The Importance of Wearing a Mask in Public and Work Places It’s important that employers, employees and the public are aware of the major changes and impact that COVID-19 has caused on the work environment and workplace and what many employers are doing to help keep employees safe from on-the-job hazards. With today’s pandemic concerns, “employees should wear cloth face coverings in public settings and work environments where social distancing measures cannot be maintained” (OSHA COVID-19 Guidance) because “COVID-19 spreads mainly among people who are in close contact with one another” (CDC; COVID-19 Considerations for Wearing Masks). Grocery stores, offices and factories for example, understand the challenges of “staying the recommended distance from others at every moment, particularly when passing in an aisle, hallway or when workers are changing shifts for instance” (Safety Law Matter). Cloth face masks work to protect and slow the spread of the virus from asymptomatic people that may be unaware they are carriers, noting that when an infected person coughs or sneezes, they are producing respiratory droplets or particles as small as 0.3 micrometers which are the hardest to get rid of and that can stay in the air for hours depending on how much airflow the space has.
