MISSION 3: JESUS’ STATEMENTS — HE SAID...WHAT? Preliminary Draft LESSON 1: JESUS TELLS AN OLD MAN TO BE RE-BORN M3 L1 NOTES BIG IDEA: KEY TEXT:  CURRICULUM: TAKING AIM: PREPARE: To Do Beforehand: Gather a Bible, ruler, wallet or piggy bank, your birth certificate, a sheet marked with a big X; per pair — one small tube of toothpaste, a paper plate. OPENER: I have a toothpaste challenge for you. On the plate in front of you, I want you to squeeze all the toothpaste out of its tube. Then I’ll tell you the challenge. [When the students are ready, announce]: Your chal- lenge is to see how much of the toothpaste you can get back into the tube in 45 sec- onds. [Surprise the winner with a new toothbrush!] What does toothpaste have to do with Jesus? Let me explain… TRANSITION: When Jesus was about 30 years old, He began His public mini- stry traveling around telling people the way to Heaven. He often spoke His message to crowds, but He also had personal conversations with in- dividuals. The first of these to be recorded by John was with a man named Nico- demus. But Nicodemus had a real problem. He just didn’t get what Jesus was talking about. Jesus told him that, in order to go to Heaven, he would need to be born again. Now, you all had a pretty hard time figuring out how to get toothpaste back into the tube, didn’t you? So imagine what Nicodemus was thinking when Jesus said he had to be born again! How could an old man like him — or anyone, for that matter — re-enter his mother’s stomach and be born all over again? Let’s read the actual story in John 3:1-4. It sounds a bit strange to us too, doesn’t it? Do any of you have any idea what these words born again might mean? [Field responses.] Hmm, I wonder what would help Nicodemus understand Jesus’ words. 73

a) Hold up a Bible: Nicodemus was RELIGIOUS. In fact, Jesus even calls him THE M3 L1 NOTES teacher (literal) of Israel. Yet all his religion didn’t help him understand. Look what Jesus said in verse 10: “Jesus answered and said to [Nicodemus],  ‘Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?’” * b) Hold up a ruler: He was a RULER, not physically, like this ruler, but politically. He was a member of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council of the day. Yet even political power didn’t help him understand the spiritual truth Jesus was speaking of. c) Hold up a wallet or piggy bank: He was RICH. After Jesus died, Nicodemus helped prepare Jesus’ body for burial. He purchased as many spices as would have been used for a king’s burial! But money can’t buy God’s favor. God doesn’t need any- thing; He already owns everything (see Col 1:16). d) Hold up a birth certificate: He had privileged RELATIONSHIP. He was born into Abraham’s family line, the nation of Israel, God’s chosen people. Yet Jesus said that he needed a different kind of birth — one that’s from above. But Nicodemus just didn’t get it. e) Hold up a sheet with a big X. It turns out that Nicodemus had it all WRONG. He was wrong about who Jesus was, and wrong about how he could get to Heaven. [* Teacher Note: As an expert in the Old Testament, Nicodemus should have understand the concept of being born again. It is described in Ezekiel 11:19; 18:31; 36:26; Jeremiah 31:31, 33.] None of these things would get Nicodemus into Heaven, and none of these things will get us into Heaven. We need to allow Heaven’s light to shine on our understand- ing. Do you WANT to know Jesus? Do you WANT to go to Heaven? If so, the wonderful promise of the Bible is this: “He who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him” (Heb 11:6). So let’s watch as the “light” of Nicodemus’ understanding grows each time we read about him in John’s diary. ACTIVITY: Independently or with a friend, complete the game “Nicode- mus’s De-LIGHT-ful Journey”. a) Read the passages along the bottom. b) Use the answer key to fill in the blanks. WHOLE GROUP: Let’s walk through Nicodemus’s de-LIGHT-ful journey as his understanding grows about who Jesus is and how he can get to Heaven. 1. [2:23] CURIOUS: Nicodemus understood that Jesus was a MIRACLE-WORKER when he saw the miracles Jesus did in Jerusalem. But being curious about Jesus and His amazing power was only the start of Nicodemus’s faith journey; it cer- tainly wasn’t enough to save him (see 2:24; cf Lk 23:8,9). 2. [3:1,2] CAME: Good! Jesus calls each of us to COME to Him personally (Mt 11:28). You can’t truly learn about Jesus merely from books or other people. You need to come to HIM, just like Nicodemus did. Now Nicodemus understood that Jesus was a TEACHER FROM GOD. 74

ACTIVITY: 3. [3:3,4,13] CONSIDERED: Nicodemus had a personal dealing M3 L1 NOTES with Jesus. Jesus explained that a person needed to be born again to enter Heaven. Nicodemus didn’t understand this, so he asked. Jesus loves it when we ask sincere questions and seek answers from Him and His Word. Part of Jesus’ answer was to explain that He was actually the SON OF GOD who came from Heaven (v13) in order to bring us to Heaven. To be born again is to be “born from above”, literally, to be born into God’s family. 4. [3:14-17] CONNECTED: Jesus told Nicodemus a true story from the Old Testament. God’s people were in the wilderness, and they had been bitten by poi- sonous snakes. Ah! Nicodemus knew this story well! God told Moses to lift up a bronze serpent on a pole. When the people looked at the bronze serpent in simple faith, they would be healed from their plague. So, too, Jesus was lifted up on a cross, bearing our sin. Every person who looks to Him in simple faith, believing that He is the only solution to our “plague” called sin, will be for- given. Nicodemus could now understand that, even with all his religion, he was “poisoned” by sin and Jesus was the ONLY WAY to Heaven. 5. [7:50-52] CARED: Yes, Nicodemus has come a long way in his appreciation of Jesus. He had first come to Jesus at night, likely afraid of being identified with Him. But here Jesus is being falsely accused, and Nicodemus openly defends Him. He is now standing true to his own name which means “innocent of blood”. Nico- demus knows that Jesus is INNOCENT and deserving of a fair trial. 6. [19:39-42] CONVINCED: After the death of Jesus, Nicodemus’s light shines bright- est. He prepares Jesus’ body for burial as a KING! “The surprising amount of spice indicates that Nicodemus ultimately recognizes Jesus as king” (Seely). “It was enough spice to bury a king royally” (Borchert). TAKING AIM: SO HERE’S MY BIG QUESTION FOR YOU ALL: At what point do you think Nicodemus was born again, born into God’s family through the forgiveness of his sins? [Teacher Note: The students might wonder how could Nicodemus be born again before Jesus even died on the cross. Forgiveness of sins pre-cross was granted the same way we use credit cards: “The funds are on their way.” For- giveness of sins post-cross is granted the same way we use debit cards: “The funds are currently available.” Both before and after the cross, faith in Christ was/is the criteria for forgiveness. In the OT, people looked ahead to Christ’s death on the cross. Today, we look back at it.] Was it back here when he was just curious? No (see Jn 2:24). When he came to Jesus? No. He was still confused. Was it after he considered and connected Jesus to the Old Testament story of Moses and the serpent? The Bible doesn’t actually say that he made that connection. What about when he publicly defended Jesus or buried His body? There’s no sure evidence there either. Here’s the interesting thing. We don’t read anything else about Nicodemus after Jesus’ burial. Nowhere in the Bible do we read that Nicodemus was actually born again. He may have been — perhaps after Jesus rose from the dead — but the Bible is silent on this matter. 75

Here’s what we DO read: Joseph and Nicodemus both came to bury the body. Both M3 L1 NOTES are secretive in their dealings with Jesus. But only Joseph is referred to as a disciple. There is no such clear description given of Nicodemus (see Jn 19:38-39). So we’re left without a solid answer. There’s no doubt that Nicodemus had a lot of light shone on his understanding to show him that he was a sinner and that Jesus came to be his Savior. But, at best, John leaves us with only the hope that Nicodemus might have been saved. APPLICATION: Let me ask you: If this was your last day on planet Earth, would your family and friends be left with the same uncertainty about where you would be? They might say, “He/She was very religious.” So was Nic- odemus, but that did nothing for his soul. They might say, ‘He/She was popular…or wealthy…or came from a good family.’ All these things were true of Nicodemus. [Referring to the activity sheet]: Notice the growing light behind your ‘C’ words. You might even consider yourself to be CURIOUS about Jesus. You’ve COME here to our class to learn more about Him. You’ve even CONSIDERED what He says about how to get to Heaven. Maybe you Care deeply about Him and are even CONVINCED that He is who He says He is. But, as Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (3:3 ESV). In closing, I want to make as clear as I can how YOU can step into this light and be born again. And I want to use the same words that Jesus spoke to Nicodemus — perhaps the best-known words in the whole Bible: John 3:16. Can anyone quote it? Notice three simple truths in this verse. [For effect, write the word FACT, and explain. Then erase the F to spell ACT, and explain. Add the letter P to make PACT, and explain]: 1. A FACT: “God so loved the world…” Yes, God loves you personally! That’s a fact right from the Bible. 2. AN ACT: “That He GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON.” God’s love moved Him to give His Son to die on the cross to take our punishment. Jesus did this willingly because “the Son of God…loved me and gave Himself for me” (Gal 2:20). 3. A PACT: God makes this unbreakable promise: Any sinner who “believes in Him will NOT perish but have eternal life.” CONCLUSION: What are you going to do with the light God has given you today? We’re left guessing about Nicodemus. But God doesn’t want you to guess where you’ll spend eternity. He wants you to KNOW. I want to leave you with one more statement that our Tour Guide, John, wrote, as guided by God’s Spirit: “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 Jn 5:13 ESV). You can KNOW today that you have been born again — born into God’s family. Make it certain before you leave. 76

PICK-A-NUMBER!

Preliminary Draft MISSION 3: JESUS’ STATEMENTS — HE SAID...WHAT? LESSON 2: JESUS TELLS A SINFUL WOMAN: “THAT’S NOT YOUR HUSBAND” BIG IDEA: KEY TEXT:  CURRICULUM: U_ L_ NOTES TAKING AIM: PREPARE: Place an Almond Joy chocolate bar in a locked tool box. Place the key to the lock in your Bible at Psalm 32:1. Draw the “PICK- A-NUMBER” chart (left) on your board exactly as shown below. Find two pictures: a gear indicator as found on a car dashboard; the Washington Monument. Have on hand a pen, a straw, and a paper clip (or other items) for illustration in Digging Deeper. OPENER: [Choose a student.] If you were to choose a number from this chart [point to the number chart on the wall], do you think that I could guess that number? Well, I think I can! In fact, I can tell you the exact number you pick without even looking at the chart. [Note: After the student picks a number, ask, “Is your number in Column A?” [Stu- dent answers.] “Is your number in column B?” [Student answers.] Ask this ques- tion for each of the five columns. For effect, close your eyes while asking these questions. Solution: Add the first number from each column in which their number is found to discover the mystery number. This requires a bit of multi-task- ing. Key: You can remember the numbers at the top of each column by noting the pattern. Simply add the numbers mentally as the student responds.] TRANSITION: Were any of you impressed by my special ability?! You can be sure I had a trick to do it. Ah, but Jesus…now Jesus was truly impressive — in many ways — without any tricks at all! One day, He spoke to a woman at a well. Though she and Jesus had never met before, He told her some of the things that she had done, giving specific details about her life. After they had a long talk, she went back into town and told her neighbors, “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” (Jn 4:29). It was true; Jesus DID know every detail of this woman’s life — the good, the bad, the ugly, every sin she had ever committed in thought, word, and action. But there’s something much MORE amazing than that. With all that Jesus knew about her, Jesus STILL loved her! 79

Have you ever messed up and afterward people started treating you differently? U_ L_ NOTES Maybe they made fun of you, stopped hanging out with you, gossiped about you. That’s painful, isn’t it? Imagine if I held up a screen over your head which could display every bad thing you’ve done this past week, or this past month. What about your whole life? How many friends do you think you’d still have? The woman in our story was likely an outcast in her own community. But then she met Jesus, someone who truly loved her even though she was a sinner. And guess what: This same Jesus also loves YOU and ME, even though we are also sinners. ACTIVITY: There were no cars in Jesus’ day, but to help us follow the story, I want to use a gear indicator, like you’d find on a car’s dash- board. Why? Because that is precisely how the conversation went that day: from PARK to REVERSE to NEUTRAL to DRIVE. [Show a picture of P / R / N / D.] I’d like you to read the story for yourself and see if you can connect each part of the conversation with its corresponding marking on the gear indicator. [Give students about 10-15 minutes to complete the activity.] WHOLE GROUP: PARK: Jesus ‘parks’ himself beside a well in a town called Sy- char. Though Jesus is the Son of God, He is also a real man who became tired and thirsty. But that wasn’t His main reason for stopping at that well. He was thirsty for souls, and He had a divine appointment with a woman who was thirsty for inner joy and peace (Jn 4:4). There are two shocking facts about Jesus ‘parking’ Himself here, of all places: 1. Jesus’ ROUTE: It’s significant that Jesus took this route. He was traveling from Jerusalem in southern Israel back up to Galilee in northern Israel. It’s been said that ‘the shortest distance between two points is a straight line’ (Archimedes, Greek Mathematician), and that’s the route Jesus took here. But that’s not the route any other religious Jew would have taken. Why not? Jesus was a Jew; this woman was a Samaritan. Jews hated Samaritans because they had inter-married and had mixed the worship of the true God with the worship of false gods (see 2 Kings 17:6, 24). Because of this, Jews would NOT take the route Jesus took. They would do anything to avoid Samaria, going around it even though it meant several more days’ journey. But Jesus loved this woman and wanted her to come into a right relationship with God. Therefore, he ‘needed to go through Samaria’ (Jn 4:4 NKJ). 2. Jesus’ REQUEST: Jesus asked the woman for a drink of water. This surprised the woman for two reasons: a) Ethnic background: Again, He was a Jew; she was a Samaritan. b) Gender: It was uncommon for a man to speak publicly to a woman in this way. Have you ever felt marginalized because of your background or gender — some- thing you have no control over? That is very painful, no doubt. What I love about Jesus is that those superficial things make no difference to Him. The Bible says that He is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34), meaning we’re all on the same level with Him; He loves the rich and the poor, male and female, every person from every background. He talks to a high-ranking man in 80

chapter 3, then a despised woman in chapter 4. Most would just consider this U_ L_ NOTES woman a nobody, but Jesus gives her the same attention that He gave to Nico- demus. And this same Jesus made you! And He loves you deeply, as He loved this woman. He ‘needed to go through Samaria’ because He wanted to rescue her. And He’s here in this room today — though we can’t see Him — and wants to rescue you. From what? From your sin. Jesus broke down all these barriers simply by talking with her. Then He made a shocking statement: He offered the woman LIVING water. Like Nicodemus, she was confused at first, thinking Jesus was talking only about physical water (v 11). But Jesus meant something much greater, something that would last. COOL FACT: In the Greek, we can read verses 13 and 14 like this: “Everyone who [con- tinues to drink] of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever [takes one drink] of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.” The point Jesus was mak- ing? At best, physical water only quenches our physical thirst temporarily. But the water Jesus offers — spiritual water — quenches our spiritual longings and needs forever! [Talk about her (and our) spiritual longings: pardon for sin / peace for a troubled heart / purpose for life / promise of hope beyond death. Most people try to fill these longings through physical means. This woman, for example, tried to find satisfaction in human relationships. But she still felt empty.] ILLUSTRATION: Have a tool box with a chocolate bar inside, like Almond Joy. Lock it up. Then invite a student to come and try to open it with…a pen, a straw, a paper clip (for example). “Just as there is only one key to open this box, there is only one Key to open the way to the complete and lasting satisfaction and joy that God wants to give us. Our own solutions will never work. Jesus is the only Key.” [Open your Bible to Psalm 32:1 and allow the key to fall from its pages. Read the verse: “How JOYful is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is cov- ered!” (HCSB). Hand the key to the student to unlock the tool box and remove the Al- mond JOY chocolate bar.] The woman longed for this kind of lasting joy and so immediately asked Jesus for it. But…hold on! Jesus shifted the conversation into… REVERSE: Before Jesus could give this woman living water — the spiritual blessings I just mentioned — she would need to confront the issue of her sin. Before conversion there must be conviction! Jesus asked a searching question, taking her into reverse, backward into her past. “Jesus said to her, ‘Go, call your husband, and come here’” (v.16). OUCH! She knew the truth. She was, at that time, living with a man who was NOT her husband. She was living in sin. So she replied: “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her,  “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’;  for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true” (vv 17,18 ESV). 81

These words must have pierced her conscience1 because her immediate reaction U_ L_ NOTES was: “You must be a prophet from God!” 1. It should be pointed out How was she going to deal with her sin in front of this Man? He clearly had that her sin, per se, was not God-like knowledge of her life. Well, she did what most people do. She tried in having the five husbands to shift into… (perhaps these were legiti- mate marriages seeing that NEUTRAL: She changed the topic away from her sin. What did she start talking about Jesus referred to them as her instead? Religion and, more specifically, the proper place to worship (see vv 20-24). “husbands”, see Mk 12:18-27. The sin confronting her now Have you ever tried this with your parents or teachers? You’re caught red-handed, so was that she was living with you try to change the subject or you make excuses. [Perhaps provide a a man who was NOT her hus- personal example.] Maybe this has worked for you. But it didn’t work for this woman band. She may well have because Jesus is no ordinary man. He is God. He sees right into our heart (see Heb been despised by her com- 4:13). And He is about to “drive” home His point. Watch this! munity, seeing as she trav- elled over half a mile to a DRIVE: Like Nicodemus, the light of this woman’s understanding about Jesus grew well outside her home city, at gradually. Note how she refers to Jesus in these verses: the hottest part of the day when few people would be ▪ v 9 (a Jew) at the well. Not only was she ▪ vv 11, 15 (Sir – a gentleman, a title showing respect) a Samaritan despised by ▪ v 19 (a prophet) Jews, but she may well have ▪ But then in verse 25,26 Jesus reveals that actually HE IS THE CHRIST SHE HAS been a Samaritan despised by her fellow Samaritans. BEEN WAITING FOR! Literally, He declared, ‘I who speak to you, I AM.’ HE IS the Maybe you can identify with living water. HE IS the One who completely satisfies our deepest longing. Did she this woman on some level.] believe Him? Read verses 28,29. SUMMARY ILLUSTRATION: ▪ I want to ask you a question. In our last lesson, we thought about a religious man who carefully obeyed the law, was rich and powerful, was well-educated — he had everything going for him. Now here is a sinful woman who had none of these things. All she had was the shame of her sin. Which of the two was closest to get- ting into Heaven? [Most will probably say the religious man.] ▪ Actually, this woman is closer to getting into Heaven than Nicodemus was. Let me explain: Imagine that two friends (let’s call them ‘Nick’ for Nicodemus and ‘Sam’ for the Samaritan woman) go to Washington. Nick and Sam see the Wash- ington Monument down the road, and they decide to race to the top. Nick bolts off and gets a major head start up the 897 steps. (He heard that the fastest time up the stairs is 6 minutes and 42 seconds. Being competitive, Nick wants to beat that time.) Poor Sam only makes it to the door at ground level when Nick is al- ready halfway up. ▪ Who’s closest to the top? You’d say Nick, right? But hold on… ▪ At Step 523, the staircase is blocked off for repairs. No one is allowed to go beyond that point. Meanwhile, down on ground level, Sam notices an elevator that will take her to the top in only 70 seconds. ▪ So there’s Nick stuck at Step 523. And there’s Sam pressing the elevator button at ground level. Who’s going to get to the top first? [Field responses.] ▪ In order for Nick to get to the top, he needs to first come down 523 steps and then get into the elevator. All Sam has to do is step into the elevator. ▪ Here’s the point: For someone to get ‘to the top’, so to speak — to get to Heaven — they need to FIRST humble themselves, to come down to ground zero and admit that they are a sinner. Religious Nicodemus thought he was close to Heaven because he was a good person, a law-keeper. The Samaritan woman probably thought she was far from Heaven because of her sin. But this meant that she was already at ground zero! She just had to step into the “Elevator of Forgiveness”. She was actually closer to Heaven than Nicodemus was. 82

APPLICATION: Would you consider yourself, like Nicodemus, to be a pretty U_ L_ NOTES good person that God will have no problem letting into Heaven? If so, you’ve got a big problem: the staircase of human goodness is blocked off with this sign: “I have come to call not those who think they are righteous…” (Lk 5:32a NLT). Or are you like the woman of Samaria? You already know that you’re a sinner and that you can’t impress God on your own. Happily, hanging above the Elevator of For- giveness is another sign, which includes the whole verse: “I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent” (Lk 5:32, NLT). Please notice that word “repent”. Have you repented yet? To repent means to ‘change your mind’ so that you will also change direction. The ultimate destination for every person without Jesus is the Lake of Fire. To change direction and be sure you’re headed for Heaven to be with Jesus forever, you first need to change your mind about who you are — a guilty sinner deserving the judgment of God, and change your mind about who Jesus is — the Christ, the Son of God, the only One who can re- move your guilt and forgive your sin. Why? Because He has already paid your sin- debt by dying in your place and rising from the dead, proving His power over sin, death, and Hell itself. When you repent and in simple faith ask the Lord Jesus to for- give and cleanse you, you are instantly made brand new and are immediately Heaven-bound! This news so thrilled the woman that she left her waterpot behind and ran back to town to tell other thirsty Samaritans to come and meet Jesus! I love how this story ends! Remember, Jews and Samaritans did not get along. So what do you think would have happened if Jesus would have ventured into the city to meet the Samaritans without first going through this woman? Would they have received and welcomed this Jew? Probably not (see Lk 9:52-55)! But when this woman went back to her people with her joyful testimony of forgiveness and a changed life, her fellow Samaritans were much more inclined to listen. They could see in her some real evidence that the message was true. And so we see that those Samaritans were willing to go out and meet Jesus for themselves. [Read verses 28-30. ] But that wasn’t all. [Read verses 39-42]. How exciting! Jesus, the Light of the world, shone on this woman, exposing her sin and her need of forgiveness. Then SHE became a shining light in her neighborhood so that others came to Jesus too! Note: At first, “many” believed (v 39)…but the light kept spreading, and “many more believed” (v 41), resulting in this great declaration: “Now WE believe…that this is in- deed the Christ, the Savior of the world” (v 42). “When you consider how little spiritual truth this woman knew, her zeal and witness put us to shame” (Warren Wiersbe). The WORLD — “For God so loved the world…” (Jn 3:16). This includes you. Jesus wants to be your Savior too. And when you receive this living water, like the Samaritan woman did, you then have the privilege of carrying this water to other thirsty friends and family members. 83

CONCLUSION: “Jesus wants us to take this same journey with Him. He has U_ L_ NOTES ‘parked’ Himself beside us today through His Word. Right now, He is offering you living water, an inner joy that can’t be gained by anything in this world. But He can’t give you this water until you willingly to go into ‘reverse’ to confront your sinful nature and the sins of your past, and come down to ground zero to acknowledge that you can’t impress God with your own good- ness. If you try to remain ‘neutral’ about your sin, you’ll never step into the El- evator of Forgiveness to receive the gift and promise of eternal life. You must allow God’s Word to ‘drive’ you to the point of complete surrender: a guilty sinner coming humbly to a loving Savior to receive His perfect pardon.” 84
