uni lifeMAGIC MIKE XXLNow showing in cinemasGiven that the last time I visited a cinemawithout my children was way back in1996 to see the movie Twister (rememberHelen Hunt?), I was pretty excited aboutthe prospect of attending the Magic MikeXXL premiere. Goodbye Spongebob, helloChanning Tatum! While the promise of rock-hard abs andprecisely-trimmed eyebrows may havecontributed to a packed house at this‘Chicks at the Flicks’ premiere, the storylinehad less substance than the cheekyunderwear of this male danceensemble. Magic Mike XXLbrings together the original OFFICIALtroupe (minus Matthew SITEMcConaughey) whoembark on a mission toattend the ‘Male EntertainersConvention’ at Myrtle Beach. After a seriesof disjointed, awkward set pieces, theboys finally arrive at the convention andare braver than ever when it comes timeto perform. The final sequence of ‘danceroutines’ pushes the ‘M’ rating to the limit. If you’re looking for a movie that requireslittle concentration, and don’t mind a bit(okay, a LOT) of eye candy, then give thismovie a go. Expectation management iskey. Expect to be entertained (on somelevel), to laugh and to be surprised by thelimits that are pushed within this movie.Maybe don’t expect a compelling storylinethat will leave you wanting more. My lastpiece of advice: let’s just say that this iscertainly not a movie I would take myMum to see, even though she is one veryopen-minded 69 year old!WORDS: BELINDA CAMERON – USQ Alumni Photo by Claudette Barius - © 2014 Warner Bros.IMAGES: IMDB WEBSITE Entertainment Inc. and Ratpac-Dune Entertainment LLC
