Seniors Who Skype Facilitator Guide

UNIT OVERVIEW 1.1 Background and Goal. The goal of this instruction is to convey the knowledge and expertise in the usage of Skype for seniorcitizens to connect, create and maintain friendships. 1.2 Introduction to the UnitThis unit seeks to provide an effective instructional resource for the training of trainers in various on theusage of communication application software – Skype. Trainers are to be trained on what Skype is, howit can be accessed and how it functions. 1.3 About This Guide This guide is for any Facilitator who would want to instruct others on the usage of Skype It is our belief that a judicious adherence to the provided guidance in this instruction would we of utmost benefit in achieving the stated goal. 1.4 Learning Objectives • The learner will know what Skype is and what it is used for • The learner will be able to successfully download, install and sign into Skype • The learner will be able to create a Skype account • The learner will be able to find and add contacts on Skype • The learner will be able to initiate a video call on SkypePRE-FACILITATION PLANNING 2.1 Preparing Students Send a pre-workshop letter that states the following:We are looking forward to having you join us for the Skype training program.. In preparation for theprogram please review at least three social platforms similar to and including Skype and answer thefollowing questions: 1. What are the benefits of each? 2. How will it help make their job easier? 1. Bring an example of a program they would like to include Skype.

You will need to bring your laptop with power cord to the meeting to complete the appropriate setupand training. Your laptop requires the following software to run Skype Windows XP with SP3, Vista, 7, 8or 8.1. Identify if your laptop has a built in webcam or you require an external webcam for video calls. Ifso, buy and install the webcam and bring the webcam with you. Check your microphone and speakersettings to ensure calls will be successfully completed. By the end of the program you will have Skypesetup and understand how to use it effectively to facilitate your training programs. o Hands-On Simulation to assess course proficiencyLogistical ConcernsPrior to course delivery, students should ensure the following in effort to not delay or interrupt coursesdue to technical difficulties. • The minimum PC/Laptop requirements have been met. • All equipment such as headphones, speakers, and webcams have been tested and are 100% operational.• Ensure a backup Internet access option is available in-case one option is not available. For instance, dial-up option or ability to re-locate to a place where Internet is available.INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY AND SEQUENCING4.1 Lesson OverviewFacilitator (Media) 1. The first section of the lesson explores what Skype is and the benefits of using Skype with PowerPoint. The difference between synchronous and asynchronous collaboration is delivered with a graphic organizer and narrator. 2. The second section models step-by-step instructions of downloading the Skype application, setting it up.Learner 3. The third section illustrates the steps to creating contacts within the Skype 1. application. There is a demonstration using screen shots within PowerPoint on how to set up a group call and join an existing group call. Prior to the lesson, the learner will have pretest questions to consider during instruction. In the first section, the learner will watch a PowerPoint of what Skype is and the benefits of using Skype. Then, the learner will engage in a discussion.2. The learner, in the second section, will observe a step-by-step demonstration using multi media presentation on how to download, set up, and create a user account on Skype. The learner will have the option to practice the steps and download the Skype application to their computer.3. The third section of the lesson has the learner observing a brief recording on how to find contacts within the Skype application. Next, the learner will listen to a narrator as he or she watches instructions using screen shots of each step in the process of creating a group call and joining a pre-existing group call. Finally, the learner will briefly go over professional etiquette in a business meeting. The learner will listen to a recorded audio of an online business meeting, and he or she will choose proper and unprofessional business etiquette.

4.2 Sequence of LessonFacilitatorIntroduction • Welcomes Everyone to training session • Introduces Self • Delegate someone to pass out handouts/notes to attendees • Discusses Purpose or Need for Meeting/TrainingInstruction• (Ice Breaker)The facilitator will ask the learners to get into a group of five (smaller groups if needed) and discover 5 things all five members have in common. Have a list compiled (included in handout). 3min. to discover/2m to share. ---> leads into Pretest: • The learner will read the Overview from the PowerPoint slide that informs him or her on the upcoming lesson or training. Includes general facts for low ability adult learners. • The learner will read the Pretest from the PowerPoint slide. These questions are for the learner to consider during the training or lesson. • Facilitator will read the overview (brief description of today's goals) from PowerPoint slide. • Facilitator will read questions from pretest (open-ended questions for learners to consider during lesson) from PowerPoint slide to stimulate learner thinking during lesson. (See Pre assessment strategy on pg ?.)Section 1: Facilitator • The facilitator will discuss what Skype is and the multiple benefits and the flexibility Skype provides referring to PowerPoint slide as needed.Section 1: Learner • The learner will watch an interactive multimedia presentation on what Skype is and the multiple benefits and flexibility Skype where they participate in discussion, quizzes, and hands on applications. •.Section 2: Facilitator • The facilitator will show multimedia procedures on how to download Skype. o The facilitator will explain to the learners how to go to Skype.com. o The facilitator will demonstrate to the learners to click the download Skype button at the center of the page. o The facilitator will explain there are many different platforms for Skype. This tutorial is only for Desktop, but it can be applied to other platforms using the same steps. o The facilitator will show the screen shot of clicking the green button to download \"Get Skype for Windows Desktop.\"

o The facilitator will explain that their computer will want to save the file \"SkypeSetupFull\" once it pops up. The facilitator must explain the importance of noticing the path or location on the user's computer where it is being saved before clicking save. o The facilitator should, at this time, allow them to demonstrate understanding by downloading Skype with the computers provided in the training session. o The facilitator will walk around the training room being accessible to all learners for questions or problems. • The facilitator will demonstrate how to set up a Skype account using screen shots in PowerPoint that show the step-by-step procedure. o The facilitator will explain how to get to Skype's account set up page. o The facilitator will explain and illustrate putting all necessary information into the user information boxes which include last name, first name, e-mail address, language, and country or region. o The facilitator will then explain the process of creating a user id and password for Skype. The facilitator should remind the learners their password should be easy to remember but hard for someone to guess. o The facilitator will explain the text inside the box must be typed exactly in their input box for verification. o The facilitator will then explain the \"Yes and continue\" button again for the TOS and Privacy Agreement. o At this point in training, the facilitator is helping any learners as necessary with setting up an account with Skype.Section 2: Learner • The learner will watch screen shots of step by step procedures to downloading Skype in PowerPoint (handout included). o The learner will go to Skype.com. The home page of Skype. o The learner will click the download Skype button at the center of the page. o The learner will click the green button download \"Get Skype for Windows Desktop.\" o The learner will save the application file \"SkypeSetupFull\" to his or her computer. o The learner has completed the download portion of Skype and must now begin the \"set up\" phase in training. o. o The learner will click \"I agree\" to Skype's Terms of Service and Skype's Privacy Policy. o The learner will uncheck \"Make Bing my Search Engine\" and \"Make MSN my Homepage.\" The learner will then click \"continue.\" o The learner has completed the setup portion for Skype. The learner must now create a free user account to use Skype services.

• The learner will watch screen shots of step by step procedures to creating an account with Skype in PowerPoint. (handout included) o The learner will go to Skype's Account set up page and click \"New User.\" o The learner will fill out his or her user information including last name, first name, and e-mail address. The learner will type in the language the learner speaks and from what country or region he or she is. o The learner will be prompted to create a \"user name\" and a \"password\" that will allow them to sign into Skype. o The learner will need to verify and type the text in the box below the picture on the screen. o The learner will click \"Yes and Continue\" if they agree and have read Skype's Terms of Use Policy and Privacy Agreement. o At this point, the learner has completed setting up an account with Skype. The learner should go to the sign on page to verify the log on works correctly.Section 3: Facilitator • The facilitator will use screen shots using PowerPoint to show step-by-step processes on how to create contacts in Skype. o The facilitator will sign into Skype. o The facilitator will show the screen shot in PowerPoint and describe the process of typing in the contacts name, email, or Skype user id in the contact search box. o The facilitator will show the screen shot of the slide that shows the results of the query. By clicking on the contact he or she wants, the facilitator explains \"Add to Contact.\" • The facilitator will use step-by-step screen shots in PowerPoint to illustrate the process on how to join a Skype call. o The facilitator will explain that the learner should identify the contact he or she believes is in the group call and click their name. o The facilitator will demonstrate by typing inside the conversation box that pops up asking to be added to the group. o The facilitator should explain to all users to be patient and wait for a response from the contact. o The facilitator will show the screen shot of the confirmed request in the separate group chat message. The facilitator should also point out that learners can see this window in the \"Recent\" list. o The facilitator will explain the option of saving the group to the contacts list by right- clicking the conversation and selecting \"Save Group In Your Contacts.\" o Upon finishing the training, the facilitator should allow the learners to practice each phase of the Section 3 training as he or she assists those learners in need. (See Formative Assessment on page ?)Section 3: Learner

• Learner will watch facilitator narrate the step by step process of creating contacts in Skype using screen shots and PowerPoint. (handout included) o Learner will sign into Skype. o Learner will locate the search box on the left side of screen and type the contact's name, e-mail, or Skype's user i.d. into the box and click \"enter or search.\" o The learner will click the contact he or she wants that matched the search criteria. The learner must click \"Add to Contacts.\"
