Concept : The concept seeks to establish a broad landscape structure for the proposed campus, a planned sys- tem of open spaces and vegetation that is visibly responsive to certain specific landscape qualities of the site. Three main features are: Sabarmati River Its river-side location which offers panoramic views across the Sabarmati and suggests the possibil- ity of a linear landscape edge, as indicated in the Master Plan. Natural Ravines The northern part of the southern section of the site, characterised by ravine lands. These are susceptible to back-flow from the river during floods, and also erosion from the passage of large volumes of water during monsoons. They represent a degraded landscape which can be rehabilitated by erosion control and by encouraging the growth of native species to become an asset, so that it can be utilized as a picturesque landscape feature whilst at the same time serving useful environmental functions. Seasonal Ponds Two seasonal ponds situated in slightly low-lying areas amidst the former agricultural fields, which can be retained and integrated with the proposed storm water management system, and which will also be attractive visual foci. 8

Open Spaces : All special car parking structures allow for a ve- hicle free central area and create community open spaces at several different levels. The open spaces of the campus are arranged to function as a series of courtyards, pedestrian streets and resting spaces. These are specifically designed to encourage and facilitate interaction and communication. The entrance to the site is located on the north and it brings all visitors to the central area reserved for experimental works of students. This area will be constantly changing and it will define the charac- ter of SPA Vijayawada. Academic Building : Studios are the most important part of architectur- al education. These have been designed to maximize interaction between different classes. The students are exposed to the passage that can be used for exhibition of students work. The exhibition space of the school has been dis- tributed in a way that every floor has space for temporary exhibition of students work. This will help improve the standard of students work as the whole school will be able to see the work of differ- ent groups. The site has a nice view of the hill in the north and an open air theatre has been created that allows students to enjoy the hill view in the evenings. 16

Energy Conservation : Thermal Comfort Traditionally academic buildings in public institutions have been non-air conditioned buildings. However, in such buildings it is common to see air condition- ers fitted to a large number of rooms. At the same time, more and more private institutions are being designed as centrally air-conditioned buildings. It is necessary to provide a reasonable degree of thermal comfort without resorting to expensive mechanical air conditioning. The design uses different systems of cooling for buildings with different usage and dif- ferent performance requirements. In the hot humid climate of Vijayawada, thermal comfort is difficult to achieve with non mechanical means as natural heat sinks are missing. A combination of low energy meth- ods has been proposed for providing comfort. Academic and Administrative Buildings The building is be externally insulated and heat is to be drained out of the structure through water pipes buried in the floor and roof slabs. The warm water will be collected in a large underground tank. During night time the warm water (28O) will be circulated to the roof pond where it will be cooled down (24O). The thermal storage will recharged by the morning. The roof pond will be a sealed bag covered with a layer of white pebbles. Water will be sprayed on the pebbles at night. The pebbles will insulate the roof pond during daytime. It is expected that the studio and class room spaces would be able to maintain temperatures of 26o to 30OC. 17

Eco Skyscraper Location : Noida City Centre Noida Area : INDIA Site : 1 291 670 sqft Located at the Noida City Centre, the upcoming Busi- ness centre for Noida which has good connectivity with the capital New Delhi and Yamuna Expressway. the site is surrounded by the planned residential colony on one side and the urban village on the other side. The site fits in a sustainable model of city as connected with the Metro Station and Bus Stand as major transport services. 21

Present City Model : If we look at the model of City like Delhi, we can clearly observe that there is no difference in the typology of the structures proposed for different functions. Taking an example of Gurgaon, Both the Office buildings and Residential buildings have the same height and access to the ground. This aber- rant model of development is definitely not appre- ciable. Economic Viability : Looking at the all classes of Society, For the middle class and Lower class of society, it is economically unsustainable to build or afford a high rise Housing. While on the other hand, Upper class of society find a home at high rise building affordable and symbol of status. Quality of Life: To improve quality of life we need to look at the whole planning level with different perspective. We need to have innovation in planning keeping the environmental, economic and social sustainability. Proposed City Model : To improve the quality of life, we need housings ac- cording to the economic affordability of the differ- ent class of societies. Maximum amount of resi- dences should be near the ground and a maximum of open spaces should provide to them. Also Housing for Higher Income Group can be merge in a sky- scraper with spaces like Office Buildings, Commercial Buildings, Institutional Buildings which do not need connection to the ground. 22

Brief : This Eco-Skyscraper is an example of robust Ar- Objective : chitecture for not just sustaining but surviving the climate change. For survival we need three things, Food, water and shelter. Water is generated from the humidity taking the advantage of spiral; the wind has maximum surface area of contact. Wind loses the humidity on the façade with the special treatment. This is used then for drinking purposes. The shelter has mixed use of functions to achieve self-sufficiency. Various passive and direct energy methods are used to achieve zero carbon footprint building. The building is placed in a context of well connectivity with public transport. It recycles all its waste and use the organic waste as manure for the farming and produces net zero waste. The idea was to envision a skyscraper as a part of City where, most of the land is available for affordable residential and open greens. Rest all functions can stack-up and form a Skyscraper. Since the skyscraper is considered as the most un- sustainable form of architecture, main design chal- lenge was to make that sustainable. Not only achiev- ing Environmental, Social and Economic Sustainability, The design should going to be a resource for Food and Water, to make a Self Sufficient City. 23

Concept : Eco Skyscraper This is evident that designing with “green” or eco- logically responsive design objectives in mind is vital. Indeed, these must certainly now are the prime objectives for the design community today. This concerns the belief that all those concerned with building design can, with the application of ecological principles, make a significant contribution towards a sustainable future through the creation of a thorough ‘ green architecture’ that is evolved from a comprehensive method, and how it particularly relates to the ecological design of skyscrapers. Food This will be primarily achieved through the Vertical Coupling of different programs of space use with the Terrace Farming, within the overall programme of the building. This will help in making a city self- sufficient. Also, it will employ the nearby villagers who lost their lands in the process of urbanization. Hence, also helps in Social Sustainability. Water These days technological advancements help in generating water from the humidity. Which in other words we can call as “Generating water out of thin Air”. Also technology like Living Machine is can be used. A Living Machine is a series of tanks teeming with live plants, trees, grasses and algae, koi and goldfish, tiny freshwater shrimp, snails, and a di- versity of microorganisms and bacteria. Each tank is a different mini-ecosystem designed to eat or break down waste. The process takes about four days to turn mucky water crystal clear. It is chemical-free, and, compared to conventional waste treatment, it costs less financially and ecologically. 24

The building is using innovations for lowering the cost and time of construction. Modular Units for the design help in reducing the cost and time of con- struction. Since the design envisions the High Rise Nodal City Model, it provides poor with more land at low price. Hence, helps in Economic Sustainability. The City Centre is treating all its waste gener- ated on the site itself. A lot of energy is wasted in transporting the waste from source to the treat- ment plant. So, to avoid that, a waste treatment plant is part of the City Centre. Also Organic waste generated on the site is used as the manure for the Farming. The building is using the latest technologies in Green Materials. The whole material fabric and Structure of the building isv designed with a bal- ance between embodied energy and operational energy. 28

Some part of the build- ing are getting direct sunlight, these farms will be growing summer crops. The parts of the farm which are having diffused sunlight will be growing winter crops. Also Hydroponics helps in producing food with minimum land and water requirement. Two Spiral towers help in directing the wind which comes from north-west direction at the site. The Wind is directed towards the center of the towers. Wind mills are installed at the center of the tow- ers to harness maximum wind and producing energy for the Towers. Along with this, various passive and direct methods have been used to reduce the energy consumption of the building and also producing the required energy for the building. All the waste produced at the building is recycled at the site itself. Since a lot of energy is used to transport the waste to the waste treatment plant, Waste is treated on the site itself to save the energy. Also the organic waste produced from the residents of the building, is used as manure for the farming. 29

The plazas present themselves as a platform for public interaction and tolerence. All the roads around the site lead straight to these platforms irrespective of the density and type of residential area.
