TAIR NANT WILDLIFE GROUP Dee 01994 453571 [email protected] We have three aims for our Tair Nant (Three Streams) Wildlife Group: to identify species in our area of study, to learn as much as we can about them and to see if we can help them in any way, i.e. by putting up nest boxes, beach clean etc. Our area of study is in an arc from Wisemans Bridge to Pendine, the northerly boundary being above the A477, approx halfway to Tavernspite. The hot summer last year produced a few surprises: several plants and trees blossomed and fruited for the first time in decades, a Green Woodpecker and its juvenile were seen locally (a first in this area for many years) and in September two Hoopoe were also spotted. These are unusual Mediterranean visitors. Thanks to Kevin who has provided us with lovely pictures and information in identifying the Fungi we saw at Colby and Woodreef in September. Also, thanks to those who refurbished our dormouse boxes. They will be going up in several locations and monitored by volunteers throughout the summer. Future Events Please be aware that any group activity is attended at your own risk. You will need to wear sensible footwear/clothing and in the interest of wildlife, no dogs, please. LLANTEG HISTORY SOCIETY Ruth Roberts 831298 [email protected] llanteghistorysociety.blogspot.co.uk Celebrating 20 Years - Exhibition June 23rd This year in March we celebrated 20 years, having formed in 1999. Since then we have published four history books, two picture books and various other booklets. We have done a complete graveyard survey with photos of the three village burial grounds, complied a millennium survey of properties, held three exhibitions, compiled various blogs and copied countless photographs that have been lent to us. So this June we will be holding a mini exhibition in Llanteg Hall alongside the Jo Cox get-together on Sunday 23rd June from 2.30pm - so do please pop in to see all the old pictures and also enjoy a cuppa and a chat - it will be a good chance to reminisce. Remembrance Sunday 2018 Once again we opened the Village Hall and much thanks to John James of Hafod Haf for conducting such a lovely service. This is the 15th year we have held services and it was made more poignant this year because it was the 100th anniversary of the ending of WW1. Various people brought along some family artefacts and we raised £30 for the British Legion Poppy Appeal. Society AGM and Meeting Tuesday 4th June 7.30pm This will be in Llanteg Hall - the AGM is over quickly and you won‟t be asked to be on the committee so, do pop along if you want to find out more.

VILLAGE HALL & COMMUNITY ASSOC. Sue James 831468 [email protected] Grant from Coop Community Fund It pays for people to be part of the Coop Community Fund group as last year the Coop donated over £19 million to local causes nationwide, and in November, Llanteg Hall was one of the beneficiaries chosen locally, when we were delighted and grateful to receive a cheque for £5,843.03. Four committee members went down to receive the cheque and we put on a small display of events that take place in Llanteg Hall. We plan to improve the lighting and also set up wifi, which will be a great benefit to hall users. We have already purchased a projector ourselves to add to the hall facilities. Remembrance Quiz Much appreciation to Mary Megarry who organised this event on Saturday 10th November and we were supplied with pizzas from Jeni at The Wanderer’s Rest. The hall was gaily decorated with Union Jack flags, we had a full hall and we all enjoyed trying to answer the 100 questions that Mary had skilfully put together to cover each of the last 100 years in honour of it being the 100th anniversary of the ending of WW1. Many prizes for the quiz and raffle were poppy related and also much thanks to Greenacre Market Garden for a sumptuous basket of produce for the raffle and to the Torch Theatre for a voucher. The evening raised £216 for the British Legion Poppy Appeal. Monthly Get-together Coffee Mornings These continue to go very well and are held on the last Friday of each month from 10.30am. It is all FREE so just pop along. We regularly get a fair proportion of men attending, so don‟t be put off coming along. We sometimes have going on for thirty people, so plenty to chat to and we raised £36 for the Welsh Heart Charity in March with a raffle. Village Art Craft & Hobby Afternoon 2.30-5pm Sun 22nd Sept Do you fancy coming along to an informal craft exhibition in the Village Hall? We will have local residents’ items on show. Please get in touch if you have any craft items to display (Ruth on 831298 or email [email protected]) - it could be photography, a painting, sketch, jewellery, knitted/crocheted item, woodwork, pottery - or anything else you make - it is not a competition and seeing other peoples‟ work may inspire you to try a new craft. Tea and cake will be provided and you do not have to exhibit to come along.
Village Get-togethers We try to hold regular free events that will bring the community together, hence why we have the monthly coffee mornings and also at least two informal get- togethers in the hall a year - usually the Jo Cox June event and one around Christmas/January time. This year we had a very successful Pudding Evening in January. As well as having lots of delicious puddings to sample we had a fun game of pudding bingo and a very pleasant social evening. Thanks very much to Diane Brown of The Meadow for donating a hand painted glass as the „house‟ prize. See the cover for the combined Jo Cox tea and Llanteg History Exhibition on 23rd June. DIY BBQ 26th August Bank Holiday This has now become an annual feature and everyone is invited to come along. Please bring your own food and disposable BBQs. We meet at The Claypits (on the opposite side of the road from Tenby Tourers) from around 5pm. Jill does a village walk beforehand with different routes each year, but you do not have to have gone on the walk to attend the BBQ. It is just an informal get-together and a good chance to meet up with neighbours. LLANTEG GARDENING GROUP Roy James 831468 [email protected] We started our gardening group back in September with around twenty attendees, and my thanks to you all for your enthusiasm, support and ideas. Initially, we decided to share information, ideas and plants, to visit places of gardening interest, though we decided not to form a club at this point. Since, we‟ve visited gardening clubs at Whitland, St Clears and Llangynin in order to gain ideas for future events. This has led to us having guest speakers and visiting Greenacre Market Garden, Stackpole Walled Garden and Colby Gardens, for walk and talk sessions. Some of us are gardening novices (like me), whilst others are more competent. So don't be afraid to join us! We are interested in growing in a sustainable way, we like no dig and permaculture, we don't want to use loads of chemicals or insecticides, and we don‟t want to damage the environment. Those who are growing or want to grow vegetables want to be self sufficient, though it‟s not just about growing veg, there is interest in growing flowers and fruit trees etc. Going forward, there is Ludchurch Horticultural Show at Llanteg Hall on August 2nd. We have walk and talk sessions planned for the summer at Picton Castle and Aberglasney, and visits to gardens (National Garden Scheme). Further talks at the Village Hall are to be arranged. If you are interested in joining us, then see Llanteg web page and our Facebook page, or email [email protected] for information.
AMROTH WARD COUNTY COUNCILLOR Tony Baron 831677 [email protected] As everyone is aware, Pembrokeshire County Council voted to increase Council Tax by just short of 10% this fiscal year. Members voted for this in order to protect the schools budget and social services as far as possible. The local meeting we held with PCC‟s Cabinet Member for Finance, which was well attended, largely supported this approach and I voted for the increase. However, such large increases in Council Tax cannot continue. It is essential that the Council‟s Transformation Programme to improve efficiency while improving working conditions delivers results. Obtaining sustainable cost reductions while maintaining essential services cannot be done overnight. Nevertheless, with Council tax almost a quarter higher, it is right that the emphasis must shift away from tax increases towards enhanced savings. The Transformation Programme is bearing some fruits but performance is patchy across the Council and delivery must improve. The Council‟s new kerbside sorting scheme for waste collection will start in October. The aim of the scheme is to improve recycling rates in order to meet the Welsh Government‟s recycling targets and to avoid heavy fines for missing those targets. As part of the roll-out of the Council‟s scheme to improve recycling, residents will be shortly required to prove that any black bags they take to waste recycling centres do not contain recyclable items. The remainder of last fiscal year‟s allocation of funds to Amroth Ward under the Enhancing Pembrokeshire Grant scheme, financed by the 50% Council Tax premium levied on second homes, has been rolled over to this year. Approximately £16,000 has rolled over and together with this year‟s new allocation of about £20,000 there is £36,000 that can be applied for. I am happy to assist in preparing the application for any project that adds value to our community. The process starts with filling out a short Expression of Interest (EoI) Form, which is forwarded to the County Council to check that the proposed project satisfies the criteria for the grant, before a full application is invited. It is most unlikely that any funds not used this year will be rolled forwarded again, so I would urge anyone with a project to start the process by submitting an EoI. There is also a small amount of EU Leader funding still available for eligible projects in Pembrokeshire. Again I am happy to assist anyone with a potential project. Applications need to be made as soon as possible. I am happy to announce that I have been appointed as a Local Authority Governor of Greenhill School. It is obvious to me that the Headmaster, Mr Ray McGovern, is having a very positive impact on the school and that he is well-supported by the Board of Governors, which operates in a very workman-like manner. I am very disappointed that PCNP have ignored the well-founded objections made by Amroth Community Council and others to the introduction of car parking charges in the Amroth car park. Only one member of PCNP voted against the introduction of charges, which will start to be collected in 2020 to the detriment of Amroth residents and businesses. I am supporting the Community Council‟s attempt to gain permission for brown tourist signs on the A477 to direct people to the start of the Coastal Path in Amroth. Hopefully PNCP will support this application, recognising its duty to care for the economic well-being of those living in the park.
THE BADGERS SHORT MAT BOWLS Neville Ruff 812605[email protected] Meet on Tuesdays & Fridays 7.00 pm at Llanteg Hall We are coming to the end of a long season which has seen mixed results. Problems have been with losing players and illness, which many clubs are experiencing. We are into the semi final of the Bisley Munt Cup which will be played in April. On a very positive note, we have been lucky to get Sarah and Chloe Thomas to join and both have been a big asset, Chloe being picked for the Welsh under 21 side. Hazel Wadey has run some coaching sessions that were well received and intends to do some more if possible. We look forward to some friendlies and enjoyable club nights during the summer. LLANTEG SHORT MAT BOWLS Sally Watts 831359 [email protected] Meet on Mondays & Thursdays 7.00 pm at Llanteg Hall League Winners for a Second Year Pauline Davies & Llanteg SMBC have had another successful and Peter Walker enjoyable year, again winning the South Pembrokeshire Short Mat Bowls League, which has consisted of 9 teams this year, with games home and away. We were also runners-up in the Viv Bramhall Cup, after some excellent and hard-fought games. Allen and Sally Watts brought back the league doubles trophy for the second year in a row. We meet in Llanteg Hall on Mondays and Thursdays from 7.00pm till 9.30pm. We have a break during August but play the rest of the year. 15 TAVERNSPITE SCHOOL NEWS Headteacher - Kevin Phelps School - 01834 831691 [email protected] tavernspiteschool.co.uk Tavernspite School is very much the heart of its community and is proud of its high regard locally. The school is extremely popular with an excellent reputation based on its continued high performance over a very long time. As a result, it is almost full to capacity. I would advise any prospective parents in the area to make sure you contact the school in plenty of time in order to secure a place for your child(ren). After our ‟Excellent‟ Estyn inspection just over 12 months ago, in which Tavernspite and its federated partner school, Templeton, were judged to have „EXCELLENT‟ standards, the schools have enjoyed a whirlwind of activity. This, coupled with the fact that they are both „GREEN‟ schools, as reported by the Welsh Government National Schools Categorisation model, means that schools from across Wales have visited Tavernspite and Templeton to share their exemplary practice. The children, and their families, are incredibly kind and supportive and this has been shown by the amount of fundraising and charity work we have done. We raised £455 for Children in Need with children and staff dressing up in spots and stripes. The Narberth and Whitland Rotary Club were very grateful when we took part in their ‘Shoebox’ Appeal’. Comic Relief was supported by the children dressing up and we raised over £600 for this important charity. At Christmas our school choir visited Waungron and St. David‟s Avenue residential homes in Whitland and Dol y Felin in St Clears. The children were brilliant and brought a great deal of Christmas cheer. On Remembrance Day two of our pupils laid a wreath at the Narberth Cenotaph. Our Year Six children took part in the WW1 exhibition in Whitland to commemorate the First World War. The artwork that the children submitted for the exhibition was of an excellent standard. At Christmas we performed our concert productions, transforming our hall into a theatre by using beautifully painted backdrops and props and sound and light production teams to help to make the experience truly memorable. The younger pupils performed „Children of the World‟ and the junior production was called „Who?’ The children were, as always, absolutely outstanding!!! I am always astounded by their talents and confidence performing to such large audiences. We received many wonderful messages complimenting the children and staff on the quality of the performances. Tavernspite School is very committed to environmental issues and healthy lifestyle choices. This has been reflected in our recent successful renewal of our Eco-Schools Green Flag: 4th Platinum award and the healthy schools National Quality Award, very few schools have reached this status for the 4th time. St. David‟s day was celebrated with an Eisteddfod and a Bardic Ceremony awarded to the student with the best poetry writing skills. The winning art entries and musical/recital performances were displayed and performed at our Cawl a Chan evening. Once again, thank you for taking the time to read our school news! Kevin Phelps, Headteacher A Date for your Diary: We are organizing a Fun Run at Colby Woodlands on Saturday, June 8th at 11am. Registration at 10am. The distances vary and there are events for children aged 3-4 years, 5-7 years, 7-9 years, 9-11 years, 12-16 years and adult races. Medals for all finishers and trophies for the winners. Everyone welcome – you may register on the day!
STEPASIDE SCHOOL NEWS Headteacher - Paul Harries School - 01834 812764 [email protected] www.stepasideschool.co.uk Stepaside CP School held their first Rainbow Run on Thursday 11th April. Organised by Mrs Blewitt, class teacher, the event involved the whole school community and beyond. Pupils gathered sponsorship from family and friends and all pulled together to raise in excess of £3000. Fantastic prizes for the highest fundraisers were donated by Bluestone, Broadway Mansion, Laugharne, The Carpenters, Laugharne, and the Co-op Kilgetty and Mr and Mrs Blewitt. Further prizes from 1 Formula Fitness, Kilgetty and Twisted Tangles, Kilgetty, were added to Easter goodies donated by staff and parents for a raffle. Friends of Stepaside School manned a stall on the afternoon where colourful refreshments were available. Donations of fruit were received from Mr and Mrs Pearce, Pendine fruit and veg, and these were added to rainbow cupcakes made by staff and parents. The sun shone all afternoon as runners donned white t- shirts, colourful accessories and sunglasses (Mr and Mrs Ardern donated extra sunglasses for the runners to wear). The run began at 1.30. Running through a colourful balloon arch and showered in powder from the starter cannons, runners set off around 5 circuits of the school field. Each pupil runner was presented with a beautiful rainbow medal. “We are overwhelmed by the support we have received to make this event possible. From the generosity of the sponsors to the local companies for their support and even the powder supplier for their amazing help and advice. We never dreamed we would raise so much money for new computers for the pupils and we have achieved that aim, and some!” Mrs Chandler-Hall, Acting Headteacher SURFERS AGAINST SEWAGE Anna & Jaz Strzelecki [email protected] Facebook - ‘Pembrokeshire Beach Cleans’ Thank you to the 112 volunteers (regulars, locals, holiday makers and anyone else who joined in) who helped clean Amroth beach on Easter Sunday of over 40 bags of rubbish and hunted for 'eggs' (painted pebbles) in return for chocolate prizes, kindly sponsored by Amroth businesses. There are about 12 painted pebbles still missing, so if you took them home please can you kindly return them to the Pirate Café, or, if you find any, please drop them at the cafe and let us know.
LLANTEG LITERATI Mary Megarry 01834 811510 [email protected] The village‟s own Reading Group continues to thrive, now into its third year! There are 13 members, which ensures a good monthly meeting with lots of lively discussion and diverse opinions. The Group provides an opportunity to read books which may normally be outside of the individual‟s “comfort zone”. This is demonstrated by the books read in the past year which vary from “A Year of Living Danishly” – a non-fiction diary of an expat Brit living in Denmark – to a Christian novel “Unlocked”, from the wonderfully surreal “How to Stop Time” to the potentially harrowing “The Tattooist of Auschwitz”. A full list of the books, together with the group reviews, can be found on the Llanteg Literati Facebook page. Meetings are on the penultimate Tuesday monthly at the Wanderer‟s Rest. Thanks so much to Jeni for her hosting. Anyone interested in joining the group or possibly forming a second one, should contact Mary on 07970 755312, via the Facebook page or email as above. CRUNWERE CREATIVE ART GROUP Patricia Phillips831497 [email protected] Our Art Group was formed at the end of November 2018 in response to a feeling that an Art group in Llanteg would possibly attract members who had an interest in pursuing their creative talents. We meet in the village hall on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month from 10 - 12 noon. We usually have around 10 members and there is always plenty of chat and sharing of ideas. Every month we suggest a different theme for us to concentrate on, but it‟s entirely optional and members can concentrate on whatever subject they wish. Water Colours, Acrylics, Pencil and Charcoal are mostly the media we use but other materials are welcome; we are all keen to try different formats. There is a small charge for each session to cover the cost of hiring the hall. Why not come along and develop your own talents? A warm welcome is extended to all new members. If the group may interest you, please contact Patricia Phillips, as above. 18 ST ELIDYR’S CHURCH, AMROTH Val Beynon 813091 [email protected] The Parochial Church Council (PCC) met recently to discuss the situation with the graveyard at St Elidyr‟s Church. Over 700 people are buried in the churchyard adjacent to St Elidyrs and, without extensive work on an area beside and below the church, the graveyard will shortly become full. The PCC decided that they were unable to find the funds to undertake this work. We are fortunate in the parish to be able to use the graveyard at Crunwere. It was therefore decided that when the current St Elidyr‟s churchyard becomes full it will be closed to burials which require new graves. We are still awaiting the decision from the Church in Wales as to what is to happen to the old Crunwere Church. Once that decision is made, we shall undertake repairs to the walls and fencing and carry out essential ground maintenance. We will be looking for local support to maintain the graveyard, as we do already at Amroth. Unfortunately, Church rules deny the ability to reserve “future plots”, without there being quite exceptional circumstances. The Churchwardens therefore felt we should alert local parishioners early as to the future of our two graveyards. If anyone wishes to discuss this with the churchwardens, they will be delighted to explain the circumstances in more detail. We will shortly be launching a “Friends of Amroth Church” to help fund some of the maintenance to keep our lovely church open and to help maintain the graveyards. Please support us if you can. 19 LLANTEG NATURE RAMBLINGS Kevin Caley [email protected] I have been wondering what to write about for this article this spring. Previously, I have talked about our autumn fields and hedgerows, the number of species recorded just within our little parcel of land and how we are fast approaching the magical 500 species mark (now standing at 497, 2019). I have even looked at a well known cornfield flower which has a rather more obscure past. So, what now? I realised in all of this that I hadn‟t covered the nocturnal creatures. Well, I‟m a day creature, so why should I? There are loads of reasons why I should, what with badgers and foxes, owls, moths and glow-worms all to be found within the Amroth Ward ..... yes, even glow-worms, although the records from Colby are old. My research to date has shown that this beetle was probably last seen in the immediate area in the mid 70s, although it still exists in some coastal Pembrokeshire areas, including Freshwater East and Ramsey Island. Contrary to current occupancy, it isn‟t usually restricted to the coastal strip, but, as seems to be a common phenomenon in Pembrokeshire, this seems to be where the last colonies are now found, pushed to the extremities as modern farming practices damage their habitats. It‟s a sad state of affairs that an animal such as this has disappeared, particularly given that its favoured prey is actually one of gardener-kind‟s most „notorious‟ pests: snails! This got me thinking: is there is chance we could reintroduce such an amazing species as the glow worm (Lampyris noctiluca - the „Night-light Shining One‟) to our pastures once more, our only „firefly‟ in Wales? Imagine a fine summer night and a meadow and hedgerow glimmering with the small green points of light emitted by the female glow-worms as they attempt to attract males to them. How would we go about reintroducing the animal, though? The principles are the same for any reintroduction. You would start by looking at why it disappeared in the first place, see if its old haunts still exist and Female Glow Worm in what state. You would then examine current potential food c. C.C.Wiki sources and threats - are there enough snails to sustain a population? Are the beetle‟s predators still around and, if so, in what numbers? You don‟t want your prize animals eaten before they‟ve even had a chance to reproduce! Are chemicals used on the land? These are still a major problem, and include slurrying, pesticides and herbicides. Are levels of these chemicals in the soil and plants at such a level that recolonisation is not actually an option? Then, finally, you must consider the animals themselves - where can they be sourced from, what diseases could they carry, how fast do they breed, how long would they need to be kept in captivity before release is attempted; and finally, how many individuals do you need to make a release successful, as you will inevitably suffer some losses? All this needs to be factored in before you can assign costs and timelines to such a project. Fortunately, it is cheaper with an insect than a large mammal! So, going back to the question, COULD we imagine these glowing night -lights back on our lands in Amroth & Llanteg? Possibly, but it would take years of work before anything begins to show, and it will still cost a lot. So, in our case, maybe not just yet.
