Alfie’s rather suspect confession came just before an artist, sketching wild life scenes for Harper’s Weekly, came across the gruesome remains of five bodies. Swan, Humphrey, Miller and Noon had all been shot in the back of the head. Bell’s skull had been crushed with a rifle, which lay broken beside his body. All the bodies had large sections cut away, mute evidence of that most dreaded practice – cannibalism. A NEW TRIAL Before Alfie could be questioned about these startling revelations, he escaped. He changed his name to John Schwar- tze and lived as a devout Mormon in Salt Lake City for nine years. Sheer coinci- dence led to his apprehension. On March 12, 1883, a member of the original prospecting party recognized him on the street of Salt Lake City. Initially, he was found guilty and sentenced to hang, but an appeal to the Supreme Court won him a new trial. At this trial, conducted in 1885, 12 years after the murders, he was found guilty of five counts of manslaughter. He was sentenced to eight years in prison on each count. Alfie served 16 years of his sentence before being paroled in 1901. He died of natural causes in Denver, Colorado in 1907. AVAILABLE ONLINE: NFLDHERALD.com
