For me, I always had an interest in photography and it was something I always enjoyed. Combining the two passions was the next step.” Winsor shares, while capturing a beautiful image anywhere in this prov- ince isn’t a challenge, getting that picture perfect shot can be, especially when it comes to wildlife. shot he had been dreaming about, for instance. “You get up and you are on the road at sunset and sunrise just trying to get that picture. Finally, I got it. Of course, I was really excited about that.” Excited might be an understatement. Winsor’s whale breaching image made him 2019’s Canadian Wildlife Photog- rapher of the Year with Canadian Geo- graphic. “The more you can just get out there, and ex- plore, and take pictures, and make mistakes ... the better you get.” — Michael Winsor STAMP OF APPROVAL There’s so much to celebrate, like an- other highlight: one of Winsor’s images of an iceberg in Ferryland is now a Cana- dian stamp, a fact that is still sometimes overwhelming in its awesomeness. “I went up to Ferryland, and I wanted to capture the iceberg before it moved, and I was waiting for twilight time and I had it pictured in my mind what I want- ed to do. I waited for the sun to go down, and I got the shot that I wanted,” he says. And the response? “It was crazy. There was so much ex- citement, and for me, it was overwhelm- ingly positive. There was something like six million of those stamps sent out all over the world.” Does he have a favourite image? Along the trail are also places to watch the boats come in and out of Burin Bay, just as Captain Cook did. LONG RIDGE HIKING TRAIL While some may be deterred by the hills close to the entrance of the trail, Long Ridge is an easy hike for those who want a quick route with a picturesque view. While the trail is only 1.8km long, the exit point is on the other side of the town, meaning a 2km walk is needed to get back to the entrance. Even though it’s mostly a dirt and for- est path, there are places with hand rails and bridges to get over some of the mud- dy areas. This path can be somewhat messy after a rainfall, but is usually a short hike with room enough to bring along a furry friend. The Sugarloaf ATV path can be ac- cessed from Bay L’Argent, and exits on Highway 212. While this can be a little difficult, daring hikers who can navigate the looser gravel will be greeted with a stellar view of Bay L’Argent, and the neighbouring community, Little Bay East. CHAMBER’S COVE This historic 5km route takes you along the path that the survivors of the USS Pollux and USS Truxtun ship- wreck would have traversed on February 8, 1942. The gravel path is an easy walk that leads you through a history lesson of the wreck, and provides hikers with an incredible view of the cove. A very groomed and scenic trail, Chamber’s Cove may be on the simpler side for experienced hikers, but provides a lengthier distance, along with a unique all-around experience and atmosphere. While the trail is well kept, the dirt road leading to the entrance may cause trouble for some low-clearance vehicles.
