A Handy How to GuideMembers now have a new way to save money, withthe new Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). You cansave or invest money without paying tax on theincome it earns and you also can withdraw it taxfree. Canadians now have flexible account optionsfor a lifetime of savings needs.Valley Credit Union is offering two types ofinvestment vehicles for the TFSA. A High InterestSavings Account and One thru 5 Year fixedinvestment. Is a Registered savings umbrella plan where you can hold investments tax free. (no T5 slip) This is NOT tax deductible like an RRSP. Nor are withdrawals taxable.  You must be at least 18 years of age, a resident of Canada, and have a valid SIN #.  May one more than one TFSA.

 You may contribute $5000.00 annually into the TFSA contract plus any unused contribution room as determined by CCRA. This total amount is for all financial institutions. Over depositing results in the government charging the excess a 1% penalty per month. Members are responsible for ensuring the contribution limit is not exceeded. Your TFSA contribution room will be indicated on your personal income tax notice of assessment or reassessment. Unused contribution room will accumulate each year. A TFSA withdrawal will increase the contribution room for the year after withdrawal. Interest on money borrowed to purchase a TFSA is NOT deductible for tax purposes. A TFSA holder may designate spouse/common-law partner as the successor.
