Editor's Note I have recently completed my 20th year as editor of this magazine. I'll always be grateful for this opportunity and for Wesleyan's willingness to entrust me with the assignment when I had never previously edited any magazine. I had a lot to learn in a hurry, and one of the first things I learned was that a magazine is perpetually a work in progress. It can be better. Always. But what does better actually mean? Is it a metric defined by reader interest, In the online world we're spoiled by the avalanche of data at our fingertips. We know exactly how many people have read a particular article or watched a video, and much more besides. The opposite is true in the world of our print magazine. Without extensive surveying don't worry you're not going to get a survey with every magazines, we have no idea how many people are reading a particular article. Wesleyan's occasional broad-based surveys have included a few questions about magazine readership and have consistently shown that the magazine is widely read by alumni and parents. That's comforting but doesn't provide much guidance for improving our work.

Best Work Of Art Rick Shaefer 16

Rick Shaefer I tend to always come back to the line work. I find what I respond to and admire in other artists, work, past or present, is usually the integrity of the line whether it's a single stroke or a mass of scribble in the shadows. If the marks are put down with validity and assurance they will resonate and the piece will vibrate. False or uneasy notes stand out and unsettle and even demoralize. A confident fluidity of movement and gesture is what is consciously and unconsciously felt and appreciated by the viewer. At least that is how I respond to a work. 18

As person and an artist, I must confess that I'm in a perpetual state of being lost. Often, I have a subtle, nagging feeling like I'm living in someone else's body, never fully in control, like I'm in a streaming movie where the audio and video aren't quite synced up properly. It's most likely the result of being too self-aware and self-critical, but I've been that way my entire life. Art is one of the few things that distract me from that sensation, allowing me to focus solely on the task at hand while offering temporary relief. Maria Nechaeva 19
