ROCK THE ROAD WITH THE STROKES ALBUM! ON DROP THE NEW Did the Strokes know something we didn’t? At midnight on April 10, the NYC rock band released their first studio album in seven years, aptly titled The New Abnormal. After headlining Governor’s Ball in 2019 and de- buting the new song “The Adults Are Talking,” the Strokes began dropping hints at a New Year’s Eve Show this past December that a new album was on the horizon. “The 2010s, whatever the f*** they’re called, we took ’em off,” said lead singer Julian Casablancas at the Strokes’ NYE show, according to Pitchfork. “And now we’ve been unfrozen and we’re back.” Since that announcement, three months have passed, a global pandemic has occurred, and their man Bernie Sanders has suspended his presidential campaign, but never- theless, the Strokes have delivered on their promise and are officially back with a nine-track studio album. Stream the album below and see if the Strokes’ The New Abnormal will be the perfect soundtrack to help us adjust to our new, abnormal lives. 1

INDIE The British band’s new album, “Notes on a Conditional Form,” is a more downcast take on the challenges of living in the internet The 1975 is a British pop band, not a graduate seminar’s sparsely attended lecture series, though the titles of its most recent albums certainly invite that clarification. The bold, eclectic “A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships” from 2018 found the verbose, self-aware frontman Matty Healy moving deftly between arena-sized anthems and confessional ballads, serving up cheeky Twitter-era bons mots on the pitfalls of fame, mortality and contemporary life. (“Danny says we’re living in a simulation,” he sang, “but he works in a petrol station.”) Now, a year and a half later, comes the 200-level curricu- lum: “Notes on a Conditional Form.” THE 1975 “ITS ABOUT BEING IN THE GANG” 4

INDIE Matt Helders has revealed that Arctic Monkeys are in the “early stages of trying to write a [new] record”. Speaking on Instagram Live this evening (Jan- uary 13), the drummer explained that the Sheffield band had been “faced with the obvious obstacles” while working on the follow-up to ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’. The NME Big Read: Arctic Monkeys: “Science fiction allows you to explore the real world” “Being separated by the sea is one of them,” Helders said, referring to the travel restrictions that have been imposed due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis. “We’re all eager to do it – we would have been doing it by now in a normal time. There’s definitely a desire from our end to do a new record as soon as we can.” Helders went on to say that he is “always tinkering on machines and synths” at his home in Los Angeles. “I’ve got drums here,” he said, adding: “[I’m] always trying to improve on and study certain things.” The musician was photographed in a recording studio back in October, leading fans to speculate that new music could be on the horizon. Last month, Arctic Monkeys’ manager revealed that the group had been “working on music” and had initially planned to record last summer. ANALELBBWUUMM 5
