For the final project, I wanted to retell the stories of great and wise women throughout history who have been deprived of their achievements in masculine society, by using \"Nüshu\", as an inspiration. Nüshu is a script used exclusively by women in Jiangyong County, Hunan Province, China. What is \"Nüshu\"? It was developed as a secret code for women to communicate with each other and express their innermost thoughts and feelings, as they were traditionally not given access to education or allowed to express themselves freely in Nüshupublic. 女书
Photo of elderly sisters reading Nüshu Photo of elderly sisters reading Nüshu Nüshu is believed to have originated in the 13th century and was passed down from generation to generation through close relationships between women, such as mother and daughter, sisters, or close friends. Historically, it was not socially acceptable for Chinese women to openly talk about personal regrets, the hardships of agricultural life or feelings of sadness and grief. Nüshu provided an outlet for the women and helped to create a bond of female friendship and support that was of great importance in a male-dominated society. It was mainly used for writing songs, poems, and personal messages to express emotions, record daily life, and share on handkerchiefs, headscarves, fans or cotton belts and exchanged.
Features of \"Nüshu\"? 1. Each symbol represents a syllable and was written using sharpened bamboo sticks. It means that each character represents a syllable rather than a single sound or letter. 2. Nüshu characters are composed of strokes and dots, and many of them resemble traditional Chinese characters but with slight variations. 3. It is written vertically from top to bottom, and from right to left. The contemporary situation of Nüshu The script was almost lost in the 20th century due to China's changing social and cultural environment. However, efforts have been made to preserve and promote Nüshu in recent years, and it was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage by the Chinese government in 2006. Today, Nüshu is considered an important cultural relic and symbol of the resilience and creativity of women in traditional Chinese society. Whereas, from my further research, I also found that there are some men who spread the phrase \"the creator of Nüshu was a man\" on the Network, trying to obscure the gender of the creator of Nushu in order to erase this achievement that represents the wisdom of women.
Matilda Effect This event reminds me of so many other similar stories of other women in history. It could also be summarized as Matilda Effect, a bias, that against acknowledging the achievements of women whose work is attributed to their male colleagues. For instance, Rosalind Franklin's contribution to the discovery of the structure of DNA was not fully recognized during her lifetime. Her critical work in X-ray crystallography provided essential data for James Watson and Francis Crick's discovery of the double helix structure of DNA, but she was not given credit for 1. Women's contributions to science are often overlooked or attributed to male colleagues. 2. Women are not given the same recognition, credit, or funding for their research compared to men. 3. Women are often excluded from professional networks and opportunities, leading to a lack of visibility and advancement. 4. Women are subjected to gender stereotypes and bias, which can affect their confidence, performance, and career prospects.the discovery until many years later.
Intention * Promote this dying culture * Rewrite the story of women * Depict the global issue of gender equity Inspiration Artwork: Stream of consciouness Artwork by Chaco Terada Artwork by Annabel Forrest
Idea of the Artwork I wanted to make a video about me as a modern person traveling into the past to have these women who have suffered injustice write down their true experiences and feelings in a document. The video ends with me opening them up in the present and publishing the facts of what they have experienced. Included in this document is an easy to read bio that prints the facts that are now well known. However, the pain that these women experienced that was not seen by the world, I will write in wax on muslin in the form of a women's book. Only by redyeing the cloth will we be able to see the things that are not known. Photo of the process of batik
