Michael Faraday Michael Faraday was born on September 22, 1791 in Newington, Surrey, now a part of South London. He made a great contribution to science and although a humble man who would not want to seek fame and a great place for himself, he nevertheless is credited with making many discoveries and along with this he created some in- ventions as well. The inventions and discoveries that were made by Michael Faraday have changed the world in which we live in today - the very basis of the technology used in society today is based up- on the work he did. The contributions he made to electrical science formed many of the foundations on which others have built. Also within chemical sci- ence, he made some major developments. Such was the standing of Faraday that he was offered a knighthood by Queen Victoria, and also during his life he was asked if he would like to be buried in Westminster Abbey - an honour accorded to kings and queens of the land and also to great people like Isaac Newton. However, a humble man, he de- clined. Today we can remember Michael Faraday for his inventions and discoveries. Michael Faraday's main invention & discoveries 1. Electric Motor: Although in 1820 Hans Christian Orsted and Andre-Marie Ampere were credited with discovering the fact that an electric current created a magnetic field, it was Faraday who invented the first electric motor in 1822. 2. Discovered Benzene: Faraday's early discoveries were associated with chemistry. In 1820 produced the first known synthetically made compound of carbon and chlorine - hexachloroethane, C2Cl6 and tetrachloroethane, C2Cl4. Then in 1825 he made benzene C6H6 - a key substance in today's chemistry, and also one that formed the basis of much organic chemistry. Benzene (C6H6): Molecular structure Chemical representation of benzene that was isolated by Michael Faraday 3. Electromagnetic Induction: In 1831, Faraday published his discovery of electro- magnetic induction. In a famous experiment he undertook, he created a basic trans- former. He made two coils by wrapping two separate lengths of wire around opposite sides of an iron ring. He connected one coil to a galvanometer, and the other he con- nected to a battery. As he connected and disconnected the battery, he noticed the gal- vanometer kick. This effect is now known as mutual induction, and forms the basis of transformers. 4. Electromagnetic generator: Faraday had learned about electromagnetism and also motors, he applied this to inventing a generator. He had looked at the magnetic lines of force and deduced that the magnitude of current produced with the movement of magnets was proportional to the speed of the motion and the number of lines of force being cut the motion. He invented a generator known as the Faraday disc - this was the first electromagnetic gener- ator of electricity - converting mechanical energy into elec- trical energy. 5. Electrolysis: Combining his expertise in chemistry and electrical science, Faraday formulated his two laws of electrolysis from his experiments and discoveries: Faraday's first law of electrolysis: Faraday's first law of electrolysis states that during electrolysis the amount of a substance deposited on an electrode of an electrolytic cell is directly proportional to the quantity of electricity that is passed through the cell. Faraday's second law of electrolysis: Faraday's second law of electrolysis states that the quantities of different elements deposited by a given amount of electricity are in the ratio of their chemical equivalent weights. These laws provided the basic understanding of electrolysis that has formed the basis of the technology for many years. Michael Faraday invented and discovered a huge amount in his lifetime. In addition these inventions and discoveries were very significant, forming the basis for many more developments in the future. Maxwell's work and his equations were based upon the work undertaken by Faraday, and so were many other future developments. It is also interesting to note that Albert Einstein had the photos of three famous scientists on his desk as an inspiration - one of them was that of Faraday. The great personality was died in 1867 leaving as his monument a new conception of physical reality. FAITH During my stay in Ramanathapuram, my relationship with him {Iyadurai Solomon, teacher of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam in Schwartz High School, Ramanathapuram} grew beyond that of teacher and pupil. In his company, I learnt that one could exercise enormous influence over the events of one’s own life. Iyadurai Solomon used to say, “To succeed in life and achieve results, you must understand and master three mighty forces-desire, belief, and expectation.” Iyadurai Solomon, who later became a Reverend, taught me that before any- thing I wanted could happen, I had to desire it intensely and be absolutely certain it would happen. To take an example from my own life, I had been fascinated by the mysteries of the sky and the flight of birds from my early childhood. I used to watch cranes and sea- gulls soar into flight and longed to fly. Simple, provincial boy though I was, I was con- vinced that one day I, too, would soar up into the skies. Indeed, I was the first child from Rameswaram to fly. Iyadurai Solomon was a great teacher because he instilled in all the children a sense of their own worth. Solomon raised my self-esteem to a high point and convinced me, the son of parents who had not had the benefits of education, that I too could aspire to become whatever I wished. “With faith, you can change your destiny,” he would say. Although connected, medical experts have suggested social distancing as one of the perfect solutions to fight against the new evil. Our honourable prime minister – Narendra Modi ji indicated how covid-19 chain can be splintered with the 21 days country lock -down. But to flatten the curve of covid-19, the lock-down must be respected & accepted by 130 crore Indians altogether. Youth in India constitutes about more than one-fourth of the total population. We as a respon- sible youth of this country should participate in this battle against the zoonotic disease. Now, let’s understand the role of youth in this battle. To name some of them from the canvas of his- tory – Lenin, the Russian youth had a major contribution to the Russian revolution likewise Mazzini & Bhagat Singh also contributed their role for the country. 24 * 7 WhatsApp group with the right information about the virus. WhatsApp/social media groups always have as much as traffic on our road. Every religious activity has been on halt in lieu of corona-virus outbreak, still if we see any of the gathering around. It’s our responsibility to guide and report if required. Admittedly, there is much blot about being tested positive for covid-19 and facing quarantine for a couple of week(s). But “whatever gets measured gets managed” The outbreak of coronavirus has also affected the mental health of humans as everyone reacts differently to stressful situations. So, in this hour of stress/anxiety let’s spread the right knowledge, right humours, right videos and ensure them that we are going to win this battle. To understand better “it is not the corona-virus, which is dangerous, but it is the quick spread which is a threat”. Let’s us do our part and participate in this battle by staying at home. Alia Meena 5A Ashok and his Basketball Class Once upon a time, there lived a boy named Ashok in Mumbai. He used to go to a basket- ball coaching center. Ashok was a mischievous boy. He used to hurt everybody in his coaching class. All other students complained to the coach. The coach who was very busy would not listen to them. Ashok used to hurt others by keeping his legs from where a play- er is going to run and make them fall . Ashok did this to everybody in his class. One day Ashok’s turn came where Ashok was going to run. There a boy was sitting at some distance and the boy’s leg was on the side where Ashok is going to run. When Ashok ran, he fell down after hitting the boy’s leg. Ashok was in so much pain as he had run very fast and it hurt him so much. During this time no one came for his help as everybody were very angry with him since he used to hurt them in this way quite often. To Ashok’s surprise a boy came for his help, he was Arjun the boy he had hurt many times in the past. Without delay he helped Ashok to stand up on his feet. At that time Ashok realized that he should not have hurt anybody and how important it is to play with right sportsman spirit. From that day onwards he did not hurt anybody and Ashok and Arjun became friends. Later all other boys also became friends with Ashok. Aditi M 6A Moral of the story – As you sow so shall you reap. SHORT STORIES Story of Snoopy It was a cold, foggy morning, and Julie was in no mood to take her dog, Snoopy, out for a walk in the bitter cold. Snoopy himself seemed reluctant to leave his bed near the fireplace. Julie got up and sat with Snoopy near the window of their house, soaking in the warm sun- light. Suddenly, she heard some commotion outside her front door, and hurriedly went to see what it was. As she opened the door, a young, scruffy looking man started running, with the milk bottles he had stolen from her front porch. Snoopy took after the man, ignoring the bitter cold, while Julie ran after them, still in her night robe and slippers. Snoopy tripped two newspaper boys and overturned a garbage can as he pursued the fleeing thief. As Julie turned a corner, she saw the thief slip on the hard ice, milk bottles flying, as Snoopy leaped and caught one of them in his mouth. The thief got away, but snoopy came back happily, his tail wagging, to return the bottle to exhausted Julie, expecting his breakfast. Cowardly Skydiver I saw a small boy standing in the woods and crying. I went towards him. On seeing me com- ing towards him, he started running. I shouted, \"Wait, wait...where are you going?\" Hey wait...\" He stopped. I asked him, “Why did you run? Why were you crying? What had hap- pened?\" He remained quiet. He looked frightened. I said, \"Don't worry. Calm down. Tell me what had happened?\" he said in a shaky voice,\" I am Chhotu. I do odd jobs for earning. It's a festive season. People are buying sweets and crackers. Everyone is busy in weaving their moments of happiness. But no one cares for me, not even my Memsahib. She made me do all the Di- wali safai. In return she gave me old useless crackers. In her absence, I have stolen some sweets and 2 packets of fuljhadis, which she bought for her son. But now I am scared. I have done wrong. Maa will scold me for doing this.” I could sense the pain in his tears. \"Don't worry, I will buy you crackers and sweets\", I said to cheer him up. \"Really Didi\", he said with a gleam in his eyes. We bought lots of crackers and sweets. I accompanied him to his home. He distributed sweets among his friends. The sky sparkled with the fireworks and their faces glowed with smiles. It was indeed the best Diwali ever. Moral: Share your happiness with the ones who need them the most. He slept under the banyan tree keeping his moped next to him. There were some monkeys on the top of the tree. When the cap seller was sleeping, the monkeys came down and opened the bundle and wore the caps. After a while, the cap seller woke up and was shocked to see there were no caps in his bundle. He noticed the monkeys with his caps. He knew that monkeys imitate humans. He removed his cap and dropped it down and the monkeys did the same. MY EXPERIENCE WITH COVID-19 A few weeks ago, my mother and I were both feeling unwell. After evaluating the situation at hand, we decided that it would be best to get ourselves tested for Covid-19, since, between both of us, we were exhibiting all the symptoms of the disease. In my heart I knew that I was going to test positive because in my family, if anything Is supposed to go wrong, I am usually at the receiving end and unfortunately have a strong affinity for diseases. As expected, I test- ed positive, however, thankfully, my mother tested negative. Upon receiving the report, the doctors told us that we had two options- I could either self iso- late or get myself admitted to the common hospital Covid-19 ward. We decided on the latter because it seemed like the safest and most logical option, considering that I was the only per- son in my family affected by the disease and did not want to risk infecting the others. Within the next few hours, I found myself on a hospital bed, surrounded by others, who had also be- come victims to this deadly virus. It was quite unsettling to be in that atmosphere, especially at first, because I was there all alone and was supposed to have no physical contact with my family for the next two weeks. All my life I had imagined that my first experience of staying alone would be in a college hostel, but it was a hospital instead. I resented my father be- cause he didn’t even let me gather my things properly or take a bath in my own bathroom before being admitted but now, I understand that he was simply doing what he thought was necessary. The first couple of days were tough and being in the hospital took some time for getting used to. There was a man who came thrice a day to give us our meals and he was so scared of contracting the virus that he used to throw spoonful of food from six feet away into our plates, rather like a shot-put player. However, by the third day, things started looking up for me as I felt a lot healthier and was sent some goodies from home to cheer me up. Online classes proved to be a blessing in disguise while I was bored in the hospital and I spent most of my time listening to music, studying, talking to friends and family, and of course, resting to heal from the virus. I missed my dog terribly, but I did befriend a few of the hospital cats, much to the nurses’ surprise. The hospital days flew by and before I knew it, I tested negative again and was discharged from the hospital. The outside air had never felt fresher and home food so tasty. It literally felt like I had been released from jail. Finally, I reached home and met my dog after ages, who greeted me with sloppy delight, tails, and fur everywhere. All things considered, although being in the hospital was quite boring and had me disgusted by the end of it, it proved to be a learning experience and I’m sure will help me in college next year. I must say, this was the most negative, a positive experience as well, I have had till date. Ira Srivastava 12 C KENDRIYA VIDYALAYA NO. 1 SHAHIBAUG, AHMEDABAD 120

Sarita Dubey TGT (English) Hope, Remedy of Every Adversity Optimism gives the courage to fight against the direst situation. You have heard this line a number of times in your life and sometimes it must have com- pelled you to think whether it is right or wrong. The answer is a big YES. Optimism or hope is the greatest remedy to fight against any adverse circumstances. If a person is optimistic, he will see the adversity as an opportunity and will try to find a way out of it. As they say, “every cloud has a silver lining” so, in stead of looking at the dark clouds one should see the silver lining in it. In one’s life one encounters many situations where the person seems to have lost everything but the constant effort and perseverance allow him to overcome the hurdles and he can achieve the success. Dedication, determination and discipline along with a positive approach can work as a magic wand. Hope can inspire a defeated king to fight to regain his kingdom, Hope can encourage a tired traveler to move on towards his destination and hope can re- juvenate the spirit of many people to try one last time to achieve their goals of life. It was nothing but this hope which inspired Sir Edmund Hilary to continue his expedition to conquer the Mount Everest. It was nothing but this Hope and belief which enabled Indian Cricket team to lift the World Cup in 1983 by defeating the mighty West Indian. when I say hope and optimism, please do not confuse it with fatalist thinking. If you misunderstand hopefulness believing that merely hoping and sitting quietly in a cor- ner of your house, and your work will be done, then certainly you are going in a wrong di- rection. Hope can not work without hard work and determination. Hope is a spark which ignites the hunger for success and after that it is your determination and hard work which help you to achieve the success. So, in another words, we can say that hope is a bird which perches in your heart and al- ways urges you to move towards your destination. Now-a-days, we hear the terms like depression and stress a lot. If you want to be free from this kind of condition, then develop a positive attitude. Do not allow any negative thought to enter your mind and try to be happy. I know, it is easier to say than to get done, but at least you can try it. Believe me; it is just like other habits, if you will do it day in and day out, you will surely develop the attitude to see the things from a different per- spective. Another thing that a person can do to stay positive in any condition is to say, “why not I” in stead of “why I” If you have this kind of approach, you will see every event as an oppor- tunity and will try to grab it with both hands. For an instance, covid 19 pandemic has a very deadly impact on our life, in a way it has completely changed our lives and perception towards our lives. It has made a negative effect on many people’s mindset, however, many people have taken this pandemic situation as an opportunity to rediscover them- selves by a doing number of different activities. So, again I would like to emphasize on the need of positive approach and hope in your heart. As they say, “obstacles are those trifle things which a man sees when he takes eyes from his goals” Whenever you encounter an unfavourable situation please remember the famous saying, “if winter comes, can spring be far behind” So, be happy, optimistic and keep your focus on your goal. how can we get peace of mind? If you don’t get peace of mind, you will land up in getting only a piece of your mind. So, how can we get peace of mind? Please follow the following ten important principles in life: Never Attempt to Interfere in the Life and Business of Others Unless Sought by Them: Most of us create our own problems by interfering too often in the affairs of others. We do so because somehow we have convinced ourselves that our way is the best way, our logic is the perfect logic and those who do not conform to our way of thinking must be criticized and steered to our direction which we consider the right direction. This thinking denies the existence of individuality and consequently the existence of God. God has created each one of us in a unique way. No two human beings can think or act in exactly the same way. All men or women act the way they do because God within them prompts them that way. Mind your own business and you will keep your peace. Remember, we are here in this world only to im- prove ourselves. If each one applies this principle to his or her own life, then auto- matically everyone in this world would improve themselves and become better. Forgive & Forget: This is the most important pre-requisite to peace of mind. We often develop ill feel- ings inside our heart for the persons who insult, hurt or harm us. We nurture griev- ances. This in turn results in creating tensions within us, resulting in loss of sleep, development of stomach ulcers, and high blood pressure. Although such incidents of being insulted or hurt would have occurred only once, but nourishing of the grief goes on forever by constantly remembering it. Get over this bad habit. Life is too short to waste in such trifles. Forgive, Forget, and march forward in life. . Do Not Crave For Recognition: This world is full of selfish people. They seldom praise anybody without selfish mo- tives. They may praise you today because you are in power or their interests are being served by you. But no sooner than you are powerless or their objectives have been met, they will forget you and may even start finding faults in you. Why do you wish to destroy yourself in striving for their recognition? Their recognition is not worth the aggravation. Do your duties ethically and sincerely for achieving self- satisfaction, without any expectations for achieving recognitions and rewards. Do Not be Jealous: I am sure we all have experienced how jealousy can disturb our peace of mind. If we feel that we have worked harder than our colleagues, but sometimes they get recognized and rewarded, we feel jealous of them. We come across several such experiences in everyday life. Should we be jealous? No! Remember each person's life is shaped by his or her own destiny, which has now become his or her reality. If we are destined to achieve something, nothing in the world can stop us. If we are not so destined, none can help us either. Nothing is gained by blaming others for our misfortune. Jealousy will not get us anywhere; it will only take away our peace of mind. KENDRIYA VIDYALAYA NO. 1 SHAHIBAUG, AHMEDABAD 126

Change Yourself according to the Environment: If you try to change the environment single-handedly, we are bound to fail. In- stead, change yourself to suit your environment. As you do this, even the environ- ment, which has been unfriendly to you, will mysteriously change and seem con- genial and harmonious. Endure What Cannot Be Cured: This is the best way to turn a disadvantage into an advantage. Every day we face numerous inconveniences, ailments, irritations, and accidents that are beyond our control. If we cannot control them or change these situations, we must learn to put up things with them . We must learn to endure them cheerfully. Always believe in yourself and you will stand to gain in terms of patience, inner strength and will power. Do not Bite Off more than You can Chew: This maxim needs to be remembered constantly. We often tend to take more re- sponsibilities on ourselves than what we are capable of carrying out. This is done mainly to satisfy our ego. We should recognize our capabilities and understand our limitations. Why take on additional loads that may create more worries and stress? We cannot gain peace of mind by expanding our external activities. Reduce mate- rial engagements and spend more time in prayer, introspection and meditation. This will reduce those thoughts in our mind that make us feel restless. Always re- member, an uncluttered mind will enjoy greater stability and produce greater peace of mind. Meditate Regularly: Meditation calms the mind and gets rid of disturbing thoughts. This is the highest state of peace of mind. Try and experience it yourself. If we meditate earnestly for half an hour every day, our mind will tend to become peaceful during the remaining twenty-three and a half hours of the day. Our mind will not be easily disturbed as it was before. We could benefit by gradually increasing the duration of daily medita- tion. We may think that this will interfere with our daily work. On the contrary, this will increase our efficiency and we will be able to produce better results in less time. Never Leave the Mind Vacant: An empty mind is the devil's workshop. All evil designs are conceived and planned in the vacant mind. Keep your mind occupied with something positive, something interesting and worthwhile. Cultivate and actively pursue a hobby. Do something that holds your interest. Your hobby, like social work or religious work, may not al- ways earn you more money, but you will get a sense of fulfilment and achieve- ment. And more than anything else, you are keeping your mind occupied, denying entry to negative thoughts and actions. KENDRIYA VIDYALAYA NO. 1 SHAHIBAUG, AHMEDABAD 127

Never Procrastinate: Do not waste time in protracted wondering \" Should I or shouldn't I?\" Days, weeks, months, and years may be wasted in that futile mental debate. You can never plan enough because you can never anticipate all results accurately. Analysis should not lead to paralysis. Value your time as your money and do the things that need to be done at the appropriate time. Everything that you do should be here and now. It does not matter if you fail the first time. You can learn from your mistakes and succeed the next time. Sitting back and worrying will lead to nothing and take you nowhere. And as time flies away and targets come closer, your peace of mind will be ruined. Besides, opportunities will not last for long. So grab each opportunity as it comes along using your time optimally and judiciously. Never Regret or Create Anxiety: Never regret about your failings in the past or become anxious of what you wish to do in the future. Many a time, we ruin the present by regretting about the past and wor- rying about the future. We cannot mend the past and the future is not exclusively in our hands. While we ought to learn from our failings and perform better in the future, this should not lead to any anxiety. When we become tense, we lose our mental bal- ance, we tend to become confused. Try adopting these principles and you will surely succeed. KIRITSINH CHAUHAN PGT ENGLISH ANSWERS 6.Soap 7.Clouds Brain test Answers: 1.Letterbox 2. Map 3.Age, height 4.Candle 5.Coin WHO AM I?
