Intro duc tion Samui Elephant Kingdom was founded by Chokchai Rueangsri who grew up in a family that owned and worked with elephants for generations. From a young age Chokchai had felt a deep connection with the elephants and always felt that there was another option for these beautiful animals. Something stirred in him and after much research and greater understanding came the realization that elephants in captivity, and exploited for tourism, are desperately unhappy. Added to this the stress of their unhappiness lessens their immune system and they become sick and depressed. Time and money was spent over the next 3 years en- suring the very best living space for the elephants would mean that they were no longer chained, no longer in service and could start to develop their instinctive behaviors with- out fear.
