STUDY GUIDE – MATHEMATICS 2015 STUDY & EXAM TIPS:1. Be prepared: Use your exam timetable to work out a study timetable. Your study timetable must:  Be time efficient: Ensure that youhave enough time to study for each exam. You need to spend a minimum of 10 preparing hours for every hour you are going to write in an examination. Prioritise and organize your time to ensure that you spend study time effectively.  Be specific – your study timetable should be specific about what you are going to study in each study session. Use this study guide to focus on specific things you want to know and or master e.g. Session 1: Equations – Fraction equations.  Be realistic – it’s not possible to study your entire Mathematics book in one hour on the morningof the Mathematics exam.  Allow for regular breaks – don’t spend hours staring at a book hoping that you will magically absorb the information. Study for 30 minutes at a time, and then have an immediate reflection time. Ask yourself: what did I want to learn in the past 30 min? Have I achieved mu goal?. You then HAVE to take a 5min break to allow the brain to process the information. In this space walk to sip water or something; get up and move around. Don’t start watching TV because your five minutebreak will turn into a three hour break!2. Study actively and know your learning style – make notes, use mind maps, summarise information in your own words, write old exam papers, practise test problems. Never learn by rote. It is boring and a waste of time!3. Know your strengths and weaknesses: it’s always easier to study sections we are good at. Ensure that you give enough time to sections that are difficult for you.4. Understand your work – you will never remember what you do not understand. If you don’t understanda section of work, ask your teacher or any Maths teacher for help. Make an appointment with your teacher or a Maths teacher so that the work can be explained one more time. OWLAG |Study Guide 2015 3

STUDY GUIDE – MATHEMATICS 20155. Make a study area: Choosea quiet place with few distractions – you should not have your cell phone, computer or a TV on. If youneed music to study, play the musicsoftly.6. Make yourself comfortable enough so you can concentrate but not so comfortable that you fall asleep.7. Always study in the same place and ensureyouhave good light.8. Have your study timetable and your study guide iin front of youand tick off each section that you complete. It will help to motivate you to continue.9. Look after your physical well- being – get enough sleep(7-8 hours a night), eat healthy small meals regularly, exercise every day. Even though c o -curricular is not c ompulsory during exams, you are encouraged to reserve time to exercise as this will help you retain information better.10. Look after your emotional and social well- being – don’t fight with friends. Leave the conflict until after the exams!11. Look after your spiritual well-being.12. Writing the exam:  Arrive on time for the exam and know your exam venue before you start writing your exams!  Have all the necessary equipment so that youdo not have to borrow pens, pencils, calculators etc.  Keepan eye on the clock while youare writing to ensure that you finish your paper.  Get enough sleep the night before;eat a healthy breakfast on the day of the exam.13. Trust yourself – once the exam has been written, don’t worryabout it anymore! OWLAG |Study Guide 2015 4

STUDY GUIDE – MATHEMATICS 2015 KNOW YOUR EXAMYou exam will assess your knowledge, reasoning, communication of thoughts and your capacity to think and reason.Four levels of difficulty will be used to discriminate your level of oration:COGNITIVE LEVELS EXPLANATION OF SKILLS TO BE DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE (20%)  Algorithms MYP Level 1 -2 (25%)  Estimation; appropriate rounding of numbers  TheoremsROUTINE PROCEDURES (30%)  Straight recall MYP Level 3 -4 (25%)  Identifying from data sheet  Simple mathematical factsCOMPLEX PROCEDURES (35%)  Know and use of appropriate vocabulary MYP Level 5 -6 (25%)  Knowledge and use of formulae All of the above will be based on known knowledge.  Problems are not necessarily unfamiliar and can involve the integration of different LOs  Perform well-known procedures  Simple applications and calculations which must have many steps and may require interpretation from given information  Identifying and manipulating of formulae All of the above will be based on known procedures.  Problems are mainly unfamiliar and learners are expected to solve by integrating different LOs  Problems do not have a direct route to the solution but involve: using higher level calculation skills and reasoning to solve problems mathematical reasoning processes  These problems are not necessarily based on real world contexts and may be abstract requiring fairly complex procedures in finding the solutions.SOLVING PROBLEMS (15%)  Solving non-routine, unseen problems by demonstrating MYP Level 7 -8 (25%) higher level understanding and cognitive processes  Interpreting and extrapolating from solutions obtained by solving problems based in unfamiliar contexts  Using higher level cognitive skills and reasoning to solve non- routine problems  Being able to break down a problem into its constituent parts – identifying what is required to be solved and then using appropriate methods in solving the problem  Non-routine problems be based on real contexts OWLAG |Study Guide 2015 5
