MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN “The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next.” -Abraham Lincoln In this constantly ever changing society young minds struggle with drastic changes in their environ- ment. In these formative years they need a genial, tranquil and natural learning environment, and KV No 1 Shahibaug works to create opportunities for learning and expression for the students. With the ever increasing demand of competitions, fast changing values, pressure of challenging career and in- creasing love for materialistic life it has become difficult for the individuals to maintain its prim val- ues intact. To channelize the creative, intellectual and artistic facet of the children, the school has come up with this school maga- zine. This magazine not only gives a platform to the students to communicate but also highlights the success and achievement of the institution in the last academic year. 5 MESSAGE FROM NOMINEE CHAIRMAN “Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.” — Greg Anderson Today, the role of a school is not only to pursue the academic excellence but also to mo- tivate and empower the students to be lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and productive members of an ever-changing global society. Converting every individual into a self- reliant and independent citizen, KV No1 Shahibaug provides an amalgam of scholastic and co-scholastic activities. The world today is changing at such an accelerated rate and we as educators need to pause and reflect on this entire system of Education.\"To Motivate the Late bloomers, to mold the Mediocre and to Challenge the Gifted” is the teaching notion. Providing good quality modern education including a strong component of cultural values, environment awareness and physical education to talented children, irrespective of their family’s socio -economic condition, is the prime motto of KV No1 Shahibaug. A committed and suppor- tive management, dedicated teachers, caring and co-operative parents blend harmoni- ously to create this school as a child-centric school. There is something for everyone here. The variety and creativity of the articles in the magazine pages represent the talents of the students. I congratulate the entire team for their hard work and dedication for mak- ing this magazine. The reflection of the students’ and teachers creativity is the epitome of the magazine. I am sure that the positive attitude, hard work, sustained efforts and innovative ideas exhibited by the young children will surely stir the mind of the readers and take them to the fantastic world of unalloyed joy and pleasure. “Success comes to those who work hard and stays with those who don’t take rest on the laurels of the past” With warm wishes. Smt. Ansuya Jha City Deputy Collector (East) & Sub Divisional Magistrate Ahmedabad

FROM PRINCIPAL’S DESK “The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” Said Plutarch. It gives me immense pleasure to note that response to this Vidyalaya Patrika has been overwhelming. Our Vidyalaya Patrika kindles the imagination of our learners. As long as our ideas are expressed and thoughts kindled we can be sure of learning, as everything begins with an idea. I appreciate every stu- dent who shared the joy of participation in co-curricular and extracurricular activities along with their commitment to curriculum. That little extra we do, is the icing on the cake. In these times of crisis, let us all “‘Do more than belong – participate. Do more than care – help. Do more than believe – practise. Do more than be fair – be kind. Do more than forgive – forget. Do more than dream – work.” The wide spectrum of articles in different sections gives me a sense of pride that our students and teach- ers possess creative potential and original thinking in ample measures. Each article is entertaining, inter- esting and absorbing. I applaud the contributors for their stimulated thoughts and varied hues in articles contributed by them. Commendable job has also been done by the Editorial Board in planning for and producing the Vidyalaya Patrika. My congratulations to the team who took the responsibility for the ardu- ous task most effectively. I am hopeful that this small piece shall not only develop the taste for reading among students but also develop a sense belonging to the Vidyalaya as well. Just as our mother earth gives us more and more, this Vidyalaya Patrika will enable our learners to give and get a little more of learning. Happy Reading! Smt. Vinita Sharma Principal

Co-ordinator’s Message: “Happiness consists in activity. Its running steam, not a stagnant pool.” John Mason Good We stand poised on the threshold of a new era, an era of change in the dynamics of situations and education. During the pandemic Covid-19, KV Shahibaug has adjusted to face the sweeping winds of change with positive mindset. I believe policies of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghthan to impart holistic education has equipped its students to emerge out and continue to grow in the adverse situation. We all continue to grow in knowledge, courage, creativity, confi- dence and achievements with sense of fulfillment. Being a coordinator, it gives ample opportunities to create and develop a learning community across the school. The activities play an important role, providing aspiration and motivation to students to enhance their skills along with academics. Our aim is to build citizens with positive and strong character which is possible by providing various platforms to young minds and to educate them with new outlook. Vidyalaya Patrika is a strong medium to give wings to the thoughts and imagination of a child. In all perspective our students and members of editorial board deserve appreciation for their constant sup- port, co-operation and sincere efforts. I thank our patrons for their blessings and guidance and pray Almighty that our students scale greater heights and keep KV Shahibaug flag high. May God bless us all! Vandana Badola PGT (Phy.)

GOOD MANNERS A person is known by his/her character and his/her company. A person with good manners would be respectful, kind and lovely. Because, the character is a thing that you can`t hide for a long time. It is the part and parcel of hu- man nature. The good manners are good habits that make a good, respon- sible and realist person. Good manners are like the precious possession of a person. They are the important part for the good social behaviour. They make a person lovely, respectable and known to all. The children with good habits are liked by all. However, as stated earlier, one can`t adopt good manners quickly. Good manners need to be inculcated into the children since childhood. Hab- its are the repeated social behaviours. The good habits take long to de- velop. Therefore, it is essential for parents to teach their children the good manners since childhood for a happy and respectful life. The good manners are very important in the life of a student. As the person is known by his/her habits and manners therefore, the good manners of a student reflect how well he/she is socialized. A student with good manners is respectful, kind and caring for others. TITHI S. PRAJAPATI VIII-B

HOW TO PROTECT THE ECOSYSTEM? An ecosystem is the interaction of plants, animals and small organisms in certain environment. All three feed and procreate to keep the ecosystem alive. There are thousands of ecosystems of varying sizes on earth. Due to global warming and pollution, many ecosystems are suffering. With changes to our everyday lifestyle, we can help to protect our planet and its ecosystems. 1.Reduce or eliminate the use of household chemicals and pesticides that can hurt the environment. Harsh chemicals in typical stores bought clean- ers can get into the water supply and leak into ecosystems when disposed of. We can make our own cleaning solutions using distilled vinegar and baking soda. 2. Recycle as much as we can and reduce the amount of waste we pro- duce. We can create separate bins in our house and label them for glass, plastic, paper and aluminum. Take our bins to our nearest recycling cen- ters. 3.Rather than using disposal paper tissues, use reusable towels that can be washed rather than thrown away. TITHI S. 36 Lockdown diaries.. The vanishing act Lockdown is intensifying, Miss Corona is spreading her wide arms and so is the need for ex- tra precautions...Everything including home essentials, groceries, milk, medicines and vege- tables are all being sanitized...onions are washed and eggs too...potatoes are overwhelmed with the extra pampering of being scrubbed clean and dried. Dehydrated veggies are then cooked and consumed with the satisfaction that the unwanted Chinese guest has been thrown out.. After requesting and pestering the open Amul shop, I had managed to procure one box of Dharwad creamy milk pedas. A delicacy in the days of locked mithai shops. Came the highly sought after fresh pedas (as fresh as they could be) and I promptly kept them in their place..the freezer where I was sure that sub zero temperature would deactivate all microbes. All is well till overzealous (read over cautious) husband goes that extra mile. After chiding me for careless and casual approach Mr. Husband decides that pedas too will be left outside for at least a few hours. Amused I’m helpless and leave the pedas to bake outside at 35 de- grees, wondering what would affect us sooner..the fleeting Corona or obvious food poison- ing! It’s dusk now, all are busy inside when Granny in the Verandah feels something slide away. The 9 year old explorer is called to demystify and discovers the missing treasure...lo it is the precious pedas, vanished into thin air.. The pedas procured after many days awaiting to satisfy my sweet tooth are no longer there. All run helter skelter and finally find the culprit, Satisfied Mr. Tomcat, sitting in a corner, smacking his lips after devouring the delicacy, titbits of pedas still on his whiskers, he ap- pears to be thankful for the generous treat. Moral of the story-The cat will play while Madam Corona stays. (based on true incident) Mrs. Aditi Agarwal TGT Biology Lockdown diaries.. The Broken Cord A fortnight into the lockdown, my phone charging cord stopped working. Luckily I found a spare one. Well you see the phone is no longer just a phone.. It’s a lifeline. it has everything right from the contacts, banking, social media accounts, newspaper, music and so on… In the lockdown the phone has achieved a higher pedestal... No longer an accessory it’s a win- dow to the world.. The friends and family I need to catch up with, the video making apps, plat- form for online classes of the 3 students in the house;( I too am one of them) In short not having a working phone is like being stuck in a desert without a soul in sight.. So thanks to my dear phone, life and work was going on. However on the fateful night of 26th April it all stopped... actually stopped. At 12.15 at night, I realized that my charger had gone into slumber and however much I twisted and turned, plugged and unplugged it ,it refused to show the miracle charging sign.

Now the next day, 27th April was a crucial day of utmost importance in the work from home scene .A major exam had to be conducted for which a working phone was of paramount impor- tance. I was really getting worried now.. Began the witch hunt ....every drawer rummaged, every table top intensely searched and every nook and corner foraged. But to no avail.. as no other charger existed.. I decided that I would call the shopkeeper tomorrow and convince him to deliver a new charging cord somehow. Or even better I would myself go and bring it from the store .My lofty ideas came crumbling down when my husband flatly refused citing security reasons that prohibited anyone from moving out of the walled fortress. I was on the verge of tears and thinking of alternatives.. Battery was just 4% now as I quickly jotted down emergency work contacts. As usual, my teenage prodigy came to the rescue, quite at ease with gadgets I was sure she could fix the issue. When she too resigned and could not revive my dying charger, I realized that I was in a major soup .While at it, she spotted that my neighbour was online and suggested to ask her. To my sur- prise she answered my query immediately at 12.45. (turned out burning the midnight oil) Sadly, she didn’t have the one I needed. I was mired in worry wondering how I would conduct the exam tomorrow, how I would collect the answer sheets, coordinate everything etc. all the while I was negotiating to hijack my better half`s phone to deal with the impending exam which by now had been adequately testing me, myself. I was awakened from a fretful reverie by a message alert. The message read....”Just now looked in our store for the charger you need...we had one two years ago...Come to the gate and take it” Those were the best words I had heard since hours....I couldn’t believe my luck .Imagine finding the charger of my neighbour’s broken phone which existed 2 years ago.. that too at 1 am at night. I breathed a sigh of relief.. and couldn’t thank her enough. I realised that though Lockdown has many flip sides ...the news is full of them...but it also has many examples of human beings rising to the occasion, examples of the innate goodness of the hu- man spirit. Mine was just a broken cord but the lockdown has helped mending many broken hearts, many families who did not have time for each other have come together and are volunteering to help one another. Lockdown has brought to fore myriad examples of such selfless acts of humanity. People are lend- ing a helping hand by sharing their resources with others less privileged. Shops, malls and theatres are closed, Schools, colleges and organisations are closed. Yet the heart is open Open to sharing, loving and caring. For me , Optimism has been the driver, be it in past, present or the future. The challenges of Covid 19 also could not budge my faith in the power of optimism. Optimism wins, Goodness prevails! 39 Maths is cool too! Some fun facts on mathematics Even though numbers can be scary sometimes, but if learned properly and with fun, they can be pretty amazing and cool. To make our point, let's see few interesting facts about mathematics Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.\"- Albert Einstein No matter how nice and simple this quote makes us think mathematics is, we are sure that for many of you, mathematics as a subject seems no less than a nightmare. The calculation which includes alphabets, let alone numbers, was no less than a herculean task to complete. However, the fact remains that Mathematics is an essential subject for students. Even though numbers can be scary sometimes, but if learned properly and with fun, they can be pretty amazing and cool. To make our point, let's check out a few interesting facts about mathematics: 1. Google is all about mathematics The lifeline of today's time, Google, derived its name from the word 'googol' -- a mathematical term for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros, which reflect infinite amount of search on the internet. 2. Crazy multiplications A very interesting things about math is how crazy it gets with its function. For instance, if you multiply 111,111,111 by 111,111,111, this becomes equal to 12,345,678,987,654,321. 3. The terminology dilemma This debate is going on for a long time now. But the answer depends on which part of the world you are in. Americans called mathematics 'math', saying that the function of the same is a singular noun and with that logic, they prefer saying 'math', which is singular too. On the other hand, speakers of British English would always say 'maths', as in 'I have a degree in maths'. However, there are logical arguments for both the spellings. The Oxford and the Merriam-Webster diction- aries say the word is plural because of the letter 's' in the end. On the contrary however, it is usually used as a singular noun. For example, 'Mathematics is my favourite subject' and not 'Mathematics are my favourite subject'. Kanak Gupta VIII B Plastic Hazards Plastic is widely used in our day to day life. Starting from a pen to a polythene bag in which we carry fruits and books are forms of plastic. Though convenient in our day to day use, it has posed an alarming threat to the environment. Non biodegradable: Plastic is non-biodegradable and do not decay by biological actions of microbes. They remain in the same state as we throw them. So, dumps of garbage are created making our cities and soil polluted.

Harmful Chemicals: To destroy plastics, we can either recycle or burn them. If we burn plastic, they emit harmful chemical gases like carbon dioxide (CO,), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrous oxide (NO), methane (CH4), sulphur di- oxides (SO2), etc. These gases pollute our environment, though in negligible content, they add to green house effect and endanger our environment. Damage Sanitary System: The plastic wastes block pipes and sanitary lines; as a result, dirty water comes out on roads. This causes fear of malaria, cholera and other diseases. Ocean Pollution: The wastes of plastic bags, bottles, etc. are drawn into a sea or an ocean by rivers and they are deposited in them. They pollute and disturb the eco-system of the sea or the ocean. Ecosystem Imbalance: Due to wide scale use of plastic, water, soil and air pollutions are caused. These polluted components of environment lead to imbalance of various ecosystem of the Earth. Only solution to this plastic hazard is to take preventive measures and for that, we have to a. To reduce use of plastic wherever possible b. To use recyclable bags and things c. To recycle the used plastic d. Not to throw used plastic here and there e. To collect the used plastic by the Government and then to recycle them f. Only recyclable plastics should be allowed to use Kanak Gupta VIII B WHAT MAKES A GOOD STUDENT A good student is willing to put his/her efforts to work hard and achieve his/her goal, no matter what else is around him/her . A good student has passion in what he/she learns about. A good student is one who should be motivated. Some students are scared to speak up and ask for help when they need it the most , a good student is a good communicator. A responsible student knows it's his / her job to get to class in time, turns assignment he/she owes in time . Responsibility plays a big role in becoming a good student . “A GOOD STUDENT IS NOT WHO STUDIES WELL BUT ONE WHO HAS DESIRE TO STUDY .” SAMIKSHA RAI XD

Why should we clean our hands with soap at least for 20 seconds. Toilet soap is generally potassium salt of a higher fatty acid and may be represented as RCOO–K+. When soap is dissolved in water, it dissociates into RCOO– and K+ ions. The RCOO– ions, however, consist of two parts; a long hydrocarbon chain R (hydrophobic part) which is attached with crown type fibers (formed by protein) on corona virus and a polar group COO– (hydrophilic part) attaches with water. By this way corona virus attaches with water through soap on the surface of hands. This structure so formed is known as MICELLES in the language of science. In forming this micelles at least 15 - 20 seconds are required. When we wash our hands with water, then this micelle washes away with water and thus any corona virus if present on hands wash away with water. Moreover, during washing, the corona virus is trapped within micelles and dies or becomes inactive. The better results may be achieved if the concentration of soap on hands is sufficient (plenty of lathers) and water is slightly warm (about 30°C to 35°C) Moreover, we should opt the following steps during washing of our hands: Open the tap moderately. Wet your hands properly. Apply soap or soap solution properly on your hands. Rub all parts of your hands properly with soap at least 15 to 20 seconds. Wash away all the soap of your hand through plenty of water. Wash the drops of soap if any left on wash basin and tap with water. Close the tap. Wipe your hands with cotton cloth and apply some cream to it. Be healthy, keep physical distance with others, Wear the mask, wash your hands properly with soap frequently. 42 SETTING OUR GOALS RIGHT A man was travelling and stopped at a junction. He met another man and asked him, \"Where does this road take me?\" The other person asked, \"Where do you want to go?\" The man replied, \"I don't know.\" The other person said, “Then take any road. What difference does it make?\" How true. When we don't know where we are going, taking any road will not make any difference. So, first we have to decide our destination and then choose the right path to take to reach the destination. Even the most powerful magnifying glass will not light paper if you keep moving the glass. But if you focus and hold it to focus the bright sunlight to converge on a particular spot, the paper will light up. That is the power of concentration. So, it is not only important to set our goals and plan a road map but equally important not to lose focus. If we lose focus, we will get distracted and will not be able to able to achieve our goal. Just imagine, you have all the eleven football players, enthusiastically ready to play the game, all charged up, and then someone took the goal posts away. What would happen to the game? There is nothing left. Goals provide us a sense of direction. Would you sit in a train or a plane without knowing where it was going? The obvious answer is no. Then why do people go through life without having any goals? Finally, we should set our goal right. There is a difference between setting the right goal and setting the goal right. We can come to know whether the goal chosen by us is the right goal only after achieving it. We may not be able to predict the outcome in advance. By that time, all other options are closed and we have to be content with what we got. May be, we could have got something better. On the contrary, if we set our goals right, we will be able to steer ourselves in the right direction to achieve what we want. 44 Arjun or Eklavya If you are asked whether it is better to be Arjun with a teacher like Dronacharya or to be Eklavya without a teacher, it is very likely that you will choose to be Arjun. Possibly this is a right choice but for a moment consider looking at it from another point of view. Imagine a situation where Arjun is taking aim at the target, shoots, misses the target of bull's eye by 2-inch on the left side. Arjun goes to his teacher Drona who looks at the situation, asks Arjun to hit it again, the same thing happens again. Drona tells Arjun that he is putting more weight on left foot and asks him to shift a little bit of weight on to his right foot. Arjun does that, shoots, now misses again the bull's eye and hits on the right side by 1-inch, again takes aim after rebalancing his weight, shoots, and hits the target! Now consider the same situation for Eklavya. He misses the target by 2-inch on the left side. He has no- body to turn to, no Guru to ask and get \"ready-made\" solutions. He is worried, he thinks, he shoots again and keeps trying. At night he cannot sleep, and tosses and turns on his hard bed. Next day some more prac- tice but similar results. Next night again no sleep. Possibly on the third day (likes flash of lightning ) he discovers the role played by the way he balances the weight on each foot. He tries now to lean on his right foot and sooner or later shoots and hits the target! The question arises: which situation is preferable ? While Arjun was getting ready-made answers he could not develop his own ability of struggling and solving the problems which came to him. So every time the problems come, he needs to look up to someone to guide him. He does this at the battle- field also (which in a way, in retrospect, is good because mankind got a fantastic thing called the Gita because of this. (Of course Lord Krishna would have found out some other ways of giving us the Gita considering this thing had not happened, is a counter argument.) On the other hand, Eklavya had taught himself archery, had a feeling of achievement far, far, fuller and deeper than that of Arjun's and had also learnt the ability of squarely facing the problems which came to him in life by analyzing them, struggling through them and finally winning! So dear friends, we ask again, is it better to be Arjun with a teacher like Dronacharya or Eklavya who has to find his own answers without a teacher? 46 RESPECT FOR THE TEACHERS… Teachers play an important role in the lives of students. Apart from our parents they also shape our lives by imparting knowledge to us and help to inculcate good morals in us. Teachers can really impact on the lives of many children, especially when they leave a good impression on them. Many students are able to keep in memory of teachers who in one way or the other affected their lives positively or negatively. Indeed, teachers often make the difference between a successful student and an unsuccessful one; between one who loves to read and write, and one who does not. However, in spite of the meaningful role that teachers play in the lives of students, some shows tantrums, insult or even attack teachers when they are punished for wrong doing. Students give teachers all sorts of names, and refuse to give them respect that they deserve. Sometimes we get punished for the mistakes we make, such as going contrary to school rules. 48 TWO VOICES, ONE SONG ROAR It’ s so rare to I read quietly Find a friend like you Under those glasses of virtuality Somehow when you’re I see this world quite differently.. Around, the sky is As my illusion says.. Always blue Stay quietly. The way we talk I dance a little of beat The things you say Maybe I like to hear the heart beat The way you make it all ok In this veil of salsa and tap dance And how you know, I dance on sidewalk All of my jokes With me drunk.. listening to that beat But you laugh anyway But my illusion says If I could wish for one Stay quietly... Thing, I’d take the smile I sing a bit slowly That you bring Singing on the authentic vibrations Wherever you go in this of my small ukulele World, I’ll come along And listening to the music of my own Together we dream the I pitched a little high in the hope of enjoying it .... Same dream But my illusion says.. Forever I’m here for you, Ssshhhhhh..... You’re here for me Stay quietly Oh, oh, oh , I cry quietly so no one could hear me Two voices, one song My sobbing makes a laugh and asks me Now everyday is Is something wrong.?? Something new And the tears ran out for help to my illusion And any path we take, And my illusion mocked them and says I’m looking forward to stay quietly. The way we try and never So I wrote my silence in that diary Quit, the way that all the And painted with colourful emotions Pieces fit I was supposed to keep hidden with.. The way we know the And let others read it.. Parts by heart, and And my illusion said \" what are you doing??\" Sing out loud \" I said \" If I could wish for one STAY QUIETLY Thing, I’d take the smile But this time the readers held me That you bring And helped me out to runaway Wherever you go in this But I couldn't stop the illusion to follow me World, I’ll come along No one else could see it Together we dream the But it had kept me holding inside so badly Same dream That I couldn't set me free.. Forever I’m here for you, So I ask my illusion You here for me \"Why?\" Oh, oh, oh , The illusion said nothing except Two voices one song Stay quietly Oh, oh, oh , I again asked Two voices, one song \"Why???\" Oh, oh, oh , The illusion broke off ... Two voices one song The illusion set me free... The Illusion smiled... And said. VARTIKA T. SUMARA Was waiting for the right time. VIII B Now.. Vanisha Bhavsar ROAR... XII D -
