As Alfie recovered his strength, it be- came obvious that he had plenty of mon- ey to spend. In fact, he was a welcome sight at the Los Pinos saloon, where he drank heavily with the locals. It was his reckless spending which brought Alfie to the attention of army authorities. Just as their suspicions were coming to a head, two Indians report- ed that they had found strips of human flesh frozen in the snow just outside the settlement. GENTLEMAN’S AGREEMENT Faced with this horrible reality, Alfie changed his story. Now he claimed that he and his companions had run out of food. They dug in the hard ground for roots, but the cold weather made this task futile. Alfie stated that he was away from camp searching for wood when the oldest member of the group, a Mr. Swan, was killed by the other four men. They were cutting up his body for food when Alfie returned. Swan’s money, amount- ing to some $2,000, was divided among the survivors.
