MY STORYSome don’t believe in love at first sight. I do. As soon as I saw Astoria, I was in love. The streets,the architecture, the restaurants, and best of all, the energy. I was looking for a place to buy andI wanted to be close to transportation but also be able to have a car. Astoria you have the best ofboth worlds. I saw about 3 places and really liked one, but got cold feet. I saw one place I liked,but by the time I decided, it was gone. A month later, the broker for the listing I had lost called me—the deal had fallen through. I left work early and ran to see the unit again, offered over asking priceto make sure I did not miss out again, and I bought the property. This was in June of 2007 whenthere were a few buildings going up in Astoria but only about a handful. Since I was buying NewDevelopment, there was no real date as to when the property would be completed and when theproperty would be able to be closed on. For me that was okay, I had more time to work and makeextra money to buy furniture and for bills, etc. At the time the rates were around 6-7%. I was ableto get a loan at 6.5%. If you are reading this today, That is a HIGH rate!! But this was the onlyoption for me and it would NOT stop me from buying. I finally closed on the condo in December2017. I moved in and was so excited for this new venture in my life.Soon after I closed, the real estate market crashed. I didn’t panic. I didn’t really know how it wouldaffect me. Only that we were in a recession and companies were laying people off and at thetime I had a full time job and was not doing real estate full time at that time. I started doing rentalsfor a real estate company in Manhattan and made some extra money to pay my mortgage. I alsoworked full time in for a cosmetic company at the time that of course was one of the unlucky ones thatgot laid off. Here I am stuck with a hefty mortgage and I needed to find a way so I could pay mybills. I jumped into Real Estate full time. Here I am, 11 years later and I currently own two condosin Astoria and am on my way to buying a third. I refinanced a few times on my first property andcurrently use it for investment. Believe in the Astoria real estate market. Believe it will do good byyou. I did not want to rent, only wanted to buy and build equity. It was a risk, but with no risk,there would have been no reward.
