Meet Brooklyn! Home Is Where The Heart Is By Lucinda Chrisman | Photos By Kristin Lee Vincent It’s a beautiful thing that we always have the opportunity to reinvent ourselves and evolve throughout our lives, even while things can stay consistent on the outside. Brooklyn Taylor, a long-time Santa Cruz resident and business owner, is a refreshing example of someone who embraces her own ongoing personal growth while continuing to be a leader in her community. Brooklyn, 41, hails from small town life in Utah, with two younger sisters and one older brother. Her childhood town of Morgan is located in Northern Utah, with a population of 6800. Everyone in the community is very close-knit, as most residents were related to one another in some fashion. “There are still, to this day, no stoplights in Morgan and virtually no crime,” Brooklyn recalls. “It was a great place to grow up. Very wholesome.” Despite the fact that most people, including her siblings, stayed there after high school to start their own families in the wholesome Mormon community, Brooklyn knew at a young age that she wasn’t meant to stay there. Free-spirited and artistic by nature, she had visions of having her own business doing something creative, and doing a lot of traveling. “As a child I was always painting, taking art classes and putting my skills to good use,” Brooklyn says. “I ran a face painting booth at the county fair and painted sets for a haunted house. It was one of my favorite jobs ever!” After graduating high school in 1996, she got a scholarship to attend Utah State University and took advantage of the 4 | May 2020

Both her younger sisters are married with kids. Emily, the youngest, eventually left Morgan for Bremerton, WA, when her husband, a nuclear engineer, took a position at a Naval Base near Seattle; they have three kids. Brooklyn’s other sister Danielle has two kids, and she and her husband are both social workers. Her older brother Jeremy also still lives in Morgan.
