03 Chemsain Newsletter

MESSAGE FROM MANAGING DIRECTOR This issue of Chemsain Newsletter covers the months of January to March 2020. The delay was unavoidable as we have been restricted under the Movement Control Order (MCO) due to Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The MCO has been implemented from 18th March to 28th April 2020. The first Covid-19 case was reported to emerge in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The virus was unknown and people outside Wuhan did not know the seriousness of the epidemic. In most other countries, life went on as normal until it was found out that Covid-19 was very contagious and there was no vaccine for this virus. It started to spread far and wide to other countries and became pandemic with thousands of positive cases and hundreds of deaths a day. For the well-being and safety of our people, the government implemented the Movement Control Order (MCO) and now we are in the third two weeks of the Order. With Covid-19 being still very active, it is very stressful and scary for all people. The Management is very concerned about the safety and well-being of Chemsain members and their families. Our members are strongly advised to strictly follow the precautionary measures as stated in the WHO guidelines as shown in this issue of our newsletter as well as in the circulars from Chemsain Safety and Health Division Covid-19 has caused devastating economic problems and sufferings to a lot of people worldwide. As to how far it will go, we are very fearful of the worst outcome. Most business activities are at a standstill or slowed down drastically due to restrictions under the MCO. The job market looks very gloomy for companies may not only stop hiring new employees but may look towards reducing their workforce. There may not be replacing of staff due to resignation and retirement. Many businesses are really struggling to survive and many may collapse if the MCO continues without substantial assistance from the government. Chemsain has had a few Crisis Management Zoom Meetings with our various management team members on how best to keep the company going and overcome the tough challenges brought about by Covid-19. We have drawn up certain strategies and with the strong support of all Chemsain members we are confident there will be light for us at the end of the tunnel. On the lighter side, it is a great pleasure to see Chemsain staff having a grand time at their Annual Dinners with the presentation of service awards and other enjoyable activities. This is in line with the Company’s culture in cultivating strong bond and team spirit among staff as family members of Chemsain. In Kuching, we also had a Lion Dance at a dinner function with our clients at Sunnydale on 7th February 2020. It is believed that the Lion Dance will bring good fortune and greater achievements to Chemsain. The article on Marina Roland Nawe’s career as an Environmental Consultant is very interesting and informative. This will strongly encourage and attract graduates to take up Environmental Consultancy as a career. With the Lion Dance at Chemsain during the Chinese New Year, we hope it will truly bless us with good fortune and determination to overcome the challenges to our business activities due to Covid-19. The traditional dish comprises thin slices of pickled vegetables and other ingredients which are mixed together thoroughly when the dish is eaten. The taste of the dish is enhanced by its special sauce, which imparts a distinctive flavour. The popular custom is for all round the dining table to toss the ingredients high in the air with joyful exclamations of “Loh Hey” (toss high).
