NEMESIO “NEMI” MIRANDA JR. BIRTHDAY: February 14, 1949 ADDRESS: Angono, Rizal ART FORMS: Painting and Sculpture

5.1 LIVING ARTISTS WHO ARE NATURAL-BORN FILIPINO CITIZENS AT THE TIME OFOMINATION, AS WELL AS THOSE WHO DIED AFTER THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE AWARD IN 1972 BUT WERE FILIPINO CITIZENS AT THE TIME OF THEIR DEATH. FILIPINOS WHO HAVE LOST AND RE- ACQUIRED FILIPINO CITIZENSHIP, THROUGH DUAL CITIZENSHIP STATUS FOR AT LEAST THE MINIMUM PERIOD OF FIVE YEARS SHALL BE ELIGIBLE FOR NOMINATION. Nemesio Miranda Jr. was born in Angono, Rizal on February 14, 1949.

5.2 ARTISTS WHO THROUGH THE CONTENT AND FORM OF THEIR WORKS HAVE CONTRIBUTED IN BUILDING A FILIPINO SENSE OF NATIONHOOD. “I cannot imagine myself doing European art, American art, or any other Asian arts. I can only work with how I feel, and I cannot feel the culture of other countries,” said the 70-year-old savant. “I will grow old and die painting the Filipino subject.” Ssaid by Nemi Miranda. Dubbed as “500 Years of National Patriotism,” Nemi Miranda presented his study of Lapu-Lapu Series from 1521 with a narrative of Filipino heroes from different generations. The sketch also showed Jose Rizal facing execution in 1898, the people represented by Juan Dela Cruz in shackles. Also shown are varying figures of front liners assisting in a hospital bed, handing of “ayuda” (assistance) and dispensing vaccine in 2021. Also depicted in the mural is 500 years of Christianity from the time Magellan landed in Mactan island of Cebu.

What makes NeMiranda’s works more wonderful, if not astonishing, is that they represent the Filipino—his core values, his beliefs (religious, political, and philosophical), his character. In other words, NeMiranda’s paintings reflect the Filipino mind, spirit, and soul. This is the very reason why you will find in his paintings the real, the sacrificial, and the protective love of the parents to their children; the dreams and aspirations of the ordinary folk, working hand just to have some food on their table, roof over their hands, and some clothes to cover their dark brown skin; the unsung heroes and heroines of his Las Islas Filipinas; the mythical and mystical creatures that roam the fields and plains, the mountains and seas, and the forest—all of which are continuously under threat because of corporate greed, legal loopholes in the existing environmental and economic laws of his bayang magiliw—the kapre (the cigar-smoking giant cover with hairs and allegedly keeping some pots of gold inside the tree which this wonderful, yet dreadful, creature resides), the duwende (dwarfs or elves, from the Spanish term, duende); the sirena (mermaids); and some sea monsters, the like of Bakunawa; and the images of the folk beliefs of his countrymen, namely the use of anting-anting for protection, for spiritual combat, and for the accumulation of material wealth (the pampaswerte).

5.3. ARTISTS WHO HAVE PIONEERED IN A MODE OF CREATIVE EXPRESSION ORSTYLE, THUS, EARNING DISTINCTION AND MAKING AN IMPACT ON SUCCEEDINGGENERATIONS OF ARTISTS. He is known as the “Father of Imaginative Figurism”. Miranda observes people and their surroundings in his hometown of Angono, Rizal as inspiration for his artworks. After a 50-year career, he said th at drawing figures “comes very easy” for him, adding that he has mastered the angles and the way the body moves.

5.4. ARTISTS WHO HAVE CREATED A SUBSTANTIAL AND SIGNIFICANT BODY OFWORKS AND/OR CONSISTENTLY DISPLAYED EXCELLENCE IN THE PRACTICE OFTHEIR ART FORM THUS ENRICHING ARTISTIC EXPRESSION OR STYLE. The BALIK TANAW art exhibit will sidelight to shine more color to the celebration as it showcases the other side of Nemiranda’s masterful rendition in paintings that is focused on Family. Love, Local Myths and History. The figures on Nemiranda’s works ore purely the product of his imagination, and his mastery of the human form through pure imagination gained him the title of “Father of Imaginative Figurism.”

5.5 ARTISTS WHO ENJOY BROAD ACCEPTANCE THROUGH: 5.5.1. PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL AND/OR INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION, SUCH AS THE GAWAD CCP PARA SA SINING, CCP THIRTEEN ARTISTS AWARD AND NCCA ALAB NG HARAYA Some of Nemiranda’s numerous awards - 1964, First place in Shankar’s International Competition in Painting in New Delhi, India - June 11, 2013, he received the highest recognition award in Rizal, (Anak ng Lahing Bayani) ALAB ng Rizal

·Most Outstanding Citizen of Angono and Rizal province in the field of the arts. ·February 28, 2019, he received \"Lamp of Culture Award\" from International Theater Institute, UNESCO Artists for Peace and NCCA ·Miranda has been nominated for the 2021 National Artist for Visual Arts at the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Philippines

5.5.2. CRITICAL ACCLAIM AND/OR REVIEWS OF THEIR WORKS The Philippine Army Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Jesus B. Sarsagat, thanked Nemiranda for his tribute. “This sincere expression of appreciation for the Filipino soldiers is enough to boost our spirits and inspire us to do better, and to do more, to be the best Army that our people can be proud of,” he added.

5.5.3. RESPECT AND ESTEEM FROM PEERS. He established and managed various art schools and museum that had influenced and honed the skills of many young artists today, these are: Nemiranda Family Art Museum, Angono School for the Arts, The ArtCamp, Nemiranda Arthouse, Atelier Café Restaurant that caters to the development, promotions and growth of the art community of Angono which became a vital contributions in the development of the art community as the ‘ART CAPITAL OF THE PHILIPPINES’.

Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Criteria for Selection A. HE/SHE IS AN INHABITANT OF AN INDIGENOUS/TRADITIONAL CULTURAL COMMUNITY ANYWHERE IN THE PHILIPPINES THAT HAS PRESERVED INDIGENOUS CUSTOMS, BELIEFS, RITUALS, AND TRADITIONS AND/OR HAS SYNCRETIZED WHATEVER EXTERNAL ELEMENTS THAT HAVE INFLUENCED IT. Evidence Eliza Chawi is an Igorot weaver from the Maligcong Bontoc Mt. Province who intricately weaves the traditional Kankanaey cloth in the Cordilleras. Because of her weaving skills, Eliza’s woven fabrics were accepted in Eastern Weaving which pays good wages to its artisans in exchange for the woven fabrics. Thanks to weaving because it met the need of her family, as well as she kept the traditional weaving of the Cordilleras alive.

HE/SHE MUST HAVE ENGAGED IN A FOLK ART TRADITION THAT HAS BEEN IN EXISTENCE AND DOCUMENTED FOR AT LEAST FIFTY (50) YEARS; Evidence Eliza Chawi, 92 years old, is the oldest weaver of traditional Kankanaey cloth in the Cordillera. She started weaving in 1969 under the Eastern Weaving in the Maligcong Bontoc. Mt. Province. After 34 years of loyally working for Easter Weaving, she finally retired in the year 2003. However, retirement does not stop her from weaving, she continues weaving in her house up until the present year 2022. Therefore, Eliza Chawi is weaving the traditional Kankanaey for nearly 53 years.

Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Criteria for Selection C. HE/SHE MUST HAVE CONSISTENTLY PERFORMED OR PRODUCED OVER A SIGNIFICANT PERIOD, WORKS OF SUPERIOR AND DISTINCTIVE QUALITY. Evidence Throughout her 53 years of weaving, Chawi’s day-to-day schedule is to weave the most beautiful traditional Kankanaey fabrics in their community. Chawi’s woven fabric is one of a kind because it contains traditional geometric designs for Cordillera cloths include v- and x-shaped tiktiko, diamond-shaped matmata, sopo shaped like flowers, and kulibangbang that resemble butterflies. Chawi’s woven fabrics are turned over to the Easter Weaving wherein they will turn in into blankets, clothes, placemats, accessories, etc. Her woven textile tells stories of identity, economics, tradition, and rich culture of their tribes.

HE/SHE MUST POSSESS A MASTERY OF TOOLS AND MATERIALS NEEDED BY THE ART, AND MUST HAVE AN ESTABLISHED REPUTATION IN THE ART AS MASTER AND MAKER OF WORKS OF EXTRAORDINARY TECHNICAL QUALITY. Evidence Eliza Chawi is a master in traditional Kankanaey weaving; she is called Manay by her fellow weavers and the tribal community. In weaving fabrics, she uses handloom, and the way she uses it is at a higher level because she really mastered the use of this tool. Her works are also extraordinary – colorful weaves and intricately designed woven fabric. Her art is fully invested with the intention to change the world all the while that the way they make the traditional fabric remains the same.

HE/SHE MUST HAVE PASSED ON AND/OR WILL PASS ON TO OTHER MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY THEIR SKILLS IN THE FOLK ART FOR WHICH THE COMMUNITY IS TRADITIONALLY KNOWN. Evid ence Anna Chawi Eliza Chawi’s role shifts from worker to teacher; she continues to share her knowledge of weaving with the younger weavers in their tribal community. She said that she is proud that her grandchildren have become professionals. One of them is Anna Chawi, who also learned the ancient artisan skills of Cordillera weaving. By this, she is preserving ancient knowledge in more modern times. Eliza said that her hands are still busy weaving and passing on the skills she has spent a lifetime learning and honing in a lifelong process of learning and teaching that defies the concept of idle retirement.
