Kiewit Luminarium is a place to explore astonishing phenomena and learn with your hands, nurturing creativity and innovation for everyone. This will not only be a building, but a destination transforming the Lewis & Clark Landing at The RiverFront. Kiewit Luminarium
Knoll is a constellation of design-driven brands and people, working together with our clients to create inspired modern interiors. Since 1938, we’ve been thinking about how people interact with their environments, and how their environments impact what they do. These are the ideas essential to our work.
The Kiewit Luminarium is an innovative community space and learning environment that is part workshop, part museum. It’s a place for hands-on experiences in science, math, engineering and technology. The interior walls are constructed with custom milled 4 foot by 8 foot sheets of plywood that act as “pegboard” for interactivity and modularity. Kiewit Luminarium
Our founders, Hans and Florence Knoll, embraced the creative genius at the Bauhaus School and the Cranbrook Academy of Art to create new types of furniture and environments for the workplace. Their approach, where craftsmanship joined with technology through the use of design, anchors our perspective and shapes the values we endeavor to live by today.
The interior space is designed to be warm and inviting to suggest that science is friendly, familiar and approachable. The building is thought of as a “container” like the classic Nebraska vernacular “machine-shed,” simple, honest, performative — where apertures in the aluminum exterior envelope strictly adhere to optimal shading based on the orientation of the façade. The building geometry emerged out of an apparent “grain” to the landscape that organizes the building into two forms. Kiewit Luminarium
Less than a century after their construction, Modernist masterpieces— critical documents in the history of architecture — are being routinely demolished, disfigured or abandoned. As part of Knoll’s effort to contribute to the communities where we do business, we are the founding sponsor of the World Monuments Fund (WMF) Modernism at Risk program. WMF is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the world’s architectural heritage.
The new privately-funded, community-backed science center aims to become a family-friendly destination when it opens in 2023. It will not only serve a critical need in Omaha’s cultural amenities, it will help inspire children’s interest in STEM. Kiewit Luminarium
Design transcends style, it creates coherence in a chaotic world. Steeped in the history of modernism, our vision is carried forward today by the most talented contemporary designers to bring order and beauty to life and work. Well-designed objects deliver efficiency, joy and satisfaction to the people who use them.
This new, state-of-the-art space is where we’ll connect the next generation of engineers and designers with programming and exhibits to spark their curiosity and fuel future careers. Kiewit Luminarium is a place for discovery. Kiewit Luminarium
Today, we are inspiring a new generation with a dedication to the most innovative and dynamic designs for corporations, healthcare organizations, educational institutions and civic centers.
