Message from the Interim Dean It is with great pleasure that I am able to send greetings to you all as you are reading the first edition of the Westbrook College of Health Professions (WCHP) Research and Scholarship Newsletter. Prior to each Board of Trustees meeting, WCHP collects information from each program about what presentations, publications, and grants occurred since the last meeting. During a recent discussion with John Rosene about all of the amazing work that is happening across the college, we talked about how we hadn’t even realized the great scholarly work that is being produced by WCHP. This conversation was the birth of this newsletter with the goal to share with our students, alumni, and colleagues the work that is happening across the college. We are a college that believes strongly in interprofessional collaboration in professional practice but also in research and scholarly work. Thus, one of the hopes of this newsletter is that with sharing the scholarly work of our colleagues we may find future research collaborations within the college, as well as across other colleges at UNE. We have decided to do a newsletter twice a year. In this newsletter you will find the spotlight page that is highlighting the winner of the Research and Scholarship award for 2021 and their amazing work. In the future editions, the spotlight page will share the work of others in order for you to get to know the faculty member better. This edition presents the citations for all of the presentations, publications, and grants. The future newsletters will elaborate on this information with abstracts and other information to give more detail to the scholarly work. The goal of this newsletter is to allow you to be able to learn about different scholarly work that is happening within the WCHP programs as well as across programs at UNE. We encourage you to reach out to the authors to ask more about their work and explore future collaborations. We think you will be amazed and excited to see all that is happening across the college. WCHP is proud of all the research and scholarship activity that has happened, is in progress, and is still to be developed! I leave you with a quote from Margaret Fuller. “If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it.” Great work to everyone! Continue the work and share your knowledge with others! Sally McCormack Tutt 3

2020-2021 Distinguished Research Mentor Recipient Thomas Meuser, Ph.D., joined the faculty of UNE in the fall of 2018, as a Professor of Social Work in the Westbrook College of Health Professions and as the Founding Director of the new university-wide Center for Excellence in Aging & Health (CEAH). The UNE Legacy Scholars Program is the signature program of the new center and engages interested adults, aged 60+ years, in support of research and scholarship on healthful aging. Dr. Meuser is a clinical psychologist with specialized training and experience in narrative gerontology, the neuropsychology of dementing disorders, and psychosocial intervention approaches to enhance well-being in older adults. Tom is on the Editorial Board for the peer-reviewed journal, Gerontology & Geriatrics Education and was named a Fellow of the Gerontolgical Society of America in 2011. Tom earned his MA and PhD degrees in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis on aging from the University of Missouri - St. Louis (1992, 1997), and he completed a post-doctoral fellowship in clinical geropsychology practice at the Center for Healthy Aging in Akron, OH, in 1998. His fellowship training emphasized practice in nursing home and assisted living settings - important settings for thoughtful, person-centered intervention today. The next decade of his professional career was spent in medical school settings where he honed his skills as a researcher and translational educator. He served as the Administrative Director for the Alzheimer's Disease Brain Bank at Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 1998-99. He then transitioned to the Knight Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) at Washington University of School of Medicine (1999-2007) where he served as a center co-investigator and core leader on a \"P50\" center grant from the National Institute on Aging. Just before coming to UNE, Tom served as an Interim Associate Dean for the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Missouri - St. Louis, where is also directed the Gerontology Program starting in 2007. He was profiled by the St. Louis Post Dispatch for his latter work in 2012. Tom is known for his work loss and grief in dementia caregiving (including a widely used measure - the MM Caregiver Grief Inventory), older driver fitness, and reminiscence and life review. His latest research focuses on legacy beliefs in older adults and cross-generational communication about what matters most in life. He spoke on the TED stage about his work in 2017. Tom founded the UM - St. Louis Life Review Project in 2008, and he and his students have conducted over 350 video recorded life story videos with senior volunteers since. Tom's published research spans many issues in aging, while staying close to themes of independence, coping, meaning and successful life transition. He is experienced in all aspects of human subject’s research, including study administration, grant writing, database development, mixed methods approaches, data analysis, and publication/dissemination of findings. He's a regular reviewer for over a dozen journals in aging, and he's participated in a number of NIH and other grant-related study sections (i.e., where research proposals are reviewed and scored) over the years. He looks forward to drawing on this experience as be helps grow new aging-related research and scholarship at UNE. “……….Dr. Meuser finds joy in his students’ accomplishments and continuously overshadows his own efforts when recognizing that of his students.” “……….I admire Dr. Meuser’s passion for his work, his never-ending flow of research ideas, and his ability to have positively affected so many lives in the short time he has been at UNE.” 5
