibson and manufactured by its subsidiary Epiphone. The term “dobro” is also used as a generic term for any wood-bodied, single-cone resonator guitar. The Dobro was originally a guitar manufacturing company founded by the Dopyera brothers with the name “Dobro Manufacturing Company”. Their guitar design, with a single outward-facing resonator cone, was introduced to compete with the patented inward-facing tricone and biscuit designs produced by the National String Instrument Corporation. The Dobro name appeared on other instruments, notably electric lap steel guitars and solid body electric guitars and on other resonator instruments such as Safari resonator mandolins. The roots of Dobro story can be traced to the 1920s when Slovak immigrant and instrument repairman/inventor John Dopyera and musician George Beauchamp were searching for more volume for his guitars. Dopyera built an ampliphonic (or “resonator”) for Beauchamp, which was patented in December 1929. In mid-1929, Dopyera left the National company to start the “Dobro Manufacturing Company” along with his brothers Rudy and Ed, and Vic Smith. National continued operating under Beauchamp, Barth et al. Dobro is both a contraction of “Dopyera brothers” and a word meaning ‘good’ in their native Slovak, but also in many Slavic languages. An early company motto was “Dobro means good in any language.” In 1930, the Dobro company name was changed to the “Dobro Corporation, Ltd.”, with additional capital provided by Louis and Robert Dopyera. Dobro was, during this period, a competitor of NationThe Dobro was the third resonator guitar design by John Dopyera, the inventor of the resonator guitar, but the second to enter production. Unlike his earlier tricone design, which had three ganged inward-facing resonator cones, the Dobro had a single outward-facing cone, with its concave surface facing up. The DOBROSTYLETENORGUITAR1934

25 |www.countrymusicexpress.co.ukTools Of The TradeDobro company described this as a bowl shaped resonator. The Dobro was louder than the tricone and cheaper to produce. In Dopyera’s opinion, the cost of manufacture had priced the resonator guitar beyond the reach of many players. His failure to convince his fellow directors at the National String Instrument Corporation to produce a single-cone version was a motivating factor for leaving.Since National had applied for a patent on an inward-facing single cone (U.S. Patent 1,808,756), Dopyera developed a design that reversed its direction: Rather than having the guitar’s bridge rest on the apex of the cone as the National design did, it rested on an eight legged cast aluminum spider sitting on the perimeter of the cone.In the following years both Dobro and National built a wide variety of metal- and wood-bodied single-cone guitars, while National also continued with the Tricone for a time. Both companies sourced many components from National director Adolph Rickenbacher, and John Dopyera remained a major shareholder in National. By 1932 the Dopyera brothers had gained control of both National and Dobro, which they merged to form the “National-Dobro Company”. By the 1940s, National-Dobro had been purchased by Valco. Valco ceased production of Dobro-branded guitars after World War II; however, the Dopyera brothers continued to manufacture resonator guitars under various other brand names. In 1964, the Dopyera brothers revived the Dobro brand name. They sold the name to Semie Moseley in 1966. In 1970, the Dopyeras’ Original Musical Instrument Company (OMI) yet again reacquired the Dobro name. The Gibson Guitar Corporation acquired OMI in 1993, along with the Dobro name. The company became Gibson’s Original Acoustic Instruments division, and production was moved to Nashville in 2000. Dobros are currently manufactured by Gibson subsidiary Epiphone. The Dobro was first introduced to country music by Bashful Brother Oswald, who played dobro with Roy Acuff starting in January 1939.The first and second prototypes of the Dobro created by the brothers reside at the invention’s birthplace of Taft, California, in a museum about the town’s oil production history. On June 20, 2019, a 1933 Dobro Resonator Guitar Model 27, owned by David Gilmour was sold at auction for a record $112,500.Epiphone DobrosCurrent and past models of resonator guitars manufactured by the Gibson Company are::Hound DogRound neckDeluxe round neckDeluxe square neckM-14 metal bodyGibson’s Phil Leadbetter resonator seriesSPIDERSHAPERESONATORDETAIL

27www.countrymusicexpress.co.ukSTARS & THEIR GUITARSStars & Their GuitarsRy Cooder’s iconic 1967 Fender Stratocaster is without doubt, our most exciting guitar yet. With its many modifications, the Coodercaster is one of the most distinctive electric guitars in music history.Over the years, Cooder has truly made the instrument its own. The term Coodercaster is now a byword for a heavily modded Strat built to Cooder-esque specs. Given that he played in mostly open tunings, the top-mounted Bigsby was modified to help keep the guitar stable. “I had a repair guy take out the wang bar springs and put a wood block in there to hold down the intonation every time I changed tunings,“ says Cooder on the listing. “Now, years later, I wouldn’t have done that, but what did I know.“ The Coodercaster comes fitted with an original Bigsby 8-string steel pickup at the bridge and Guyatone pick-up at the neck. These are hooked up to a control circuit that has a four-way switch and two Tele-style knobs for volume and tone. “I started experimenting with electronics, trying for a thicker sound,“ continues Cooder. “P90s came and went. I had the bright idea to install an Oahu lap steel bridge pick up. It was the thing to do to help the bottle neck sound relax and it stopped the headaches.“ Other mods included a reverse jack cup, Got-oh-made Rotomatic-style tuners, and [Dunlop] Straploks. And the original tremolo was replaced by a top-mounted Bigsby and solid Bigsby aluminum bridge saddle. Stock appointments include a rose-wood ‘board and matching painted headstock. ”That’s an original Bigsby pickup in there, and yes it’s somewhat microphonic, like early Bigsbys are sometimes, and it takes a little getting used to, like when you put that ‘53 Cad motor in the Model A, but you can learn to handle it. Or try some idea of your own.” Cooder’s slow, relaxed slide style and ‘weird’ looking guitars have placed him firmly in the higher eche-lons of top guitarists in the world, not to mention one of my inspirations. What more is there to say...CoodercasterOriginalThis is one of those months when I have to confess to a guilty pleasure when it comes to guitarists I have come to admire. This months artist crosses the boundaries of Blues and Country with a strong hint of outback western thrown in for good measure. I am, of course talking about the slide king himself, Ry Cooder and his Coodercaster. Read on, dear friends...

www.countrymusicexpress.co.uk| 34LORETTA LYNN ~ The Queen still Reigns By Rick CornettThe Queen of Country Music is turning 90 years old! Without question Loretta Lynn holds the longest reign in Country Music history with an amazing 62 year career. She went from Coal Miner’s Daughter to becoming a world-wide music icon releasing 60 studio albums, the first prolific female songwriter in Country Music, The Most Awarded Lady in Country Music History, The first woman in Country Music to build an Enterprise, best-selling book author, First female headliner in Country Music, and the First living entertainer to have a major motion picture made of their life. Here is a look back through the decades of Loretta Lynn’s amazing life and career;1930’S & 1940’S She was born, Loretta Webb on, April 14,1932, in a depression era cabin that her parents, Ted & Clara, built in Butcher Holler, exchange for Loretta and Mooney’s labor they were provided Kentucky. The cabin still stands today in the remote hills of the bluegrass state. She was named after Hollywood movie actress, Loretta Young, and was not given a middle name. Loretta is the second oldest of eight children which include Melvin Jr. (1929-1993), Loretta (1932-), Herman (1934-2018), Willie Lee (1937-1996), Donald Ray (1941-2017), Peggy Sue (1943-), Betty Ruth (1946-), and Brenda Gail better known as Crystal Gayle (1951-).All of her brothers are now deceased and all her sisters are still living. Three of her siblings have held major label recording contracts following in her footsteps. Loretta attended School through the sixth grade in a one-room schoolhouse that also served as the Church on Sundays. Education was not a priority back then as children were needed to help with household chores, farming, and tending to younger siblings during the bleak depression years. When Loretta was eight years old her father bought a larger house in Butcher Holler that consisted of a living room, master bedroom, kitchen and a upper loft for the children to sleep. To the Webb family this was a mansion compared to the one-room cabin she was born in although it had no indoor plumbing or electricity. Loretta’s family owned this house and didn’t have to reside in a shack owned by the Consolidation Coal Company in Van Lear, Kentucky. The house still stands today as a tourist attraction for the millions of fans of the Coal Miner’s Daughter. Loretta grew up fast and her teenage years were cut short when she met and married, Oliver Vanetta Lynn Jr., in 1948. He was fresh out of the army and six years older than Loretta. They courted for one month and were married on, January 10, 1948, in a courthouse in Painstville, Kentucky, she was only 15 years old. Her husband is commonly refered to as Mooney, a nickname given to him when he used to sell moonshine. Loretta always called him Doo, a shortened version of Doolittle, another nickname given to him as a child. Mooney had no interest in following in the footsteps of other men in that region and becoming a coal miner. He moved out to the state of Washington by himself looking for work and a new home, leaving his pregnant child-bride behind. When he saved up enough money he sent for Loretta who boarded a train by herself to join her husband. In quick succession Loretta and Mooney produced four children: Betty Sue (1948-2013), Jack Benny (1949-1984), Ernest Rey (1951-), and Clara Marie (1952-). Life was hard for Loretta becoming a mother so young and now living so far from her family and friends. 1950’S By the early 1950’s Loretta Lynn had her hands full with a new husband, four babies, and managing a household. To make ends meet Loretta would take in laundry, pick strawberries, and cook for ranch hands. The Lynn family was living on a farm owned by the Green Brothers in Custer, Washington. In a house to live with limited pay. During this time Loretta was learning to become a good country cook and mastered the art of canning fruits and vegetables for her family. In 1956 Loretta entered her canned goods at the Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden, Washington. To her delight and surprise Loretta won 17 blue ribbons and was proclaimed Champion Canner of the Year. In time Loretta stated writing songs with her guitar and Mooney decided they could make some extra money with her musical talents. By the late 1950’s Loretta stated playing small honky tonk bars. It was her husband that set up her first public appearance at the Delta Grange Hall with The Westerners and her debuting with “There He Goes.” Soon Loretta was singing on a weekly radio show and formed her first band Loretta Lynn & The Trailblazers. It was in 1959 that Loretta was discovered by executives of a tiny record label named Zero Records of Vancouver, Canada. They spotted her at a Sunday jam session in a large chicken coop that was converted into a dance hall. Don Grashey, President of Zero Records, and his partner, Chuck Williams, soon signed Loretta to a recording contract on, February 1,1960, and sent her to Los Angelas, California to record her first recordings with funds provided by, Norn Burley, and other investors. 1960’SIn early 1960 Loretta and her husband received a shipment of 45 rpm records printed on the Zero Records label. It was her debut record “I’m A Honky Tonk Girl” written by Loretta. While the label paid for the recording session they had no money for promotion so Loretta & Mooney set out to promote the record themselves. Mooney took a photo of Loretta and sent that out with a letter and the record to DJ’s across the nation. They then jumped into the car and went on a promotional tour hitting every country radio station they could find. By the summer of 1960 the record had peaked at #14 in the Billboard charts and in September of that year Loretta made her debut at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. She was so popular that she was invited back for 17 consecutive appearances, an unheard of feat by a new artist on an obscure record label. The nations DJ’s ranked Loretta as the 4th Most Promising Country Female Vocalist for 1960 and a fan club had been formed for her growing number of fans. By 1961 Loretta and her family had relocated to Nashville. She was released from her Zero Records contract after releasing three singles with them. By this time Loretta was working under the guidance of The Wilburn Brothers who secured her a recording contract with Decca Records and producer, Owen Bradely. During this time Loretta met and befriended country star Patsy Cline. Together they developed a close and personal friendship that had a life long impression on Loretta and her career. In 1962 Loretta was invited to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry and her records were starting to slowly take off. By 1963 she was the featured girl singer on The Wilburn Brothers TV Show giving her national exposure. Her debut album, Loretta Lynn Sings, was released in December of 1963. It soon went #1 in the Cash Box charts making her the first woman in Country Music to achieve #1 album. Soon the legendary Ernest Tubb had taken her under his wing and they were recording albums together. In August of 1964 Loretta completed her family when she gave birth to twin girls, Patsy and Peggy. Patsy was named after the late Patsy Cline who had died sixteen months earlier. Loretta had established as the first prolific female songwriter in Nashville and her records consistently placed in the top ten. In 1966 her smash hit “You Ain’t Woman Enough” went #1 making her the first country female recording artist to write a #1 hit. She followed that up with “Don’t Come Home A Drinkin’” and that went #1 as well. The album by the same title was certified gold by the RIAA making Loretta the first woman in country music to receive a certified gold album award. In 1965 The Loretta Lynn Long Horn Rodeo was formed at the Lynn family farm in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. Loretta would make personal appearances to help make her husbands new venture a success across the nation. By 1966 Loretta had become the first woman in country music to headline her own shows with her own band and tour bus. In 1967 Loretta was the first woman to win a CMA award at their 1st annual awards show. The Lynn family brought the tiny town of Hurricane Mills, TN and relocated there in 1967. The town included a general store, grist mill, school, church and post office. The centerpiece to the vast estate is the white antebellum mansion that sits hilltop. Today the property serves as the Loretta Lynn Ranch open for camping, horseback riding, trail rides, fishing, live concerts and tours of Loretta’s home & museum. 1969 she became the first female country artist with an endorsement deal as she promoted, Hyer Boots. That same year the Loretta Lynn Westen Wear store chair was established. By the end of the 1960’s Loretta Lynn had established herself as the leading female vocalist overtaking the great, Kitty Wells. She had released 16 albums and scored more hit records than any other female artist for the decade. 1970’S 1960 - Loretta aunches her career with her debut single “I’m A Honky Tonk Girl” on Zero Records.

In 1970 she released the autobiographical song “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and it forever changed her life. The single went #1, the album was certified gold and Loretta gained a signature song that became an anthem. The song would also inspired a best selling book and an Academy award winning motion picture. Together they scored five #1 singles in a row, released 11 studio albums and became the most successful and awarded male/female duo in country music history sweeping all the major industry awards for duo including a Grammy award. Loretta’s popularity reached an all-time high when she was listed in a Gallup Poll of the 20 Most Admired Women in the World in 1971. Throughout the decade Loretta did over 200 tour dates a year with her band and it often took its toll on her health, marriage, and lack of family time. She was hospitalized several times but always bounced back and returned to the road to entertain her legion of loyal fans. Her fan base was so large and loyal during this time that she had the largest fan club in country music. Her willingness to come out and meet her fans & sign autographs after each show made her a fan favorite and endured her to millions that still follow her today. Her fans voted her the Favorite Female Vocalist for twelve consecutive years at the Music City News Awards 1967-1978, a feat that has never been beat. So popular was the Loretta Lynn story that she wrote and released her autobiography, Coal Miner’s Daughter, in 1976. It soon became a runway hit making her the first country artist to make the New York Times bestseller list. By 1977 she was the first female country artist with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 1979 saw her join forces with mega brand, Proctor & Gamble, to endorse Crisco Oil in national TV commercials and print ads. This endorsement lasted a full decade and made her the first country artist with a multimillion-dollar product endorsement deal. By the end of the 1970’s no female had achieved greater success or appeal than Loretta Lynn. She charted more hit records, won more major awards, and broke more records than anyone else so it was only fitting that the Academy of Country Music crowned her the Artist of the Decade for the 1970’s. No other woman has won this prestigious honor in the 6 decades of the awards show. 1980’S Clara Webb died on Thanksgiving Day in 1981 at the age of 69.
