APPLICATION CYCLE SUGGESTIONS 3. SURFACE PREPARATION (BARRIERS, SEALERS AND PRIMERS) 3.1. Cracking Problems The cracking problem is usually seen on CNC treated MDF panels, joining points of the panel, edges of the panels and poor quality (low density) MDF panels. • In CNC treated panels, there is a difference in density between the engraved areas or edges and the panel surface. This leads to the absorption difference , and even when the same application amount is applied, the differences in coverage may occur. At this time, if more primer is applied in the low coverage area, the standard application amount is exceeded and a thicker film is formed. This causes cracking over time. • In general, the absorbency of MDF panel surfaces is less than absorbency of edges. Hiding power difference may occur when the same weight is applied during application. In order to eliminate hiding power differences, excess primer application causes cracking over time. • Because of the high absorbency of low density MDF panels, consumption of primer during application increases, therefore excess primer causes cracking risk. Due to the density of the panels, applying more primer than the specified amounts and repeating this application with sanding between the floors at certain intervals causes the product not to dry completely within the periods specified in the technical bulletin. Therefore, the surface of the film dry, while the innerside doesn't dry. Over time, the paint layer that is also dry innerside will narrow and this shrinkage in the surface part is seen as cracks. Sudden air temperature change is one of the reasons for cracking. It is recommended to apply the BL193.77.1000 MDF Barrier in the GENÇ product range to remove the absorbency differences, to prevent excessive amount application and thus to eliminate the cracking situations. In order to prevent cracking due to sudden air changes, the primer also must have high elasticity. (BP548.77.1000 and BP531.77.1000 etc.) The combination recommended for cracking is shown in the table below. Products Recommended Amount of Number of Coats Sanding Grit Size Application g/m2 BL193.77.1000 1 280 (rough sanding) BP531.77.1000 60 - 90 3 220 (between coats) + 400 (for topcoat) 130 - 140 BL193.77.1000 60 - 90 1 280 (rough sanding) BP548.77.1000 130 - 140 3 220 (between coats) + 400 (for topcoat) BL193.77.1000 60 - 90 1 280 (rough sanding) BP100.77.1000 130 - 140 3 220 (between coats) + 400 (for topcoat) In order to obtain maximum performance from the products to be applied, it is necessary to comply with the mixing ratios and application conditions written in technical bulletin.

APPLICATION CYCLE SUGGESTIONS 3. SURFACE PREPARATION (BARRIERS, SEALERS AND PRIMERS) 3.2. Oily (Resinous) Solid Wood and Veneer Application VL292.77.0000 Wood Barrier is recommended for oily (resinous) solid wood and veneers (like teak, rosewood etc.). If the barrier is not applied, the adhesion problems, blurred, creasing, and rupture of the stain can be observed when arise the wood's resin over time. Besides, it is recommended to use a barrier to prevent surface problems originating from coating production. Once the barrier has been applied, sanding sealer can be applied in from 1 hour to 3 hours. If a longer period of time is anticipated, rough sanding should be done. Products Recommended Amount of Number of Coats Sanding Grit Size Application g/m2 VL292.77.0000 1 - VP850.77.0000 60 - 90 3 220 (between coats) + 400 (for topcoat) 130 - 140 VL292.77.0000 60 - 90 1- VP380.77.0000 130 - 140 3 220 (between coats) + 400 (for topcoat) In order to obtain maximum performance from the products to be applied, it is necessary to comply with the mixing ratios and application conditions written in technical bulletin. The application amount may vary according to the oil ratio of the veneer or solid wood. 3.3. Adhesion Problem on Melamine Surfaces If primer or sealer are applied directly on melamine surfaces, adhesion problems may occur. For this reason, it is recommended to apply VL195.77.0000 Melamine Barrier. Once the barrier has been applied, sealer can be applied from 1 hour to 3 hours. If a longer period of time is anticipated, rough sanding should be done with 280 grit sandpaper. Products Recommended Amount of Number of Coats Sanding Grit Size Application g/m2 VL195.77.0000 1 - VP850.77.0000 60 - 90 1 220 (between coats) + 400 (for topcoat) 130 - 140 VL195.77.0000 60 - 90 1- BP548.77.0000 130 - 140 1 220 (between coats) + 400 (for topcoat) In order to obtain maximum performance from the products to be applied, it is necessary to comply with the mixing ratios and application conditions written in technical bulletin.
