12 WAT E R P RO O F & B R E AT H A B L E T EC H N O LO GY The waterproof, breathable material we use in all of our original waterproof socks is a hydrophilic membrane. It’s a thin but solid, flexible layer which does not allow water droplets to pass through, making it totally waterproof. Waterproof fabrics and garments are generally tested to withstand a certain level of ‘hydrostatic head’. The higher the hydrostatic head, the greater the waterproof performance of the membrane. The membrane alone in Sealskinz knitted waterproof products is tested to withstand a column of water (hydrostatic head) >2 0 , 0 0 0 m m . (BS3424: Part 26; HYDROSTATIC HEAD TEST MEMBRANE Method 29A : 1990). This guarantees waterproofing to the highest level.
WAT E R P RO O F S O C K S The close fitting nature of Sealskinz waterproof socks enables very high breathability from the hydrophilic membrane. The membrane ‘breathes’ by enabling water molecules to pass, driven through the membrane because of the higher temperature and humidity inside the sock compared with the outside. This process is also known as osmosis. The rapid transfer of moisture away from the skin keeps you cool, dry and comfortable for l o n g e r. The hydrophilic membrane has a water vapour permeability of over 65% (WVP/24hr) (Test method: BS7209:1990 )

16 K E Y M AT E R I A L S & T EC H N O LO G I E S MERINO WOOL Merino is finer than traditional wool and soft to the touch so it is very comfortable next to the skin over long periods of time. Merino is excellent at absorbing and releasing moisture which acts to either insulate in the coldest of conditions or regulating temperature in cooler conditions to keep you comfortable. MOISTURE MERINO VAPOUR WOOL SKIN Each fibre is encased in microscopic overlapping scales that are hydrophobic (water repellent). The core of the fibre is highly absorbent enabling Merino to absorb and release 10 times more moisture than synthetics. Merino fibres can absorb up to one third of its own weight in moisture without feeling clammy or wet to the touch. In our waterproof products, the moisture is then transferred through the membrane where it dries. Another incredible feature of Merino is that it has excellent anti-microbial properties which prevents odour buildup inside the sock. A durable outer, insulation, performance liner and hydrophobic membrane is a thin solid structure but is a flexible layer which does not allow water droplets to pass through, making it totally waterproof. Waterproof fabrics and garments are generally tested to withstand a certain level of ‘hydrostatic head’. The higher the hydrostatic head, the greater the waterproof performance of the membrane. The membrane alone in Sealskinz knitted waterproof products is tested to withstand a column of water (hydrostatic head) >7, 0 0 0 m m . This guarantees waterproofing to the highest level. The membrane ‘breathes’ by enabling water molecules to pass, driven through the membrane because of the higher temperature and humidity inside the product compared with the outside. The process is known as osmosis. The rapid transfer of moisture away from the skin keeps you cool, dry and comfortable for longer.
