hy I hung up my shingle and the crowds came pouring in.... “The reason I started my own practice was because I was tired ofWtreating patients as just another number.”My childhood dream: Since I was a little girl, my dream was to be a doctor. My dream came true when I joined a busy medical practice after graduatingmedical school. I was thrilled! However, I soon realized that practicingmedicine in this era was about quantity not quality. I knew that therehad to be a better way to spend my day at work rather than just makingit about seeing the most patients, scheduling tests, procedures, and writingprescriptions. I wanted to get to know my patients as people and not just astheir disease. So, I did what any determined physician would do – I hung upmy shingle for my own practice. As an entrepreneur, I wanted the focus ofmy practice to be about attaining optimal wellness and disease preventionas opposed to waiting for patients to get sick and then providing treatment.I have been called a supermom, celebrity doctor, and integrativephysician, but I call myself an entrepreneur. My practice follows nomold and integrates “whole-ism” vs. “ill-ism.” There is no greaterpleasure than hitting that floor Monday morning knowing someone’slife will improve because of what I doThinking outside the box: Traditional western medicine has always taken years to catch up with the best of easternmedical practices. For example, western doctors have (for years) dismissed the benefits of probiotics and now it’s mainstreamin treating multiple gastrointestinal or G.I. diseases. Medical professionals viewed the “gluten world” as black and white.Patients either had celiac disease (an autoimmune disorder that damages the small intestine from eating gluten) or they didnot when in fact today, “non-celiac gluten sensitivity” is more commonly accepted and even has its own diagnosis code.Getting the word out: I have been blessed to have been on multiple television and media outlets bringing awareness onhow to achieve optimal health. I educate patients on eating whole foods, the benefits of probiotics, and rebuilding healthand wellness from the inside out. This concept has resonated with my patients and as a result has helped pave the way fortargeting obesity because the G.I. tract and obesity go hand-in-hand. When the intestinal lining is inflamed, deficient in thegood bacteria, overtaken by an abundance of the wrong bacteria, and has a leaky lining it wreaks havoc on the rest of thebody. Even further, G.I. imbalance is now being linked to various non-G.I. issues like brain fog, fatigue, pain, bloating, andweight gain which can be debilitating to everyday living for some people.Dad’s advice: My father is also a physician and he would always tell me, “when you graduate from medical school, the se-cret to being a good doctor is listening to your patient.” Such a simple concept seemed idealistic but turned out to be thebest advice I have ever received. It was too often ignored due to a lack of time combined with the financial constraintsthat modern medicine has placed on healthcare providers. Fortunately for me, this is something I will never compromise. Su Sachar, M.D. 9 Double-Board Certified– GastroenterologistTorrance & West Hollywood, CA • www.susacharmd.com

George Rojas, Empowering EntrepreneurArticle Written by Michelle Melendrez At 33, fashion expert and entrepreneur, George Rojas Photo by Jonathan Perezis making his dreams a reality. “Since an early age I was stylingfamily and friends. I looked at each individual as anopportunity to express myself and at the age of 26, I launched ahigh end fashion jewelry line business called GorgeousGoddess. It was a very special moment in my life despite allthat I have been through; I was being given a second chance tomake a name for myself in the fashion industry. I wouldn’t bewhere I am today without my husband Jorge, who has givenme his unconditional love and support for the past nine years. He’s my best friend, my traveling partner, and my soul mate. Mymother Debbie is my rock, my biggest supporter, and of coursethe original Gorgeous Goddess herself. She inspires a lot of mystyling creations. I believe that everyone is unique and shouldset themselves apart by creative expression – go ahead and wearthat daring statement piece or wear something simple if that iswho you are. Own it! That is why I love fashion because thereare so many ways you can express yourself.” It is more than fashion that this visionary has found by doing the unexpected and taking risks. “I want everywoman to feel gorgeous and empowered,” says George. “I started with doing jewelry boutiques and over time mybusiness grew all because I helped a few women feel beautiful. A piece of jewelry truly holds that much power that canmake an ordinary woman go from simple to fierce. My business has allowed me to empower women by making themfeel like a goddess. Over the years, I’ve built friendships by getting to know each person I work with. We laugh andhave a great time. This is what sets me apart from other stylists and why my clients love working with me.” When George is not busy promoting Gorgeous Goddess, you can find him always scouting for the next bigbreakthrough talent. He has styled awe-inspiring looks both on and off the stage for TV celebrities, artists, andmodels for numerous fashion projects and red carpet events. He has collaborated with several different organizationson photoshoots and has worked on various television projects that involve co-producing or making guest appearancesfor events such as Batalla de la Belleza/Original Make-Up Artist & Hair Competition, Big Brother, American Idol,Hollywood Today Live, Music TV Awards and LA Fashion Week. George recently participated as a pageant judge forMiss Diamond Bar 2016. “An integral part of who I am is the charity work I am actively involved with. My grandmother, who was abreast cancer survivor of over 25 years, is my muse for being involved with numerous charities. Her strength and willto fight the battle against breast cancer taught me a very important life lesson. Transformations are not alwaysintentional, but often times necessary. This necessity to improve one another inspired me to improve myself from myprevious troublesome tendencies to reveal a different kind of strength I never knew existed within me. It’s the bestfeeling in the world knowing that you gave someone the best day of his or her life just by simply giving someone yourtime.” It’s no surprise that this talented stylist has taken the fashion world by storm and is sought after by an array ofcelebrities, artists, models, and producers. George Rojas, stylist turned entrepreneur, has most recently partnered up with producer and cast member ofBravo’s Vanderpump Rules, Peter Madrigal, and Levis Nacaj, a successful business owner and real-estate developer, tosuccessfully establish and launch Amaré Magazine. The goal of Amaré Magazine is to promote businesses, non-profitorganizations, and individual enlightenment, “I enjoy seeing my friends succeed and love helping people realize theirfull potential!” 11

Peter Madriga Journey to Hollywood has been one of courage in overcoming of being unafraid to follow dreams and making them a re He spent much of his unconventional upbringing in San Isidro, Texas, where he was homeschooled as a child. The eldest in a family of seven, Peter grew up in a traditional household, watching classic movies, and being inspired by unparalleled actors such as Peter O’Toole and Anthony Hopkins. It was his childhood dream to be a big screen actor in Hollywood. “I knew from an early age what I wanted to do with my life,” he says. “I told my mom I wanted to come to L.A. back in 1996 when I was 13 years old.” He played football in his high school years, but although people perceived him as an athlete, his personal love was for the arts and acting. This passion soon came into the light. Rather than upholding the family tradition of going to the University of Texas A&M, Peter opted for the smaller college of Blinn in Austin Texas. It was at Blinn where he continued to break expectations, dropping football and a law degree in favor of stage drama. The criticism he received did not hit far from home when Peter went a step further and left his hometown in South Texas for Los Angeles. He was a stranger in a big city, but he wasn’t new to hardships. While his father was a notable lawyer, Peter did not grow up in riches. He even spoke of a time during his college years when he didn’t have any money to pay for food. He was living off of cans of tuna. “No one recognized me when I came home that summer because I had lost so much weight. That experience taught me that I could survive anything. Anything thrown my way, I could survive it.” He had only his dreams and determination to push him forward. He entered the University of Southern California and received a graduate degree in Theater Arts in 2008. Between the hustle of starting a new life and keeping up with grades, Peter found work as a salesman for Abercrombie and Fitch and Banana Republic. Today, he works as a bartender at Sur. He adds a little of his style into everything he brews, including his own unique beverages.14 Photographer by Erik Johnson

al The person he credits for having recognized his potential as the top manager is his boss, Lisa Vanderpump.g adversity, eality. “She made a huge impact on me. She brought me from being like a kid and wanting to do bet- ter as a person. She basically steered me in the right direction.” It wasn’t long after his promotion that he landed a spot on the hit TV series, Vanderpump Rules. Fans view him as the one with the leveled head and one of the more likable members of the cast. Much of the show’s success is due to fact that it offers a true depiction of what really goes on in their personal lives. “We’re even crazier off camera. The show sometimes doesn’t even capture what really goes on behind the scenes,” Peter says. Peter has now branched out into different corporations and made for himself his own brands. “I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur. I’ve always wanted to be involved in the Hollywood lifestyle, and I finally found my knack as a producer.” In 2014, he partnered with Levis Nacaj and produced a TV pilot called “Social Status”. Peter partnered with Levis a second time in 2015, along with George Rojas, and the trio formed Amare Magazine. “Our goal is to create a magazine that communicates to both sexes equally. There are too many magazines out there that communicate solely to either one or the other.” He is also the face of Hairo, maker of all-natural hair styling products with a base that consists solely of water. Unlike many other hair brands, Hairo doesn’t use sulfate or suffocate the hair follicles. While he has seen much success in the business world, Peter’s overall goal is to be a Hollywood producer of big, unique movies. Such films will soon include The Raiven Destiny, an epic sci-fi fantasy which he plans to have made into a trilogy. When it comes to investing in a project, he looks for uniqueness – “Whether it comes from the name or the idea behind it; the thought process and the amount of work that has gone into the project.” Being motivated by visionary filmmaking, Peter Madrigal’s aim is to have a positive impact on the Industry. He foresees produc ing films with optimistic themes and personal consequences; to fabricate movies that tell real stories. In a society that says follow your dreams, most everyone settles for mediocre. Peter has proven to be an acceptation, having stepped out from his small beginnings in rural Texas into the heart of one of the biggest cities in America. His journey to Hollywood is a tale of hard work and perseverance, and it continues. With a strong foundation below him, the sky is the limit. The Vanderpump Rules star, who has always done his own thing, is well on his way to becoming one of Hollywood’s most versatile entrepreneurs. ~ Regina Eden 15

Photo Credit: Jared Rubin, @JaredRubinPhotography The old adage “strength in numbers” couldn’t ring more true for the three creative minds behind LA’s hottest and fastest-growing awards show, celebrating all things reality. For the past four years, producers Kristen Moss, Andrew Ward and John Barra have been the catalyst behind this yearly anticipation and igniting over 1 million votes annually. It happens one night in Hollywood where reality television’s biggest stars, producers and show creators come out to celebrate the genre in a way only fans can appreciate: The Reality TV Awards. Last year, the awards reached over 80 million social media impressions and attracted cast members from major shows from Survivor to Big Brother, Dance Moms to The Deadliest Catch, Hell’s Kitchen to MasterChef Jr. and everything in between with close to 200 reality production companies represented each year. The brainchild began in 2012 when Kristen Moss and Andrew Ward found a lack of acknowledgement for reality television professionals in front and behind the cameras during LA’s springtime awards season. They created the “We Work in Reality Television” group, which now has over 1,000 members and is the sole academy who narrows down hundreds of entries to the final 5-6 nominees in each category. These range from Best Production Company, Reality King/Queen to Most Shocking Moment, Heartfelt Moment, Villain, Best Performance, Best Competition Show and New/Returning Casts to name a few. In the early spring of 2013, Emmy-award winning producer John Barra joined the team as Supervising Talent Producer and Awards Producer, solidifying the triumvirate of creators, and bringing over 500 reality professionals to the 1st awards show at the famed Greystone Manor that April. The 2014 awards moved to Supper club with 800 attendees and then over 1,000 at the Avalon-Hollywood in 2015, where it will continue to be its permanent home. Last year’s awards were also sponsored by Mohegan Sun and Audio Networks. In 2016, their turning-point year, the Reality TV Awards are now supported and represented by leading production company, Bischoff Hervey Entertainment (BHE), powered by Watermelon Entertainment, and the show will now happen in the fall, on September 14, 2016, a week before the biggest television awards show of them all, the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards. Kristen, Andrew and John have been and are all actively working in reality television, on all sides: casting, production, development, post production and talent production. Their entrepreneurial spirit and deep love and respect for the reality television community helped this “little engine that could” grow from a literal budget of zero to a sponsored and now network deal-seeking annual event. For more information on the Reality TV Awards go to www.realitytelevisionawards.com and follow them on social media at @RealityAwardsTV on Twitter and Instagram.26

Lisa Vanderpump:A Woman Whose Heart Is Bigger Than Her SuccessBy Joshua PayberahLisa Vanderpump has found success in many realms. Known for her appearances on Vanderpump Rules andthe Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Lisa is also a restaurateur, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Still, shehas not allowed her stardom to alter her genuine personality. What makes Lisa’s spirit shine through her flawless skin is her determination to leverage heraccomplishments to affect positive changes in the world. I had a chance to interview Lisa, and in doing so, Idiscovered that she has been dedicated to her ambitions from an early age.“I planned to study dance, but I got my first acting job at seventeen, so I took the opportunity and made a firmdecision not to go to college,” she explained. The decision proved to be a wise one, by the time she was only twenty-one, Lisa had one-hundred-and-twen-ty commercials on her resume. She even managed to purchase her own home. Her lifestyle became awhirlwind of work. Her goals were set and a serious relationship was the farthest thing from her mind. Thenthat moment came when Ken Todd walked into her life and she knew this was the man she was meant to bewith.“When I met him,” she explained, “suddenly I didn’t care about traveling the world anymore, bookingcommercials, photo-shoots, etc. I just fell madly in love. My relationship was the most important thing in mylife.”Lisa married Ken just six weeks after they met. She gave birth to the couple’s first child, Pandora, at the age oftwenty-five. Taking on the role of motherhood to Pandora and Max, their son, was beyond everyachievement she’d ever experienced.Lisa and Ken formed a power couple with their goals in sync.Lisa recalls, “I was already very much involved in the aesthetical side of my husband’s business—designingand creating. We had a total of twenty-nine of the better known restaurants, bars and clubs in London.”One bar in particular, Jewel at Piccadilly Circus, was actually designed by Lisa and Ken.“My husband and I work closely; we discuss things, and make decisions together. I suppose we influence eachother, really. And to that end, I suppose my husband had the greatest impact on my life. I’mactually married to someone I have the utmost respect for; someone I’m lucky enough to have him choose meto be his partner in life.”Even after marriage and starting a family, the pace inLisa’s life hasn’t slowed.“Normally, I’m a workaholic. And these days I want tobe involved in absolutely everything, all aspects of thebusiness, including food and recipes.”Although she has found extraordinary success in her Betsy Newman Photographylife, Lisa’s entrepreneurial spirit continues to tugat her. “I guess in terms of business goals, I’d like toexpand the Vanderpump brand name, maybe have aperfume. I’ve accomplished all my previous businessgoals and I’ve achieved more than I ever imagined.”30

The causes closest to Lisa’s heart are even Betsy Newman Photographybigger than her business aims.“One day, I’d like to look back and reflect onwhat I did to implement change in the worldthat I can be proud of. I believe that celebritystatus comes with a certain amount ofresponsibility to give back and advocate on be-half of causes you feel strongly about—to driveawareness. For instance, I’m a dogactivist. With over one million followers you canretweet something today and driveawareness to the dog cruelty atrocities on theopposite side of the globe. Sara Dawn Passion: A strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something. When interviewing Sara there was an overwhelming aroma in the air that reflected what so many strive for in our profession… Passion. Sara Kranke, a Registered Nurse, explained “I love being a nurse. I am exposed to people during their most vulnerable times. People who are sharing moments with me, a complete stranger, because they believe that I am there to help them- and I am.” With watery eyes, she went on to explain her deep “gratitude” for the opportunity that she has been given. Of course, she had to add in a little charismatic cynicism “no career or job is perfect. There are those days when my soul just feels drained or sucked dry from being over worked and from patients who, due to their unfortunate circumstance, take out their frustrations on me.” I am sure that everyone can relate in some way, but I really got a laugh out of the nickname she used to describe these individuals that she so graciously called “Energy Sucking Vampires.” She did recover from her dip into the half empty glass with a fresh pour of positivity… “Look, we all have a choice. I chose to dedicate most of my time to helping others in need, either physically or emotionally, and there is no greater gift than seeing the change in another because of you,” while at the same time placing her hands to her heart in prayer. The more the interview progressed, thinking about the toll that it takes false sense that it would give me there was a sense of calmness and on our body.” self-esteem did I really learn that pure comfort that resonated from fitness as a sport is the most her. “I have not always liked “Our bodies are intricate vessels critical and self-deprecating sport myself, “ she expressed, “ only that if treated well can carry us there is. Funk Zone FashionQ&A We created Funk Zone Fashion with the goal to become the ultimate yoga pants and fitness apparel designer and manufacturer. All of our products have a unique edgy fashionable style with an emphasis on adaptability so that all garments can be used for high intensity activity, travel wear, business wear, or everyday leisure-wear. With our unique style, material, and customer engagement we aim to empower people (especially woman) to promote a healthy and positive lifestyle. What was the inspiration behind setting up the business? We have both always been very passionate about fitness, a healthy lifestyle, and fashion. We put that all together to create a successful business. We could see how yoga apparel is becoming more like “daily wear” for so many women. We found that what was previously available lacked a stylish edge. We envisioned a business that moved yoga pants and fitness apparel to a new level of fashion and style. Why the name “Funk Zone Fashion?” The name comes from an area in Santa Barbara called “Funk Zone.” It has become one of the hottest neighborhoods in town where we often spend magical Sunday afternoons with close friends and it’s also where we first discussed our goals for our lives and ideas for a fitness leisure wear brand. What sets your products apart from the competition? There are some great products available out there but we were hearing a lot of people say that they wanted a more stylish edge with their fitness wear. Yoga pants from some manufacturers seem to be available in any color of your choice - as long as it’s black! With so many women choosing fitness wear for their everyday attire we saw the need for more stylish appar- el that could not only be paired with gym wear but also something that was suitable to wear with a business jacket in the office or casual wear on a romantic date. We’ve maintained the highest level of design and production for our products so they really are the ultimate yoga pants. Why do your customers buy from you? Our customer’s profiles range from young teens who just buy outfits for the style to fitness profession- als who demand a lot from their apparel. We believe customers are becoming more aware of the ethics behind a company and are happier to invest in products from businesses who have an ethical foundation. What is your design process? How and where are your products manufactured? Our design process is a collaborative process between Rishalia Cut (CEO) and myself, Michelle Nouraei (COO). We discuss what we want in a specific piece of leisure wear and then engage a large number of fitness professionals from Yoga instructors, Cross-fitters, runners, gymnasts, and just friends who we feel our apparel would appeal to. We investigate what potential buyers would like to have in a yoga pant. Our manufacturing process again is a collaboration, however we oversee every part of the production from the fabric selection to design patterns. What challenges did you have to overcome in getting the business up and running? We had certain demands that were non-negotiable, qual- ity was out main focus. Many manufactures are prepared to compromise on quality to reduce production costs and increase profits, we were not prepared to do that. We tried a large number of production facilities before we committed. Neither myself, nor Rishalia, are from a fashion or clothing background so everything we did came from a customer perspective. This meant we had a sharp learning curve but also meant it would ensure our products were designed with what our customers expressed were their top priorities when shopping for a yoga pant. What are your business goals for funk zone fashion? We see Funk Zone Fashion becoming a major player in the fitness apparel market. A lot depends on distribution and marketing but we are sure that the growth will be global. What particular skills do you and your business partner have that suit this business? Rishalia Cut has a strong business and financial background with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from University California of Santa Barbara, and a Master’s Degree in Organiza- tion and Management from Antioch University of Santa Barbara. Rishalia’s experience is in the corporate world. On the other hand, Michelle Nouraei brings her knowledge of fitness and Lifestyle. She is a fitness trainer and coach and has extensive knowledge and experi- ence of the demands within the fitness industry. This experience combines with education in Nursing, provides a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle. Michelle is also a successful fitness model and NPC Bikini competitor. How is your business ethical? To us it’s important that everything about the business is ethical. From the raw materials used in the fabric to the people who are engaged in the manufacturing process. We are working towards removing all plastic from everything, sometimes this is as simple as changing from plastic hang tags to pieces of cotton and using recyclable paper in packing and shipping. Any manufacturer could cut a large sum from the manufacturing process by moving production overseas. However, we won’t do this as we see the bigger picture. The consumption of fuel for transportation and low paid ’slave’ labor doesn’t contribute to an ethical business. Where will Funk Zone fashion be 5 years from now? We have a strong business plan to grow the company over the next year, while maintaining margins that mean we can offer great customer service, prices, and quality. We are expanding our distribution network by paring with independent yoga studios and a selection of unique high end apparel outlets long-term. Eventually we plan to be available in larger department stores to give us wider exposure to a more varied market. 5 Steps To Go From Idea To Empire It’s the spring of 2000 and I’m sipping a latte at a diminutive diner on the upper west side of Manhattan. Across from me sits my gregarious agent who’s laugh ricochets off the back wall and onto 86th street like a foghorn in a hallway. “Listen, they loved your rendition of Chief Cook and Bottle Washer, but just couldn’t make sense of your brown boots,” he says with a suppressed chuckle. “It’s not funny”, I say with the earnestness of a child who’s doll’s just fallen in the mud. “I’m so disheartened. I wish I could be creative without needing approval.” Silently shifting from agent to friend and as if mystically transported beyond the sirens of New York City, he prophesies, “Jess, this business isn’t for most. Honestly, I can see you happy as a life coach in Santa Barbara.” You know those defining moments in life that slide past you in a mundane chat on a Sunday afternoon? Those moments that are only poignant when spotlighted through the veil of time? Yep, this was one of those. Hearing from my agent that Broadway diva wasn’t his vision of my future made my heart sink to my gut, but this divinely orchestrated idea never left the rotation of my daily thoughts. It grew on my soul like ivy on a cement wall, inching its way to the top. Entrepreneurship took almost a decade to become the motivating force of my life. The path’s been circuitous and continued; starting with private clients and leading to two thriving businesses. It’s cultivated gifts that I never knew were mine and connected me to a universal intelligence that inspires me to wake each morning with enthusiastic anticipation of creative contribution. Owning a business is a summit few realize, but for those who are willing, brings with it unparalleled fulfillment. Here Are 5 Steps That Can Take You From An Idea To An Empire… 1. Get Clear About Your Why. To keep your business moving forward you’ll need a sustainable fuel source. Force and manipulation are antiquated and rarely work for the long haul. Knowing your biggest why will inspire you to walk through any fire. As an exercise, ask yourself why you want to start a business. Your initial response may be something like hating your job or wanting more money. Ask yourself again. And then ask yourself again. Continue this process until you feel what I call, “the pull of Spirit”. Your deepest why will typically be altruistic. When you can tap into the Divine call of being of service to the greater good, the Universe will show you the way. 2. Interview Experts In Your Field. The best way to get started is to walk on a path that’s already paved with gold. Of course you’ll want to create your own unique business, but understanding successful structures will save you time and unnecessary drama. Make a list of all your heroes. Now be brave and reach out for a chat. You’ll be surprised by how many people jump at the chance to share their wisdom. Even a quick email exchange can provide brilliance. 3. Enroll An Accountability Partner. A friend who listens to your woes with love and kindness is valuable, but a partner who holds you to your word is priceless. Make sure to have at least one committed person in your life who’ll remind you of how strong and capable you are. They may be a friend, a peer or even a coach. Just be sure they’re more invested in your success than in your comfort. 4. Take Inspired Action. It’s easy to let the magnitude of starting a business overwhelm you into paralysis. And the truth is, there’s no way to know how it’ll all get done. So, I suggest you allow the Universe to lead you a step at a time. This is challenging for most of us who feel safety lies in control. But, when you allow for the full potential of universal intelligence to guide you, you’ll always take inspired action. 5. Create A Team. Your genius is limited. We’re all strong in some areas and weak in others. As a successful entrepreneur, your job is to know the difference. Then you’ll need to create a team of people who fill in your gaps. Art is in the details and each piece of the whole is equally important. If you choose wisely, your business will surpass your vision. If entrepreneurship is beckoning you, I invite you to let it lead you. The Universe needs more brave souls who are dedicated to making a difference.
