Nuclear Arms Race 1945-1990 After the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, and the soviet development of nuclears arms. By 1949 the USA and the Soviet union were in a deterrence with producing nuclear weapons. ● Deterrence

Iron Curtain Speech 1946 The iron curtain speech or also known as the sinews of peace, was a speech given by winston churchill at westminster college. Churchill's speech was to highlight the facts and dangers of the soviet union in america. ● Collective Security

Marshall Plan 1948 The Marshall Plan was a $13-billion dollar aid plan put into place by the US secretary of state George Marshall. The marshall plan was offered to all countries of europe that had been devastated by war, regardless if they were democratic or communist. The marshall plan was implemented to stop other european countries from shifting to communism. ● Expansionism

Berlin Blockade / Airlift 1948 The berlin Blockade was the Soviet Union's response to the west giving germany and other european countries forgien aid (Marshall plan). The Soviet Union completely cut off all rail, road and canal access to west berlin. This left around 2.5 Million people without food,medicine,fuel or electricity. After a while eventually the west implemented air drops into west berlin to give people the supplies they needed. ● Collective Security

NATO Formed 1949 The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed on April 4th, 1949 in washington D.C. The NATO agreement was signed by 12 countries from North America to Western Europe. The agreement was formed to stop the expanding Soviet Union, Forbidding the revival of nationalist military in europe, and encouraging european political integration. ● Diplomacy

Korean War 1950-1953 The korean war was a small conflict between South and North korea. At the time both were ruled by dictators they both had different views on economic sides of things. The war itself started when 75 thousand north korean’s crossed the 38th parallel. Then the united states sent troops in representing for south korea. ● Proxy Wars

Vietnam War 1955-1975 The vietnam war was started when north vietnam was under communist rule and south vietnam was under democratic rule. In the height of the conflict nixon sent american troops into south korea to help fight the communist vietnam. ● Proxy War

Hungarian Revolt 1956 The hungarian revolution began when the revolutions leader Imre Nagy became premier in 1956, he then declared neutrality and appealed to the united nations for support but were reluctant to help because of global confrontation. On Nov 4th the soviet union invaded hungary and then latest in 1958 killed Nagy for treason ● Sphere of influence

Berlin Wall Installed 1961 As world war two ended the europe countries split up germany into two different sides, with tensions rising during the cold war. The soviet union created the berlin wall to split up west and east Germany which had two different political views. ● Collective Security

Cuban Missile Crisis 1962 The cuban missile crisis was a 13 day standoff between the United States and Soviet Union. The conflict started when the US found missiles in cuba pointed at the united states. Kennedy’s response he put a naval blockade around cuba while they negotiated a deal with the Soviet Union. In the end they came to an agreement. ● The soviet union would remove its missiles from cuba ● The united states would promise not to invade cuba and withdraw its missiles from turkey. ● Brinkmanship

Non-Proliferation Treaty 1968 The Non-Proliferation treaty was the treaty signed by the United Kingdom, the United States, the Soviet Union, and 59 other countries. The main goal of the treaty was that every country that signed agreed not to assist other countries in obtaining or producing nuclear weapons. ● Diplomacy

Czechoslovakia Revolt 1968 The czechoslovakia revolution also called as the Prague spring, under alexander dubcek’s control first he granted the press greater freedom, also rehabilitated victims of political purges, and revised the constitution to guarantee civil rights. Stalin and other warsaw pact countries and saw this as equivalent to counter revolution. ● liberation

Detente 1971 Was the period of time of improved relations between the United States and the soviet union. This time was great for de-escalating the tension between the soviet union and the united states. It opened up trade and then it came to a halt with the watergate scandal.

Tiananmen Square 1989 The tiananmen square protests were about calling for free speech, democracy, and free press in china. The protesters were made up of mostly students, the cause of tiananmen square was the death of a former communist party leader Hu Yaobang, who worked to introduce democratic reform in china. ● Liberation

Fall of the berlin wall 1989 On Nov 9th, 1989, the cold war was coming to an end a spokesman from the east berlin communist party had said in a press release that citizens were free to cross between the wall. Over 2 million people went to west germany that weekend to celebrate, shortly after that bulldozers and cranes started to take down the wall.
