6 The President’s Digest Daily, Tuesday, May 23, 2023 Where Pictures Talk Thousands Of Words No. 407 TUESDAY, MAY 23, 2023 Memorable His Excellency’s Signature Digest Daily Let Religion and State operate separately There has been talk about regulation of religion in this country of late informed by the happenings at Shakahola in Kilifi County where over 250 people have been exhumed following deaths that has been asso- Theciated with some religious fanaticism down there. It is criminal to use a religious platform to commit a felony of any kind more so genocide as is the case at Shakahola. The government of Kenya moved swiftly to arrest the situation espe- cially to thwart more killings of innocent persons. It is the sole responsibility of the government to protect the people of Kenya, their lives and their properties which it did with gusto in the Shakahola debacle. Nevertheless, the metaphor of regulating religion in a bid to stop such incidences as the Shakahola shame can’t be a deterrent measure to stop future madness as this one really was. The only deterrent measure that the government can effectively em- ploy to deal with such diabolical acts as Mackenzie’s massacre is to identify the individual and deal with him personally as per the provi- sions of the law. The term Regulation of Religion in this context will for all intents and purposes mean the Christian religion, which itself will be discrimina- tive and therefore unconstitutional. To avoid legal actions and litigations, the government shouldn't be seen to indulge itself in an exercise that would turn futile at the end of the day but should adhere to the provisions of the law in so far as dealing with criminals of every nature including religious criminals are concerned.
