6 Annual Review 2017/2018It’s all in the backswing...A message from Executive Director, Elisabeth Rees-Johnstone Annual reviews are an organizational rhythm which remind us about the various activities we’ve been fortunate to participate in – and there have been numerous OISE CPL activities in 2017-2018. Yet what annual reviews can’t readily illustrate is the commitment, spirit and effort of a team and community; working and learning together to execute on a vision. To really appreciate outcomes, you need to pause and appreciate the ‘how’ behind the ‘what’ – and understand that it’s within the ‘how zone’ where organizational learning happens. In considering the ‘how zone’, I am reminded of the dart experiment by Kitsantas and Zimmerman (2002) who divided students into two groups of learners: Team Performance and Team Learning. Team Performance was told to throw the darts as close to the centre of the dart board (essentially, dive in). Team Learning started with guidance on how to hold the dart, the position of the arm and body to throw the dart and eventually worked up to target the centre of the dart board. When it came time to assess who could hit the centre of the dart board, Team Learning outperformed Team Performance, and more interestingly, Team Learning also loved the process which led them to achieve hitting the bull’s eye. The lesson of this experiment is a reminder that learning is a valuable process – one where you have to slow down sometimes to reflect, determine a focus, develop a plan and practice. As my dear colleague reminds me “it’s all in the backswing”. 2017-2018 has been a professionally rewarding year with much to celebrate in terms of outputs: new programs, new destinations, new colleagues, new partnerships and new technologies. Yet it’s the inputs and the commitment to learning – the backswing – demonstrated by the enthusiasm, creativity and support of the OISE CPL team, and extended OISE and University of Toronto communities, which inspire.
