4In 1995 Herbert and Betty moved to James Park, Kilgetty where sadly Herbertpassed away some 18 months later. Betty made many friends in Kilgetty, quicklybecoming involved in the community joining The Golden Age, Joy Bells andBegelly Church although she was always on hand to play the organ back atCrunwere when needed. Her love of family, Cardiff and all sports remained a constant throughout her lifeand she was particularly proud to visit the Millennium Stadium to support Wales inone of their international matches.William Edward (Eddie) Jones, Rose AcreEddie was born in the Manchester area on 4th February 1940, the eldest of threechildren. He and his wife Anita moved to Roseacre, Llanteg, around 1990 fromAscot.Eddie had taken early retirement from the BBC where he had been employed as asound engineer. Wini took part in stage productions with Llanteg W.I.members and attended various classes at Denman College in Oxfordshire on anumber of occasions. She played darts and short mat bowls for a short while too.As a committed Christian all her life, Wini lived her life to do the best she could, atwhatever she undertook and always hoped that everyone appreciated her effort, which they always did: be it baking made for family or friends, things she grew inthe garden, flowers for church, cuttings of her best plants, craftwork and crochetmade and given away very generously and her hand-made cards - most people herewill have had one at one time or another and received the fruits of her labour.Wini was very talented and will be missed by lots of people; by her close friendsand extended family, Summerhill W.I., Llanteg History Group, Church members,Garden Clubs, friends and neighbours. 13 AMROTH WARD COUNTY COUNCILLOR Tony Baron 831677 [email protected] is almost a year since you elected me to be your Councillor. I am pleased to reportthat I have been very pleasantly surprised by the collaborative nature of the newCouncil. Faced with very difficult financial decisions, the Cabinet has beentransparent about the options and open to suggestions. As everyone knows PCC decided to raise Council Tax by 12.5% for the currentfiscal year. I, along with Councillors of all political parties, voted for the increase inorder to protect services, particularly education. Without the increase the educationbudget would have had to have been cut by an amount equivalent to the cost of 80teachers. Pembrokeshire Council Tax rates remain the lowest in Wales but clearly a12.5% rise is an extra burden when real incomes are essentially flat, taking intoaccount inflation. To spread the burden, Council Tax can now be paid in 12 monthlyinstalments rather than the previous 10.PCC have decided to charge a 50% premium on Council Tax for second homes. There are currently 117 second homes in Amroth Ward (3% of the total). Under thescheme adopted by PCC, 75% of the second homes charge is to be allocated to thecommunity council area in which it is raised. The remaining 25% is allocated to acounty wide grant. For Amroth Community Council (ACC) 75% of the second homecharge in 2018-19 is estimated to be about £20,000. This is a significant sum and theChairman of ACC, Cllr Stephen Phillips, is already developing interesting ideas asto how to best use the money for the benefit of the community including thoseowning the second homes. Note projects have to be approved by PCC for funding. The Hywel Dda University Health Board‘s proposals to change fundamentally theprovision of hospitals in its area all involve a downgrading of Withybush Hospital toa community hospital. However, the proposals include the construction of a newhospital with A&E facilities between Narberth and St Clears. For more informationsee www.hywelddahb.wales.nhs.uk/Hddchange. A 12 week public consultation onthe proposals started on 19 April. Let your views be known!Concerns about the safety of the A477 as it passes through Llanteg continue to beraised with me. In part this is due to recent planning applications but it is also due tothe excessive speed of traffic passing through Llanteg. This makes crossing the roadparticularly hazardous. The latest planning application relating to the redevelopmentof the Llanteg Service Station has been refused on the grounds that transport impactshave not been adequately addressed. The original planning application forredevelopment, however, is being appealed. While no one wants to stop economicdevelopments that bring extra jobs, road safety must be prioritised and I willcontinue to press for measures to reduce the speed of traffic through Llanteg. The heavy rainfall we have experienced so far this year has resulted in surface waterproblems and flooding in various parts of Amroth Ward, particularly along TrelessyRoad and in Stepaside. Remedial work has been undertaken to improve drainagealong Trelessy Road. Hopefully this will prove adequate and I will continue tomonitor developments in Stepaside. The inclement weather also affected the seadefences in Amroth, which PCC acted upon quickly. Tony Baron

14 THE BADGERS SHORT MAT BOWLS Neville Ruff 812605[email protected] Meet on Tuesdays & Fridays 7.00 pm at Llanteg HallThis season has been an eventful one for the Badgers in the Pembrokeshire short matleague. In the 1st Division we had some good wins when we thought we would loseand vice versa. The league results went down to the last game when we had to go toMerlin‘s Bridge and win which unfortunately we lost, so finishing second to Merlin‘sBridge, a creditable performance. In the Presidents league we started well and stayed in the top three throughout theseason. Again in the Presidents it came down to the last match away at Letterstonwhich we won to put us in a strong position. Penally had to go to Letterston andwin well but they lost so the Badgers finished top, so a very good season with thewhole team playing well and enjoying their bowling.Hazel Wadey continued to play for the Pembrokeshire county team which againwon the Welsh counties to show just how strong is Pembrokeshire bowling. We had one new member in Graham Jenkins who has proved to be a welcomeaddition to the Badgers. We would like to congratulate Llanteg on winning the Friendly League. 15 TAVERNSPITE SCHOOL NEWS Headteacher—Kevin Phelps School—01834 831691 [email protected] tavernspiteschool.co.ukTavernspite School is without doubt a wonderful and successful community primaryschool. It is very much the heart of the community and is proud of its high regardlocally. The school is almost full to capacity with a record breaking 230 pupils. Iwould advise any prospective parents in the area to make sure you contact the schoolin plenty of time in order to secure a place at the school. Recently, Estyn, the Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales carried out a full inspection at Tavernspite School alongside its federated partner school, Templeton. The whole school communities ofboth schools were absolutely delighted when Estyn judged both schools to have‗EXCELLENT‘ standards, the highest judgement possible. This is an incredibleachievement and is the result of a tremendous amount of hard work and commitmentfrom the staff, governors, parents and, most of all the children. At school our greatest pride is our pupils. As a team of staff we feel privileged towork with such characters, who bring so much fun, sunshine and joy to our workingdays. They work hard, are very friendly and supportive to each other and use theirtalents in the best possible way. Our mission statement ‗Be all you can be‘encourages all pupils and staff to reach their potential, whatever that might be.On Remembrance Day four of our older pupils laid a wreath at the NarberthCenotaph on behalf of Tavernspite Community School and a very specialRemembrance Day assembly was held at school in which a one minute silence wasobserved by all staff and children. At Christmas time we held a beautiful CarolService and the children were once again outstanding and filled us all with Christmasspirit! They were natural, confident performers who certainly enjoyed being on thestage. Other Christmas activities included a trip to the Torch Theatre to watch thepantomime, ‗Dick Whittington’, a brilliant Christmas Fete organised by the Friendsof Tavernspite School and a visit from Father Christmas. As a school we regularly take part in charity work. At Christmas time, we took partin the Narberth and Whitland Rotary Shoebox Scheme involving filling shoeboxesand sending them to countries in Central and Eastern Europe to children of all agegroups, orphanages, hospitals, disadvantaged families and women's refuges. Weraised money for Children in Need by children and staff dressing up in spots andraised £400 for this very important appeal. Sport Relief was celebrated andsupported by the children running a mile around the school field and unbelievably afantastic £969.80 was raised for the appeal. Some of our wonderful successes recently include; a brilliant Eisteddfod and Cawl aChan at school to celebrate St David‘s day ending with the traditional ‗Crowning ofthe Bard’ ceremony, winning the ‗Siarter Iaith Cymraeg – The Welsh LanguageCharter‘ Bronze Award which recognizes our commitment to providing high qualityWelsh language provision, and two of our pupils, Robyn Burke (Year 3) and MiliHughes (Year 6) winning a competition by designing Christmas cards for Mr IanWestley, the Chief Executive and Cllr David Simpson, Leader of PembrokeshireCounty Council respectively.

16Our sport teams have been very busy as always. The track team performed verywell at the Dyfed Cross-Country Championships in Carmarthen with OpheliaJenkins winning the Year 4 girls race. We have an active running club at school andthe children routinely run laps as part of the 30, 40, 50 mile challenge. Ourswimming squad competed in the Narberth and District swimming gala where theygained numerous first place performances and our other teams, football, rugby andnetball have also enjoyed many successes.Once again, thank you for taking the time to read our school news! 18 ST ELIDYR’S CHURCH, AMROTH Val Beynon 813091 [email protected] have just held our annual vestry meeting when we looked back on a year ofmixed fortunes. It was overshadowed by Marianne leaving us, but compensated forby the support we have received from Fr Paul Boyle, ably assisted by HannahKarpatty, who is training with a view to become a priest. We had the misfortune ofhaving a large piece of plaster fall from the ceiling at the end of the year and had touse the vestry for access. We managed not to lose a regular service and were proudto have remedial work completed in time for our carol service, which was wellsupported. Our craft festival filled the church with local talent, but sadly few peoplevisited during the week. We enjoyed having our table at the Llanteg Fun Day andmet many who were unaware that there was an active church nearby. We deliveredletters to a hundred houses across the parish, and invited all to assist in the first ofour graveyard clean ups. We have since had some professional work done on thelarger trees for safety and aesthetic reasons. It certainly looks better now.We also looked to our responsibility to Crunwere Church. There isconsideration of it being used as a site on a pilgrim route. In the meantimethere is potential of doing some graveyard maintenance and again we will belooking for volunteers. Do consider joining us.We look forward to the coming year with plans for two tidy days in Amroth yard:April 7th and Sept 22nd, both from 10.00 – 15.00pm. Bring your own lunch and wewill provide tea and coffee. We plan to provide light refreshments, and anopportunity to chat, after our normal 9.00 service on the fifth Sunday of thosemonths when they occur. We plan a service by the sea outside Amroth Arms on SeaSunday 8th July 17.00. We will hold a BBQ in Amroth Castle grounds on 14th Julystarting mid-day. Stall holders may purchase table space to display/sell their wares.Harvest Festival will be celebrated Fri 5th October followed by supper at AmrothArms. Our carol service will be on Fri 21st December followed by refreshments atHeatherland. 19 LLANTEG NATURE RAMBLINGS Kevin Caley [email protected] me, the 2018 summer will not be summer without a meadow full oforchids, and I am glad to say that we are blessed with three species (EarlyPurple, Common Spotted and Southern Marsh –right). There are possiblymore hiding in the surrounding countryside. Heath Spotted is listed in thearea, while twayblades occur near Templeton and lesser butterfly orchidslive in some of our coastal pastures. According to sources, 18 orchidspecies occur in Pembrokeshire. Apart from the Early Purple, which flowersin April, most of these flower in June and July. Most are pink or even purple, but a few - like the butterfly orchids - are white; others are green and, in the case of the beeorchid, even include brown and yellow. All are worth a close look. Each species has its ownfascinating pollination biology, from the normal attraction by scent and offering nectar, through those that only pretend to have a nectar source to those which employ total trickerythat has male bees, wasps or flies lining up to mate with a non-existent female! The orchid family is often regarded as a tropical group, but, with 28,000 species, it is one ofthe largest and most widespread of the flowering plant families, with representativesthroughout most of the world. True, the more northerly species are terrestrial and not soflamboyant as their tropical cousins, but when you get a healthy colony of orchids, they are asight to behold. Sadly, orchid populations are declining throughout the UK, primarily throughdamage to their habitat. Orchids are very sensitive to drainage and digging up, so theploughing up of our long-standing pastures is something to worry about, as is herbicidal drift.Even badly-timed mowing of verges can see once-healthy populations disappear overnight:just look at the grassy verge at the Kilgetty turn-off on the A477 - two years ago there wereupwards of fifty spotted orchids there. The contractors came in too early and the populationappears now to have vanished. Indeed, species like the green-winged and the butterflyorchids are characteristic of ancient meadows that have never been ploughed or drained, andtherefore to find them in numbers would be, well .... 'exciting' wouldn't do the feeling justice. As such, orchids can be regarded as 'the canaries' of local biodiversity health, much as theminers' canary was used in the past to assess the toxicity of mine air.Since the 1930s, the UK has lost 97% of its flower meadows, which is one of the biggesttragedies in the history of UK nature conservation. We already live in a wildlife-depauperateworld due to farming, hunting & developmental industrialisation. We do not - should not -allow the next generation to grow up not knowing the wonders of a healthy, highly diverse, floral meadow with hundreds of orchids popping up as if they were daisies in a lawn. Withoutthe wildflowers and natural habitats, pollinators and beneficial invertebrates can't survive, norcan the beneficial fungi or bacteria. Without these, our crops and even the very soil itself aredoomed, so short term monetary gain is not doing us or future generations any favours.Knowing where your orchids are and how to protect them must be one of the first steps toencourage a more sensitive stewardship of the land. So, why don't we create a 'Llanteg atlas'of orchids, to create a map of those good pastures, before they disappear forever? Becareful, though, as you might become obsessed. To add your records or help with ID, contact Kevin to help form a village orchid map.
