Folks, I would be remiss if I did not include the names Harold Knight, DavidHale and Brent Dutton as men who have been great friends and gave megood advice in my early days, both in business and on the calls. In 1986 Iwent to Easton, MD, and got cut in the first round. Devastated, I returnedhome and called Harold Knight, who had won the WORLD in 1979. “I needto learn how to make my call buzz if I am going to be competitive.” Knightand Hale had just come out with their double-cluck goose call. I drove toCadiz, KY, to learn this new sound, and I applied it to my flute call. In 1987Brent Dutton, a good, experienced caller from Southern Illinois, shared withme how to put a growl into an OLT call.Now I could do the greeting, clucks, double-clucks, come backs, moans and alaydown routine with both clear notes and the guttural sound. I went back toEaston in 1988 and won on that flute call. Several friends helped with thedevelopment of the Guides Best. Yes, I have had a lot of help and gladly say,“thank you.” 67

Business aside, every day I go in thepit I am as excited as the first time, differencebeing now I love to watch the birds more thanI like to actually shoot ‘em; still love to call ‘emin, still love to ‘fool em.’ Does a real hunterever get over that rush of looking up at the skyand waiting for the birds to shadow over?What is it that brings all of us back to thefields year after year? That moan or the honk?Whatever it is, the sound is sweet and thecupped wings are a beautiful sight.
