Getai Kitsch: Reinterpretation of Getai's Aesthetics as a Visual Language for Contemporary Culture. Act 2

Published by sylvestertan93, 2020-04-22 03:06:25

Description: Getai, a form of free entertainment for the masses in Singapore, has lately become an art-form that is considered non-progressive and distasteful—in other words, kitsch—among today’s local youth. Getai Kitsch: Reinterpretation of Getai’s Aesthetics as a Visual Language for Contemporary Culture is a study and deconstruction of Getai’s visual forms. It provides designers a starting point to reinterpret these visual forms to fit contemporary design tastes for the consumption of local youth, without compromising on its kitschiness.

Act 2 is a combination of the documentation and in-depth study of visual elements found in Getai, which form part of its visual culture. Categorised into 4 different sections, namely: Backdrop and Stage Design, Typography Design, Poster Design and Costume Design, each section focuses on the deconstruction of visual forms and graphic treatments, allowing further understanding of what makes Getai’s aesthetics kitschy.

Costume Design A survey conducted among a pool of 77 young Singaporeans between the ages of 18 to 35 showed that the over-the-top, embellished costumes are the main identifiers associated with Getai. Apart from the singing and dancing, the audience—which comprises dominantly elderly ethnic Chinese—enjoy viewing the elaborate costumes donned by the singers. Therefore, singers would customise their own one- of-a-kind costumes to give the audience an elevated visual experience, gaining them more popularity and opportunities for future performances. However, elaborate costumes ACT 02 Documentation, Visual Studies and 113 Deconstruction of Getai’s Visual Forms

are not always expected of the singers. These expensive custom-made costumes cost approximately 300 Singapore Dollars per outfit, and are therefore only worn for special occasions such as the Hungry Ghost Festival. Aesthetically, these style of these costumes remain pretty much in the ‘80s: heavily colourful sequins, fringe dresses, big mesh pom-pom skirts and feather flappers. These textile materials are considered old-fashioned and gaudy to young Singaporeans. As these pricey costumes are not made for everyday wear, it is imperative for them to be multi-use. One complete costume typically comprises several components of clothing items. Adding or removing components allows performers to create different looks using one costume, for example, removing a piece of outerwear to reveal a dress underneath for the next performance. This is especially essential for the performers during busy periods like the Hungry Ghost Festival because most of them have multiple performances in a single day. They could easily change up the outfit in the car while travelling between locations. 114 Costume Design
