OM UPDATEAs we head toward the mid-October, wecontinue to be ahead of our new titletarget, marking off an average of 133 perday against our original target of 133. Wehave also processed a significant numberof bulk dealings this month, includingstarting the CV Rothesay Lifeapplications, which makes the new titleoutput all the more impressive. It will bemore difficult to stay ahead of the newtitle target this week as we don't haveovertime this weekend, but I'm confidentwe'll be able to continue our fantasticprogress towards the end of the month. We are also slightly ahead of target as anAgency, as we all work towardsachieving the service standard by 31stMarchI know your engagement contacts willhave been talking about the Civil ServicePeople Survey this week. I've talkedabout engagement with the majority ofpeople over the last couple of months, butone conversation struck me this week.Someone said that they had not completed the survey in the past as they didn'thave anything bad to say. To be honest, I can completely understand where theywere coming from, as we always say if you have issues put them in the survey. Ihope you believe me when I say that we will do our best to resolve any issues youhave, but I would also ask that if you think we are moving in the right direction, bothlocally and nationally, please bear that in mind when answering the questions. Fancy a Game of Golf?Tired of running? Prefer to spoil a good walk instead? We have the answer…The Coventry Golf Society. We are currently seeking new members to join us on our monthly trips aroundthe golf courses of the Midlands. Competitions this year have been played inRugby, Coventry, Meriden, Stratford and Hollywood in Birmingham. Other thanthe annual Furneaux national golf competition, travelling distance is usuallykept to within a 25 mile radius of our office. We have numerous drivers whocan help with lifts if required. It is not as expensive as you might think. Individual rounds cost between £10 -£20 and although a set of golf clubs can be expensive, we currently have astarter set with carry bag available at a price of £25…absolute bargain! We play 10 friendly, yet highly competitive (as those of you have played 5-a-side or are part of the running club can attest to) competitions per year. Thecriteria for applying could not be simpler.1) Can you swing a golf club without destroying the golf course… actuallyscratch that, as most of our current society members can’t!What is the punchline to this well know golfing joke “Why do golfers alwayscarry two pairs of trousers with them?”Answer the above and any enquiries to:Andy Crowther (Treasurer)Nathan Reynolds (Handicap Secretary)Scott Habberley (Chairman)Andy Crowther

I got wheels… Wheels of Steel There’s nothing quite like zipping down Alderminster Hill at 45 KPH with only a couple of millimetres of tyre tread keeping you upright. Something I much prefer to sliding along the tarmac, but more of that later. Riding back up the same road is not so much fun but, there again, that’s what gears are for. I’ve been cycling to work, on a more or less regular basis, for a couple of years now after taking advantage of an interest free £500 loan the Land Registry kindly offers to encourage people to… errr…. cycle to work. (see https://intranet.landregistry.gov.uk/task/bike-to-work-loan/ ). There’s a fact, often banded about by cycling folk, that any commute under 6 miles is actually quicker by bike than by car. It’s certainly cheaper than running a car, better for you and the environment. So why don’t more of us do it? Click Here to read the Full Article Kev Bailey

VISUAL ART THERAPYIt has been shown that there is a connection between creativeoccupations and people living with mental illness. Though while mentalillness may aid creativity, it doesn’t have to be present for creativity toexist. It is suggested that those with mental illnesses, see the worlddifferently to others; to see things that others cannot. The creative artshave been used in therapy for those suffering or recovering frommental illness. While the theme here is mainly the visual arts, it shouldbe noted that the ‘creative arts’ also includes dance, comedy, actingand writing. So many current and historical creative figures have beenaffected by mental illness (though this should be balanced by thelarger number that don’t). What is visual art therapy? Visual art therapy involves using different mediums such as paint, clay, chalk and photography to create something that expresses yourself or your feelings, when you would find it hard to do so otherwise. You can then discuss the image(s) with your therapist.Click Here to Keith Busbyread the Full Article

THE HISTCoventry’s Victoria CrossI feel safe in saying that almost everyone knows that the highest award forgallantry/bravery in the face of the enemy, that you can be awarded as a member of hermajesty’s forces is the Victoria Cross.Equally, unless you have been living under a rock most people will have seen theceremonies recently held in Belgium to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the 3rdBattle ofYpres in 1917 (more commonly known as the Battle of Passchendaele).Just over a week ago (4/10/2017) it was exactly 100 years since the only Coventry bornsoldier won his VC.This was Arthur Hutt, born in Earlsdon on 12/2/1889. He grew up to become a worker inCourtaulds on the Foleshill Road. It was here that he joined his local Territorial Militia andwas called up in 1914 to join the 7th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He went toFrance with the regiment in 1915 and was involved in various battles, notably the Somme in1916.Come 1917 and Arthur is fighting in Belgium when his action occurs. The following is hiscitation for the award of his VC;“No. 267110 Pte. Arthur Hutt, E. War. E. (Earlsdon, Coventry). For most conspicuous braveryand initiative in attack, when all the officers and non-- commissioned officers of No. 2platoon having-, become casualties, Pte. Hutt took command, of and led forward theplatoon. He was held up by a strong post on his right, but immediately ran forward alone infront of the platoon and shot the officer and three men in the post, causing between fortyand. fifty others to surrender. Later, realizing that he had pushed too far, he withdrew hisparty. He personally covered the withdrawal by sniping the enemy, killing a number andthen carried back a badly wounded man and put him under shelter. Pte. Hutt thenorganised and consolidated his position, and learning that some wounded men were lyingout and likely to become prisoners if left there, no stretcher bearers being available, hewent out and carried in four wounded men under heavy fire.”Arthur returned from Belgium in December 1917 to receive his medal from the King andfrom there came back to Coventry where a civic reception was held in his honour. He rejoined Courtaulds in 1919 and retired from there. He married Alice in 1913 and thenwent on to have children. He died on 14/4/1954 and was cremated in Canley, where thefuneral was given full military honours. In the War Memorial Park you can find a granite slabwith his citation on it, honouring Coventry’s unique VC winner. The Victoria’s Cross at this point is missing… Stuart Hadden

ORY PAGE A Brief History of Coventry Part 1. Although there is evidence of Romans all around Coventry, most notably at Baginton, where the 1st century Lunt Fort stood, and the proximity to the Roman roads of Watling Street and The Fosse Way, no evidence of a Roman occupation of the area where the city now stands has ever been unearthed. It is more likely that Coventry is of Saxon origin, particularly as the –ley endings of place names such as Allesley, Keresley, Corley and Binley indicates an area of a clearing in woodland (the ancient Forest of Arden) in Saxon times. The name Coventry is also thought to have originated at this time, from Cofa’s Tree, possibly the site of a place of worship or maybe even a boundary marker for land owned by a local Saxon named Cofa (there was no Land Registry or Ordnance Survey in Saxon times, sadly). The first person in history with connections to Coventry is St Osburga, an abbess who founded a nunnery in around 700AD, thought to be around the area of Hill Top close to the area of the modern cathedrals, although again no archaeological evidence has ever been found to support this. It is thought that King Cnut’s invading army may have destroyed this in the early 11th century. The earliest definite date in Coventry’s history is 1043, when Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and his wife, Godiva (she of the infamous naked riding of a horse), founded a monastery dedicated to St Mary. In the early 12th century Coventry had a motte-and-bailey castle (little more than a defended mound of earth), evidenced by the names Broadgate, Bayley Lane and Castle Yard around the area of the present St Mary’s Guild Hall.
