Never give up if you really want to achieve something. Don’t take no for an answer if it’s not the answer you need to get where you want to go. There is always a way. LARRY C. KING 102

Set your goal and move forward. This will not always be a straight line and sometimes one step back is the best way to take two steps forward. Find a mentor – someone who has made the mistakes. While experience is the best education, sometimes the tuition is prohibitively expensive. CHRIS CARLSON 103

Chasing my aviation passion has not been linear, fast or predictable. In the end, you realize that there are three things to always keep in mind during the inevitable bumps and great times on the pathway: passion, perseverance and purpose. TAD IHNS 108

Flying is the ultimate renaissance skill. It combines the rigors of mathematics, navigation, engineering, meteorology and even physical training – but the magical view that unfolds before us represents the most beautiful form of art. JIM KEYES 115

It was a memorable flight home after taking delivery of my jet. Although the jet wasn’t supersonic, my mind certainly was that day. NED GREENOP 121

We had the privilege of flying children from Make-A-Wish on special flights over their hometowns in our rainbow Dream Chaser. What an honor it was to give the gift of flight to those kids who are fighting for their lives. The smiles on their faces will be with me forever. LYNN KROGH 122

Most of my flights are to keep important family, friends and colleagues connected in an increasingly busy, changing and often uncertain world. The general aviation airplane is an important tool that can be a safe, comfortable time machine. RANDY BROILES My father is getting quite old. A few years ago, he said that he’d love to visit every significant flight museum in the United States. Each year since then, we’ve planned a journey around a specific region and spent an aviation-filled week discovering planes we never knew existed, being awed by the audacious scope of things we knew but had never seen, and marinating in 100 years of airplanes. These trips would be impossible logistically on the airlines, and it’s a treat to share dad’s passion for planes. ADAM GROSSER I once transported two orphaned cougar cubs from Utah to their wildlife habitat area in North Carolina. It snowed the night before we left which made the in-flight scenery beautiful. When we landed, a reporter asked, “What would you have done if they had gotten out of their cages?” I replied that I would’ve hoped they were full from eating the five folks riding in the back before they would’ve gotten to me. It’s just two hours in the jet from our base airport to our ranch in Montana. We can go from home to a completely out-of-the-norm and laidback experience in such a short time. One of the best parts of the ranch is flying there. MARY COMPTON 131

My most memorable flight was taking my jet trans-Atlantic via Greenland and Iceland to visit my father in the U.K., while achieving a world speed record in class. BRAD AMOILS 136

My first flight in my L-39 went great in the air, but not on the ground. I was returning back home from training. During training my instructor had always gotten the step ready for me since he exited the plane first after each flight. Upon landing from my first leg of the flight home after getting my type rating, I opened the jet’s canopy. I stepped out and proceeded to fall down off the wing, right in front of the fuel guy – priceless! I had forgotten the step. MARK HALE 140

Flying disaster relief during the 2010 Haiti earthquake was incredibly memorable. The ability to bring supplies and volunteers to Haiti, then return to the U.S. transporting children with amputations, gangrene and other critical care needs to hospitals and see them thrive later was something I’ll never forget. Over the Caribbean I would put the kids in the co-pilot seat, disconnect the autopilot and let them fly. I’d give them logbooks after the flight, too. My contribution was small compared to the efforts of the ground relief teams, however the flights provided a critical lifeline to Haiti. RICH PICKETT 141

The reason I have the jet is the freedom it provides. The ability to travel to see new places, family and friends. To decide at breakfast in the cold Midwest that it would be good to have lunch someplace warmer. To visit my mother or play golf with my son while still making it home for dinner with my wife. My most memorable flight allowed me to see my father only hours before he passed away. CHRIS CARLSON 148
