Katherine Ramírez HAPPINESSA lot of people say that happiness is the key to life, and Katherine lives according to that. Hermain distinction is her big smile, from ear to ear. Problems have not stopped Katherine from living ashappy as she wants. Before she was born, she was diagnosed with brain paralysis and was destinedto a life filled with difficulties. However, she is now 16 years old and lives life at its fullest.Katherine has a big family: her grandparents, her mom and brother, her aunt and uncle andthree cousins. Katherine’s brother is 17 years old, recently graduated from high school and iseagerly waiting 18th birthday so that he can work to help his family and continue his studies.Unfortunately, Katherine’s father left when he found out that she would be a special needs baby, needing a lifetime of care, but that did not stop her family from giving her all the love and care thatshe needs. In her family, only her mother and aunt work. They both get paid minimum wage, making less than$500 a month to support the ten members of the family. Because her mom works 6 days a week,Katherine’s grandmother takes charge of caring for her. “Since she was 3 months old, I have beentaking take care of her”, said Agustina Ramírez Zavaleta. But as Katherine has gown, it hasbecome a bigger struggle to move her around and her family has never been able to buy awheelchair for her. But something big was about to happen: A friend from the community wherethe family lives, told them about FUSAL-Chance, and they applied to get a wheelchair.

When receiving the news that she finally was getting a wheelchair, a world filled withpossibilities was opened to Katherine and her family. Her grandmother went with her to receivethe wheelchair personally. “I am really happy because it is great to have someone tell you that you willreceive a chair, it is life changing”, said Agustina while Katherine smiled, “she came here really happy, even was screaming with joy during the bus ride”.Now Katherine has more opportunities to live her live fully. She loves to go out, eat out with herfamily, play with friends and take baths. The community where she lives loves her because she isalways happy and smiling, and with her wheelchair she can now share her happiness with friendsand neighbors.“I want to thank you and thank God because without God nobody can move. It’s because of Himthat you were able to donate the wheelchairs. My deepest appreciation to you, this child needed thishelp!” said Agustina.Thank you, Free Wheelchair Mission, with your donation we can keep spreading happiness by giving these useful wheelchairs to unprivileged kids who need to move, gain their independence and become part of society.

Luis Miguel Zepeda STRENGTHIt is a blessing to have a loving family whom you can trust even during the hardest times. LuisMiguel, a strong 24 year-old young man, has a small but caring family that always looks after him.His hard-working dad, his loving mom María and his sister Fátima. María dedicates her life totaking good care of her son, with the useful help of her husband and daughter. When Miguel was born, María Antonia noticed that his head wasn’t big enough for his bodysize. “During the baby’s checkups, I noticed that his head did not grow proportionally. I mentioned itto the pediatrician and he referred him to the Bloom Hospital (a public children's hospital in El Salvador). There he was diagnosed with microcephaly; over time he developed heart disease and now that he is a bitolder, he has cirrhosis and pleural effusion”, said María.It is really hard for his family to battle against all of these diseases. Luis Miguel’s dad works as adelivery courrier; he gets paid the minimum wage of $251 per month, a very low income tosupport a family of four. Not only does he has to support the family’s basic needs, but also all ofLuis Miguel's medicines (around 5 different medicines) and the trips to the hospital to do physicaltherapy and health checks, which is 30 minutes away from home. The necessities are many, butthey can't cover all of them. One of those needs was a wheelchair to help Luis Miguel with mobility.

Even though he can walk, doctors recommended Luis Miguel’s mother to keep him as calm and stillas possible. María Antonia told us: “We are not standing him up too much because he gets very tiredeasily, his pressure is always 40/60. The cardiologist said that we should not expose him to walking toomuch”.A friend of the family saw the need that they had, and told them about FUSAL’s program, Chance, and how they should apply to get a wheelchair. This idea excited the family and finally made thedecision to apply. Thanks to the wheelchair received, Luis Miguel can now move around easier, making his life moreindependent and comfortable. No matter what his conditions are, he enjoys life. His mother said:“He likes to see cartoons, he loves to draw -although the strabismus makes it hard- he likes to playwith cars… that fascinates him”.This donation gave him the opportunity to do more things and not get tired as he did before. “Wewill be able to take him out in the neighborhood to get fresh air and distract himself”, said MaríaAntonia. “If I were in front of the donor, I would tell them millions of things! Mainly let them know thatreceiving this chair is a huge blessing and I am very grateful and happy”. Thank you, Free Wheelchair Mission, with your donation we can help families, like Luis Miguel’s, improve their quality of life.

Francisca has lived most of her life with diabetes, almost 40years, but during the last years it got worse, to the point that she had to amputate both of her legs.In El Salvador, around 50% of the people who submit to an amputation are diabetic, just like Franciscade Jesús.Francisca is 62 years old and lives with her husband in Jayaque, a small town in La Libertad. She has always been an independent and hard working woman; her leg amputations changedher life drastically. Fortunately, Francisca has the support of her son, Jaime López Sánchez, who helpsher with a small store Francisca has at home and takes care of her during the most difficult momentsof her disease. She had to fight Diabetes since she was young. Five years ago, she had one of her toes amputated.A year later, she got an ulcer in the same foot and had to have the foot amputated, since all thetreatment she received to fight the ulcer wasn’t effective. A year and a half after that, she lostsensitivity in her leg other leg and got a new ulcer. The doctors were clear: she needed anew amputation if she wanted to survive. “My mom had to accept it and she told me ‘To be honest, ifthat is going to kill me, they better cut it off’”, said Jaime.

Being an active woman, Francisca couldn’t stand being bed-ridden. She has always been anentrepreneur and this situation also affected her emotionally. Her son got a wheelchair, but itwasn’t in good conditions and became a threat to her, because she fell and got hurt multipletimes. She needed a need a new wheelchair, one day a co-worker told Jaime about the programFUSAL-Chance, they applied to the program and got a new one. “She is going to be really happyfor the security received by the new chair... she is going to be very excited”, said Jaime, “I want to thankyou with all my heart for being so generous and giving this service to a lot of people, not only mymother”.Thank you, Free Wheelchair Mission, with your donation to the Chance program, you help people move, be independent and happy.

This disease not only affectsthe nervous system, but it also makes it impossible for the person to walk.Julio’s mother had to dedicate her entire life to taking care of him. She takes him to therapies atleast two days per week, and although she is glad to see her son grow and live another day, it hadbecome really hard for her to carry him around.“At first it was much easier because Julio was younger and he was smaller, but as time passed, he startedto grow and gain weight, which made it harder to move him around. Now the only time we take himout of the house is for therapy”, said Julio’s mom.The hospital for children is very far from their home, it takes around two hours in bus from theirhouse to the hospital. They stopped going there and started taking him to physical therapy in SantaAna, only 40 minutes away from home.

Still, it was difficult to travel to therapy because Julio didn’t have a wheelchair to help him move. His family couldn’t afford to buy one, the only income comes from Julio’s dad, who works in asugar cane plantation. But one day, the rehabilitation center told Julio’s mom about FUSAL'sprogram, Chance, and they applied.“My first chair!”, said Julio as he received the wheelchair that he needed, with glowing eyes and abig, bright smile.
