JUNTOS PODEMOS - TOGETHER WE CAN! Charity: “The Love that Transforms” If there was ever a year when San Lucas needed your support, it was 2020. And you came through. As the pandemic spread, many families in San Lucas lost their income due to work and travel restrictions. And where government assistance didn’t cover many people in need, Mission leadership stepped in to support families with food and other household items. Charity Program Director Emi Tun and her team worked with community leaders to deter- mine the most vulnerable families in each community. In total, Emi and her team delivered 4,578 bags of food. These much-needed essentials reached roughly half of the entire population of San Lucas and the surrounding communities. Emi says: “In the midst of this time of isolation and uncertainty, this was beautiful. Each bag of food carried hope for the family that received it. Many people are still without work, and we continue to receive calls about when we will be back to their community with more corn, soap, and beans. This attending to the pain and suffering of others is the definition of charity. It is love that transforms and leaves the people served with an experience of God’s mercy.” Thank you for your tireless commitment to the people of San Lucas during an unprecedented year. Your support mattered more than you could ever know. 2020 Fiscal Year Revenue: $3,541,799.32 Expenses: $2,627,977.11 8% Despite all the challenges, 2020 was the most successful fundraising year yet. Single gifts ranged from $1 (yes, a single dollar sent through the 92% mail) to over $500,000! And, as a result, in addition to fully funding all the programs in San Lucas, we have been able to designate $480,000 in additional funding of projects and programs over and above the annual budget. This will result in even more lives changed and businesses supported. 92% of every dollar donated supports programming, impacting the lives of over 25,000 people every year. A Message from the Executive Director Dear Friend of San Lucas, The parable of the Good Samaritan tells the story of a man attacked by robbers and left by the side of the road to die. The man is passed by until a Samaritan, not the obvious choice to help the man, stops. “[The Samaritan] went to him and bandaged his wounds… then put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.” The parable is told to answer the question, “Who is my neighbor?” And, I believe, the answer is, “Your neighbor is the one you care for.” But there is another truth here, and that is this: in order for them to become neighbors, your lives must become intertwined. The Samaritan physically cared for the victim, even spending the night, tending to his wounds. His hands got dirty, he smelled the smells and felt the wounds, he got involved with the man, and in doing so, their lives became intertwined and they became neighbors. 2020 was a remarkable year and your support of the Mission and the people of San Lucas did not waver; in fact, it grew. Why? Because we have been together in both sorrow and joy. We have served and been served. We have bandaged their wounds even as they have bandaged ours. In fact, our lives have become intertwined. And we have become neighbors. Thank you for your continued commitment to your neighbors.
