WAIT TILL I TELLS YA EDITORIAL BY: PAM PARDY BEST GIG EVER: POPPY PATROL A t 77, my father should be able to spend his time do- ing whatever in the heck he wants. That hasn’t been the case of late, however. Over the last year, Dad suddenly stopped spending endless hours chilling on the sofa, devoted dog at his side. He stopped watching endless hours of true crime drama or consum- ing documentaries on the life cycle of a sea cucumber. Instead, Dad began being a poppy plunked down to a plethora of Paw Patrol episodes just before, or just following, darting down the lane chasing after a darling little fellow called Kaleb – who just happens to be his grandson. FILE PHOTO JUNE 13 - 19, 2021/THE NEWFOUNDLAND HERALD 37 Did Annie Simpson get away with murder? morning, Annie fetched Dr. William P. Mallett, who prescribed some pills for an obvious case of upset stomach. All day Alex was in excruciating pain. That evening Dr. Mallett and a colleague, Dr. Benjamin Robinson, were summoned. They found the patient in a cold sweat, muttering that he was dying. He slipped into a coma and was soon dead. ARSENIC POISONING An autopsy indicated that Alex had died from arsenic poisoning. Annie pleaded not guilty. Prosecution attor- neys considered the case no contest. Annie had motive — to get rid of an un- wanted husband. She had purchased ar- senic — clerk Smith identified her from the witness stand. She had the opportu- nity to place the arsenic in the dessert. Not so, claimed Annie’s defence law- yers. Alex, distraught at his wife’s infi- delity, had committed suicide. Annie had purchased the arsenic, but it was to get rid of rats as she so vehemently claimed. You can never trust a jury. They found Annie not guilty. She walked out of the courtroom a free woman and, to add insult to injury, in- herited Alex’s fortune. Did Annie get away with murder? The question became academic when, two years later, Annie was found guilty of murdering her second husband in St. Paul, Minn. Seems she placed arsenic in his dessert. Annie’s luck ran out. This time she was hanged. AVAILABLE ONLINE: NFLDHERALD.com
