LLANTEG NATURE RAMBLINGS Kevin Caley [email protected]: that is the number of native species I have recorded so far on our little slice ofLlanteg. This number excludes all of the planted species, such as snowdrops (an import fromTurkey) and the dubiously native Tenby Daffodil. The latter, although now recognised as arace of the more common Wild Daffodil (aka Lent Lily), seems to have its origins in Spain, according to the botanical papers I have read so far, although you would have to ask 'whythese particular daffodils?' Anyway, I digress ..... Among the species we have seen, and which I have got excited about, are Silver-washed Fritillary (left), one of our largest butterflies, a shade-lover dependent upon dog-violets for its early life history and a lover of brambles as an adult; Common Sexton- beetle, a brightly-coloured, orange and black, burying beetle without which our countryside would be full of small dead bodies, and which also contributes in a small way to aerating the soil; and wood sorrel, arather pretty woodland species found in our copse whose leaves look like the legendaryshamrock, but whose flowers remind one more of a small delicate wood anemone. Why am I mentioning this? My intention is to maintain our back meadows and hedgerowsusing traditional techniques and in a format that would be familiar to a farmer from the early19th century, which should see these areas develop into 'High Nature Value' meadows full oflife and with a high species diversity. I am particularly keen to see the butterflies and mothsprosper, as they are really having a bad time of it at the moment, what with the effects of badweather being exacerbated by current farming and 'garden-cleaning' practices throughout theUK: a plight we need to reverse if we want these beautiful creatures to remain in ourlandscape, and for which we can all do our bit. Therefore, I am also looking around to findsome local meadows that have had similar treatment, in order to find out what species aremissing from our own site, and maybe provide some help and advice in return, should peoplebe open to that. Already we are seeing results in our hedges, with wood anemonescolonising the banks from where they had all but disappeared, whilst cuckoo-flower is nowcommon in the scythed areas of the somewhat overgrown grasslands. We have already hadorangetips lay dozens of patches of eggs, so next year looks hopeful, at least. Scything is farfriendlier on wildlife than mowing, if a bit more labour-intensive: you can stop before youdecapitate a frog, or halt when you get close to an orchid, providing short sward at the sametime that may be colonised later, although it is always a difficult hope with orchids, given theirsmall, fly-away, seeds. Scything also allows you to get close to the wildlife and see things thatyou might have missed otherwise, and I use these excursions to note the insects I am kickingup, thus adding to that number I began with. At some point, we will also include aconservation herd of sheep and cattle, and develop a native varieties orchard. All thesemanagement techniques or inclusions are things that I am intending to do to create a largerpollinator biobank which should spill out into the neighbouring area and help in the pollinationof others' plants or crops - my bit for local conservation!

UPDATE - After a recent spate of new species discoveries at'The Downs', I have just added my 375th native species to thelist ..... and it's a 'mega' ..... Grasshopper Warbler! Only 16,000pairs in the UK, and 670 of these are in Pembrokeshire.I haven't located him visually yet, although I now have a goodidea of the male's song area. Positively bouncing ....... I've only C. RSPBrecorded these on a handful of occasions before (about 20 times in all my years of birding), allon charity reserves ............ 13 AMROTH WARD COUNTY COUNCILLOR Tony Brinsden 831775 [email protected] I start by saying a very big thankyou to all who have supported me throughthree local government elections over the past 13 years. It certainly doesn't seemthat long since I first stood in 2004.Although it has not been easy it will be even more difficult for my successor, whoever he or she may be, as there are further horrendous cuts in the financescoming through from Welsh and National Government over the next four years. Icertainly did not become a County Councillor to cut services to my constituents andI am sure that applies to my successor as well but with the spiralling costs of socialservices and education I am afraid that further cuts are inevitable.Over the past year, during my Chairmanship of the County Council, Margaret and Ihave been to some wonderful events that we would not have otherwise attended. These include a Buckingham Palace Garden Party, the enthronement of the firstfemale Bishop in Wales and a number of British Empire Medal presentations atCounty Hall. It also showed us the immense number of talented people we haveliving and working in Pembrokeshire who one rarely hears about outside their owncommunities. On the more mundane side of things I have managed to get the worst of the roads inour Ward resurfaced. Whilst we moan about the state of our roads I travel aroundthe Country quite a lot with the MG car club and the state of the roads in otherCounties are in the main far worse than Pembrokeshire. Only last weekend we werein the Derbyshire Dales and I had to use extra Dentafix to keep my teeth in place!!Well this is the last Councillor’s report you will receive from me so could I end bysaying another big thankyou to you all and also could I wish my successor the verybest of luck. Tony Councillor Tony Brinsden This will be Tony’s last contribution to Llanteg News in an official capacity as Councillor. As such it is appropriate for a few words of appreciation for his involvement as a member and past Chair of the National Park Authority, his roughly 20 years on the Community Council and of course, his role as County Council representative for this area which has culminated this year as Chair of Pembrokeshire County Council.Tony has fulfilled his respective responsibilities with great dignity, excellent local knowledge, humility, an approachable attitude, and of course, thevery important ingredient of humour.

Many thanks Tony for your dedication and commitment. You will be a hard act tofollow but I am sure your successor, whoever that may be, will strive to emulate yoursuccess and achieve the level of gratitude which you have so warmly deserved. John James Llanteg Village Leaflets A copy of our 2007 Village Leaflet is included with this Newsletter for those who may not have seen a copy. It details some of the history of our little parish of Crunwere and village of Llanteg. More history can be found in the Llanteg History Society books and booklets (see page 5). Fibre Optic Broadband Coming to LlantegA letter has been received from Simon Hart MP regarding FibreBroadband being available in the village. It seems on March 30th hereceived an email from Openreach which states: 'the Llanteg Cabinet 1 Fibre structure is now in commissioning. It willbe approx. 6-8 weeks before customers served by this structure will beable to place an order’.Simon goes on ‘From my research I understand that households in the Llantegpostcodes SA67 8PU, SA67 8PS and SA67 8PZ (as well as some in SA67 8PR) willbe able to sign up to FTTP (Fibre to the Premises). Ed Hunt, Director of SuperfastCymru, has assured me that ‘if we deliver FTTP to a constituent, the costs areexactly the same as someone who is connected to FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet). Ifyou want to double check that you will be able to take advantage of this newtechnology then please look at www.beta.gov.wales/go-superfast and select youraddress’. (The full text of the letter is on our website and Facebook page). 15 TAVERNSPITE SCHOOL NEWS Headteacher—Kevin Phelps School—01834 831691 [email protected] tavernspiteschool.co.ukBoth Templeton and Tavernspite Schools underwent a scrutiny visit in the Autumn Term byERW, the education consortium, in which standards are closely monitored by an externaladviser. As a result, both received Green School 1A status (highest). It was wonderful forTavernspite to continue this status from last year and for Templeton to achieve it for the veryfirst time, moving on from Amber status two years ago.Other recent highlights include our Harvest Service in which all the children performed. Theincredibly generous display of produce on our Harvest Table was distributed to a number ofsenior citizens, residential homes and the local Foodbank in Narberth. On RemembranceDay four of our older pupils laid a wreath at the Narberth Cenotaph. A very special assemblywas held in which a one minute silence was observed by all staff and children. I wasexceptionally proud of all of the children who were all respectful and very well-behaved.At Christmas time traditionally, every two years we prepare and perform concert productions. To fully heighten the experience we transform our hall into a theatre by using beautifullypainted backdrops and props. We also use sound and light production teams to help to makethe experience for the children and the audiences truly memorable. This year the Foundation Phase performed ‘Superstar’ and the Juniors’ production was‘Gimme, Gimme, Gimme’. It told the deeply emotional story of two spoilt children wholearned the true meaning of Christmas by visiting those less fortunate, including Syrianrefugees and sick children at a hospital. We are very grateful that so many parents, grandparents and friends came to watch. I was astounded by their talents and confidenceperforming on the stage to such large audiences. As the children enjoy singing so much our choir went on a Christmas tour and sang at anumber of residential homes including Waungron, St. David’s Avenue residential homes inWhitland and Bloomfield Elderly Day Care Centre in Narberth. The children were brilliant andbrought a great deal of Christmas cheer to the residents. Other activities included a trip to theTorch Theatre to watch ‘Sleeping Beauty’, a brilliant Fete organised by the Friends ofTavernspite School and a visit from Father Christmas. We had an enjoyable Eisteddfod to celebrate St. David’s Day with the children competing ina number of art, music and poetry competitions to score points for their houses and celebratelife in Wales. The children looked very grand with many dressed in Welsh national costume. The Eisteddfod finished with the traditional Crowning and Chairing of the Bard with Welsh folkdancers. The winning art entries and musical/recital performances were displayed andperformed at our Cawl a Chan evening which was very well supported. We are also a very charitable school. Since the last newsletter the children have given verygenerously to a number of appeals whilst having some fun. We all got spotty for Children inNeed, ran miles for Comic Relief and took part enthusiastically in the Narberth and WhitlandRotary Club ‘Shoebox’ Appeal’ to provide much needed items to children in desperatesituations in other countries.

We had a great time celebrating World Book Day. The children looked wonderful dressed upas their favourite characters and awards were presented to the best dressed pupils in eachclass. There were also activities throughout the day including story reading sessions with theolder pupils reading to the younger children. Our sport teams have been busy as always. The track team performed very well at the DyfedCross-Country Championships gaining a first place (Ophelia Jenkins – Year 3 girls) and a 3rdplace (Harry Billingham – Year 5 boys). These are major events and all the competitors did theschool proud! We have an active running club and the children routinely run laps as part of the30, 40, 50 mile challenge. Our football team competed in the Urdd local round and wereeventual winners, now representing the Tenby Area in the County Finals. Our netball teamcame second in the Cylch Clunderwen, the local round of the Urdd netball tournament. Bothteams enjoyed some great matches at Stepaside School recently. Our thanks to the Headteacher Mr. Paul Harries for the very kind invitation. Our swimming squad have been active too! Millie James and Nia Philipps-Waring enteredthe Urdd Gala at Haverfordwest. They both performed well and enjoyed some great races.Millie did particularly well in the freestyle race coming 4th out of 53 competitors. As a school, we are considered a centre of excellence for promoting Pupils’ Wellbeing,Healthy Schools, Eco and Sustainability and Fairtrade. In the past we have received all thetop awards including the Healthy Schools National Quality Award and the PlatinumEco-Schools award. We are very proud that we have recently passed a reassessment in eachof these areas with flying colours. And finally……thank you to our brilliant team of parents and staff, our ‘Groundforce Team’for recently giving up a great deal of time, resources and expertise to create and build our newoutdoor and multi-sensory learning area for the Foundation Phase children. It is truly fantastic.Once again, thank you for taking the time to read our school news! The idea is that when the flowers bloom the children will hold an assemblyto explain and raise awareness of the illness and the work that the Rotary Club do to supportits eradication. The crocus was chosen for this campaign as the purple colour represents thedye placed on the fingers of the children as they are vaccinated. On Friday February 3rd pupils from Dosbarth Cadno travelled to the Egypt centre at SwanseaUniversity. The trip was funded by the Arts Council of Wales ‘Go and See Fund’ whichallows pupils access to exhibits which are normally out of reach due to financial constraintson school budgets. ‘Dosbarth Cadno have been studying the Egyptians as part of their topicwork this term, we were so very grateful to receive this funding and to be able to send ourpupils to experience firsthand the artefacts and aspects of the Egyptians which they arestudying in class’ commented Mr Richard Adams, class teacher. They were amazed to seeoriginal artefacts from the ancient Egyptian times and even got to handle them. The centrestaff offered different activities to suit the interests of the class including exploring what itwould be like to discover Tutankhamen’s tomb, hieroglyphics and mummification ceremonies.Mr Adams continued ‘This was a unique opportunity for the children to learn about theEgyptians in a fun way. The staff at the centre had expert knowledge and enthused everypupil throughout the day. We will be using these learning experiences back in the class room.It was a memorable trip which has enhanced their learning and their ability to connect withthe topic.’ We celebrated World Book Day in school by dressing as our favourite character and with lots of other reading focused activities such as a local author visit, reading to dogs volunteers Michelle and Frankie and a book quiz. We asked Year 4 pupil, Alice Gottwaltz to write a report for us: ‘Pupils and teachers dressed up for World Book Day on 7th March, we moved our day as the Year 5 pupils were in Llangrannog and we wanted everyone to join in with the activities. We do this to inspire children to read at home and to show them that books are not boring but exciting and fun. Iinterviewed some pupils about their costumes, ‘I am Mrs Twit from the Twits by Roald Dahl. Ithink every year reading inspires me to read lots of books. David Walliams is my favouriteauthor’. That was a lovely comment from Lucy Lewis. Today we read to the Reception class. Iread to a boy called Oscar, we read Pirate Pete together. In the afternoon we had a quiz. Anauthor came in called Nicola Dean, she showed us her first published book. It was a very nicebook, it was called PANAPS for little people, they are poems about how to defeat a bully, about silly and funny times and writing with patience.’

All classes participated in the school eisteddfod insinging, handwriting and art competitions. Some pupilsrepresented the school at the Amroth Parish Hall for theWI coffee morning.Stepaside School has been well represented in Countysports over the past few months in gymnastics, football, swimming and cricket. It was with sadness that last term we waved goodbye to Mrs Susan Hughes as she retired from teaching. She has been at Stepaside CP School for over 20 years. Many pupils have passed through her classes and been touched and inspired by her teaching. She has taught outstanding choirs and led many productions. A special mention must be given for her dedication during the school’s participation in the Shakespeare Schools Festival. Her musical giftswill be missed. Susan has contributed to every aspect of school life. Mrs Hughes washonoured in a special assembly where previous head Mr Griffiths and recently retired MrMerriman put in a special appearance as Mrs Hughes was pitted against staff and pupils insome challenges taken from popular TV shows. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the assemblyand it concluded by the pupils and staff singing ‘Thank you for the Music’. We hope that MrsHughes will be a frequent visitor in the future and wish her well on her next adventure. We have also had visits to Morfa Bay Trenches experience, Pizza Express, Tenbyand Cilgerran. We have had many visitors to the school including Trefloyne Golf Club, PCDavies, The Rotary Club and Reverend Mansell who brought Mary and Joseph on the first legof their Advent Journey.
