In this unit, we will look at Past Simple and Past Progressive tenses. Past Progressive We use the Past Progressive to talk about actions which have gone on repeatedly or continuously in the past. We use this tense for descriptions and also when we want to show that an action was interrupted. 149
The Past Progressive tense is formed from the past tense of the verb be and the - ing form of the verb. • We were watching a documentary when the phone rang. • The actors weren't listening when the director yelled, 'Cut!' • Was it raining when the crew arrived on the set? Past Simple We use the Past Simple to talk about completed actions in the past. With many verbs, we add –ed to form the Past Simple. These verbs are called regular verbs. However, some verbs do not follow a pattern. They have their own forms. They are called irregular verbs. • The screenwriter finished the script last week. • Hollywood became famous for making films in the 1920s. To form the negative and questions in the Past Simple, we use did/didn't + the base form. • Where did the movie take place? • Did you like the movie? • Sam didn't get to the movie set on time. Markers of Time Markers of time can help us understand that an action is happening in the past. Examples of markers that indicate the past include: earlier, yesterday, two days ago, last year. 150

When we read or listen, we need to try to identify which details are the most important. For example: My best friend is called Jenna. I've known her since we were children. She's an actress. She moved to France two years ago and she lives in Paris. Jenna has had quite a lot of success as an actress. She's been in several short films and commercials. I can't wait to see her again this summer. After reading this paragraph, we now know the following important details about Jenna: • She is the writer's best friend. 151
• She is an actress. • She has lived in Paris for two years. • She has been in many short films and commercials. Important details may answer the following questions: • What? – actions and objects (What does Jenna do?) • How much, how many? – quantities, prices (How many films has Jenna been in?) • When? – dates and times (When did Jenna move to Paris?) • Who? – names and occupations (Who is Jenna?) • Where? – places and addresses (Where does Jenna live?) When you are reading, you can use a technique called scanning to find a specific detail in a text. Run your eyes over the text looking for the specific piece of information you need. Scanning can help you understand texts with a lot of detailed information, such as posters and advertisements. Sometimes the information you are looking for is in more than one text, so it is even more important to be able to scan quickly to find specific details. Remember, you don't have to understand every word of a text, just the important details.
