THIRDTIME’SACHARM “Challenging,invigoratingandrewarding”ishowour2017LionFoundationYoung EnterpriseSchemeNationalChampions,OleleidescribetheirYES experience. Afterthreeyearscompetingintheprogramme,coming3rdin2015,2ndin2016 andfinally1st,theteam hasshowntheultimatededicationtotheircompany. “BeforeenteringYES,wehadn'trealisedschoolcouldbeasfunasitwas!Wenever thoughtthatwewouldenjoyturninguptoschooltodo\"work\"butbecausewewere abletogrow somethingandseethedifferenceweweremaking,itmadeitallthat morespecialandenjoyable”saidMattBillington,CEO ofOLelei. “ProgrammeslikeYESareimportantinfosteringconfidence,self-beliefanddrivein theyoungergeneration.W ithoutparticipatinginYES,wewouldhaveneverhadthe confidencewedonowtostepoutofourcomfortzoneandparticipate(andexcel)in differentpartsofourcommunity.It'simportantbecausethereisnothingelselikeit. 2017END OFYEARIMPACTREPORTTHEYEAROFYES Over3500studentscompletedTheLionFoundationYoung EnterpriseScheme(YES)in2017.Theylaunchedmore than830companieswiththesupportof200teachers andover1600businessjudgesandmentors. YESprovidesanentrepreneurialexperience tohelpstudentsdevelop21stcentury skillsinreal-worldsituationsby workingtotheirstrengths. AfterparticipatinginYES70% of studentsaremoreinterestedin startingtheirownbusiness. 85% ofYESstudentsfelt betterpreparedtomake decisionsfor theirfuture. 85% alsosaidthattheirpersonal confidenceincreasedasaresult ofparticipatinginYES. Problem solving,team work,leadership andcommunicationarethetopskillsthat studentsidentifiedimprovinginby participatinginYES.

YESIN THEREGIONS Ourregionaldeliverypartnersenable YEStobeofferedwithfullsupportfor teachersandstudentsrightacross thecountry. Thankyoutoalltheorganisations andRegionalCoordinatorswho madethispossiblein2017.

2017END OFYEARIMPACTREPORT YES TEAM PROFILE AlmaandTheodoralaunchedDiversityTreethroughYES withtheaim toinspirethePoriruaCommunitytoputaside difference and make inclusivenessa modelforfuture generations.Thestudentsdesigned,produced and sold long-sleevedtopsintimeforparticipantsandsupporters ofthePoriruaPasifikaPolyfest. TheyenjoyedalltheopportunitiesthatYEShadtooffer. Theirconfidenceandself-beliefflourished.Theyattended Entrepreneurs in Action (EIA),pitched at events and connected with a variety of business people who encouragedandsupportedthem. Afterattending EIA and being inspired by theirYES experienceAlmaandTheodorasigneduptoattendThe PasifikaStartUpWeekend.Theyweretheonlystudentsat theeventbutwhentheypitchedtheirYESidea,nervesand uneasevanishedandmagichappened. StartUpWeekendorganiser,DaveMoskovitzsaidabout theteamspitch,“Justwow,wow,wow.Youstoleallofthe mentors'heartsworking onsuchanimportantproblem with such incredible aroha. I willnever forget your impassionedcry:\"Thereisnoroom forracism inPorirua!!\"- that's etched permanently in my memory in the best possible way,and would have to be one ofthe most memorablemomentsfrom my26startupweekends.” OnthebackoftheirsuccessattheStartupweekend,the girls successfully applied forplaces atVenture Up to continue their entrepreneurialjourney.Theodora was awarded a Porirua City CouncilScholarship offering internshipwithlocalbusinessesandfundstohelpwithher completeherbusinessdegree.ShealsowonaW hitireia NewZealandscholarshiptosupporthertertiarystudy.

INTERNATIONALOPPORTUNITIESSA~O PAULO Through participating in ourEntrepreneursin Action weekendseight studentswereselectedtotraveltoSao~Paulo,Brazilincollaborationwith theLatinAmericanCentreofAsia-PacificExcellence(CAPEs). Thestudentswereofferedtheopportunitytogrow theirunderstandingof business,entrepreneurship and Brazilian culture.Overeightdays the studentsparticipatedinworkshopsandbusinesschallenges.Theyattended meetingswithlocalentreprenuersand globalorganisationssuchasAD Instruments,NZTE,and4YOU2. Aidan-PaulEneleSamasoni-Tukuitongafrom MarcellinCollegewasoneof thestudentswho travelled to Brazil.W hen discussing thetrip hesaid, “Entrepreneurshipistheopportunityforpeopletodosomethingmeaningful andcreateaworthwhileimpact”. The studentsdescribed theirweekin Brazilasa trip ofa lifetime.By immersingthemselvesinanewculturetheywereabletoreturnhomewitha newperspectiveandunderstandingofinternationalbusiness. “Neverfallin love with the ideathatyoucomeupwith. 2017END OFYEARIMPACTREPORT ROAMING TEACHERS Ourroaming teachersare the superstars who help grow teacher expertise and confidencetodeliverBusinessStudiesand NCEAqualificationsinanenterprisingway. W ecurrentlyhave6roamingteachers in5regionsacrossthecountry.In2017 they provided 1:1 support to 146 teachersandhelped4245students. “Invaluable. Expert advice, marking the business plan, alwayswillingtovisit,listened wellandgaveexcellentadvice.” W hatourteachersthink: “W heretostart?Wewouldnothavebeen abletogaintheamazingsuccessesthat we did withoutourregionalRoaming Teacher.TheirassistancewiththeNCEA componentwasinvaluable.”

THETRUESUPERHEROESEveryyearwegetthechancetoworkwithsomanybrilliantteachersandEmmaO’Riordanfrom ManurewaCollegeisoneofthose.Shewasthe2017 recipientoftheSirJamesFletcherAward forthemostinspiringteacher.Hercolleague Leanne Gibson said “Emma has great beliefin ourstudents’capabilities,and a clearvision (which she has proved inpractice)ofhow involvingandengagingstudentsinYESprogrammescanlifttheirexpectations,confidenceandachievement.W eneedmoreeducatorswiththevision,mindsetandpracticeofEmma.”

2017END OFYEARIMPACTREPORTRANGITAHIIN BUSINESSHekaikeiakuringabusinesschallengeisa3-dayexperientialprogrammecontextualisedforMaoristudents.282rangitahiattendedthechallengesin5regionsacrosstheNorthIsland.We asked the students to self-assess whatthe challengetaughtthem.90% 82% 83% 66% learntalotaboutbusiness openedtheireyes becamemore providedideas toopportunities confident abouttheir futurepathways Iwouldliketoseethe kindoflearningand engagementthatIsaw inthechallengetobe happeningallthetime inmyclassroom.Inmy classroom thelearning iscontrivedand assessmentdriven,this learningwasdrivenby theenthusiasm ofthe students. -DeborahMcKillop Teacher|OpotikiCollege
