His wise leadershipand enormous prestige held the country together.I last met King Bhumibol in 2009, during the ASEAN Summit in Hua Hin, Thailand. He was a mostgracious host and took a close interest in ASEAN programmes to promote economic growth anddevelopment.On behalf of Singapore, I offer my deepest condolences to the Royal Family and people of Thailandon their sad loss. He was the longest reigning monarch born on Americansoil having reigned in Thailand for 70 years.In 1927, Prince Mahidol Adulyadej of Songkla cameto study Public Health at Harvard University with his wife Princess Srinagarindra who studiedchemistry and nutrition at Simmons College. On December 5 she gave birth to the King at MountAuburn Hospital in Cambridge.“It is with deep sadness that we learned of the King’s passing. He was a true leader in public healthissues and reigned with an ever deepening commitment to the people of Thailand,” says JeanetteClough, President & CEO of Mount Auburn Hospital. “We join with the people of Thailand both nearand far in expressing our sincerest condolences to the family of the King.”King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit visited the Hospital on July 7, 1960. He was quoted,“I am most happy on what I might call a homecoming,” upon his arrival. “It is something I dreamedof a long time and its realization brings great happiness.”156
